There are a few things that could be wrong. For instance, you might need to clean your lens; to do this, you need to open your PS2 by removing the screws on the bottom. Beware, this will void your warranty. For more detailed information, refer to this F.A.Q.: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/ps2/file/915821/19658
You may also need to adjust the voltage of your lens. For help, refer to the aforementioned guide.
If you don't want to void your warranty, there are a few more methods: use a cleaning disc, set your PS2 to Diagnosis Mode, or use the tape method. For information on all of these, the above guide will help.

Early PlayStation games don't work on the PlayStation 2; about thirty, I think. However, FF VIII isn't one of them, so it should work; and if the discs are in good condition, it's probably your PS2.

A PS2 goes for about $130 dollars at any store (I got mine at Wal-Mart), but you can only buy the newer, slimmer version.
-
or you could buy a psx for $30
-
UOPDATE: I wient to blockbuster got disc 1 clreaned ..asked them to test it on thier PS2 and the Game worked.. tried it on my system and the black disk appears instead of silver. NOW i hear a click, click, click and stop. no Screen appears like the one at blockbusters PS2(PS logo, squaersoft credits)
Is the clicking bad?

They could be a bit difficult to find; Sony stopped producing them last year.
-
"used" man. you can find them used real cheap. heck, I gotta go buy another one that I can use my external mod on. (stupid people i lent my preasous PSX to busted it, never lending anything out again) T_T
-
WAIT stop right there, all of you.
This is EXACTLY why I tossed my PS2 into the "last gen box" and HAD to get a PS3 to finish god of war 2.
I also had an early PS2. The bulky kind, not the cheap slim kind. Brand new, right when it first came out. Not immediately but pretty quickly.
Awhile back I kept getting Disc Read Error and all my friends thought it was because the CD was scratched. Leans cleaning and such later, I end up frustrated because halfway through God of War 2(this started a couple months ago) the eye cleaning and CD cleaning(the cd never left the drive anyways) it STILL had the issue. So I gave up.
Now you need to go buy a PS3. Seriously. You're only wasting money on the PS2, because in a year or so, nobody will want to buy or sell them, except badly damaged ones on eBay from people desperate to get a next gen console.
In other words, this is the rough equivalent of the original Playstation just suddenly ceasing to function overnight, another problem I had at one point.
-
hey mr pesimistic. I just bought a game cube for christmas. hell there are people out there who still play nintendo. don't boo the old systems cause something new and shiney is sitting on the shelf in the store.
You can bitch about technical problems, but you can't bitch cause it's an older model. or ….I'll have to beat you over the head with....my pocky sitting on my desk here.

considering the PS3 is 600 dollars.. seems too expensive for a system.
does anyone know how much credit I would get for a bulky Ps2 at eb?
-
Last time I checked trade in value was $50 but I haven't been to eb or gamestop in ages.
-
well..looks like I cant replace my system so I cant sell the game and Somehow I cant throw the game away so I guess i have no idea what I am going to do now….
