Figured since I'm actually putting effort into this cosplay, I'm starting a thread.

Concept Sketch:

Some progress on Femme Smoker~

I went to the Galleria, and after searching and searching, I was pointed out to a store called Papaya, and I asked if they had one of those bolero jackets in white…. They did, and it was on sale! $10!

Only thing about it is, the sleeves are short, but everything else is just like I wanted it! I also got some cheap vests that were the same material, I was thinking of cutting off pieces of those to extend the arms on the jacket…

And then finally, my favorite part of the costume, that actually gave me the idea to cosplay Smoker… My awesome boots!

NOW. I have quite a bit of work to do on that jacket. I gotta find the green fur trim and the blue trim, and of course the cigars and something for the red kanji for "Justice" on the back… Lots of little things that need work. Also, I'm still searching for some dark brown gloves, I hear working gloves would work well... and of course, the PVC pipes for the jutte.

My goal is to at least have this done in time for Oni Con, or if I time it right, maybe for Anime Fest....

Keep us posted as it progresses. Oh, and you might want to include a link to your Smoker costume concept drawings in your artstuff thread, so that people can see your vision for the costume and understand why you are using a bolero type jacket, etc.

Oh, Smoker's jacket is long? Ah. Well, I didn't say your jacket should be long. I said I didn't know the actual size in the manga, and thought yours was the correct size.

I don't think bolero jackets look feminine. I know a lot of women wear them, but I just don't see it being feminine.

It reminds me of Mrs. Robinsons' leg pose on the movie poster.

I'm as old-fashioned as they come. TO me, feminine clothes are dresses and mini-skirts. TO me, a bolero jacket is just a jacket.

Thought: Sew on the arm extensions at the point where the bands of cigars go, so you can cover the seams with the cigars.

Maybe you can produce an iron-on Justice kanji.

I'm not sure how I would do an iron-on kanji, like what material to use and all....

OK. So I've started getting more serious about this, er rather, I've been finding more time to work on my Smoker cosplay.

While I was out today, my sis and I went to Plato's Closet, a resale store. This cute cordaroy jacket caught my eye… It has the perfect look that I am going for as far as how I want to put the fur trim on my jacket.
So basically, I took pics to reference off of when I start sewing...

If it was a white jacket, I'd have bought it right then and there. I'm sure I could bleach it, but that can backfire on me, so I'm good with what I have. Also, it was a size too small for me XD

I think one day when I have money to spend on clothes, I'll chance setting foot in an Abercrombie & Fitch store to see if I could find this jacket in my size… I thought it was too cute~

Oh, and I found the perfect navy pants there! They are dickies, and I only paid $12 for em. The color is almost spot on! Pics of that later ^^

I found the PERFECT pants! they only cost me $12 at Plato's Closet! <3

yes my mirror is dirty, no i don't care. I'm out of windex…..

Also, the belt, which I bought at Wal Mart...

Oh, and here is a pic of the fur that I am using for the jacket…

Aaand… randomly, since I was trying to work on fixing it, here is my haramaki from my Zoro cosplay

I made it out of an ugly green tanktop…. I am so glad I found it, it was just dead on perfect, just what I had wanted for my haramaki

Great costume workings so far. I recommend that you have fake cigars attached to your jacket sleeve so that 1) you don't have to worry about tobacco smell, 2) if for some reason they aren't secured properly, you don't have to worry about them breaking apart if they fall, and 3) you don't have to worry about buying too many that are the right size/shape.

(I'm assuming you'll probably buy at least two for the ones in your mouth.)

Also, are you going to make Smoker's weapon?

Yeah, I should get fake cigars, I don't really know where to look for some though ^^; I don't want to have to make all of em, but if that is what I must do, then oh wells XD You do bring up a good point about the smell and the hassle of losing them…

Yeah, I saw how betoman made his, it doesn't look too hard. I just need some PVC pipes and some red cloth for the hilt. And of course some chrome paint. I haven't had a chance to go to Home Depot, where I can probably find all of that minus the fabric, which I can get at a fabric store or Wal Mart or something XD

Also, I don't really know how much PVC pipes cost, I need about 3-4 feet in length.... I need to go do some interweb research now.

Ok, so after doing some researching i found out that PVC pipes are not expensive and I should be able to buy what I need.

I am debating on if I should buy these fake cigars:

They're cheap, but I don't know if I like how they're already 'lit'… Its fine for the two that will go in my mouth, but not for the ones on the jacket, since they don't look like that.... i dunno, it bothers me. I wonder if there is a way to modify them...

And I found some brown work gloves that would work out perfectly, so unless I find some at Home Depot, I'm buying these:

A warning on chrome paint… it's the most delicate of spray paints I've seen... it takes ages to dry (I'm unconvinced it actually does) and it shows every imperfection. You might look at a metal-flake paint instead (aluminium or silver colour)

For fake cigars, just cut strips of brown construction paper and roll those up. Probably pack it with crumpled up newspaper or something of a cigar/tube shape.

Well, I didn't want to go that route, but now that I think about it more, it may be a better idea. Yeah, I can get em to look how I want that way, thanks for the suggestion!

I may get one set of two or something and maybe try to match it up with the ones that are going on the jacket, which I will make myself.

And I worry about that too, I'm short and chubby, so I don't look like any anime characters that I cosplay…. I do hope I lose weight before Oni Con, I'm supposed to be a femme Smoker, so ideally, that means being all sexy and cute as well XD I'm gonna be wearing a balero jacket, so getting rid of the pudge is a must! e_e;

For some reason it seems more fun to cosplay guys! Like, I want to do Zoro again, in the Galley La shirt. It would be awesome.
