(note: "The Plague Dogs" is only an anime in the literal sense. It's a British animation, not Japanese. Nevertheless, after reading about and watching this film I thought it was deserving of having its own thread in the Arlong Park Other Anime/Manga section. Fans of "Ginga Nagareboshi Gin" might like it too.)

I watched this movie recently on YouTube and I have to say I found it very powerful. Knowing some of the people who visit this site I think they'll feel the same way about "The Plague Dogs".

It's based on a book from the author of "Watership Down" (Richard Adams) and its film adaptation was done by the same team and director who did the "Watership Down" movie (Martin Rosen). From watching this film it's hard to tell who exactly it's intended audience is, which might explain why it didn't do so well in the box-office. But I stil recomend it to anyone who wants to see a great and emotionally-moving story.

The plot revolves around two dogs who escape from an animal-testing facility and its cruel experiments. While they're now free, things are still hard since they find no humans to take them in and must fend for themselves in the wild. Things get more complicated when sheep they've been hunting down and eating are found by humans and news of two escaped experimental dogs who may be infected with the bubonic plague starts to spread. Whether you're looking for something that speaks strongly of animal rights or just a great tragic adventure tale, you should check out "The Plague Dogs" if you haven't already seen it. I've actually heard it's one of those rare instances where the movie is actually better than the book that inspired it, but I won't explain why at this point, it's just comparisons I'vve read on the Internet. But now I want to check out the book.

Also, just as a cartoon, this movie is excellent. The drawings and animation are so eerily realistic and yet so exagerratingly (is that a word?) depressing at the same time.

Since the movie didn't do too well it's hard to find, especially the uncut version. Unless you can get and watch the Region-4 DVD you're probably out of luck. Fortunately you can watch the whole thing uncut on Youtube:

      .

If anyone wants to discuss this anime further, please don't type up or post any spoilers unless they're hidden or you can just provide links to sources of the spoilers so people can just choose to see them or not. In fact, if you find anything else interesting about "The Plague Dogs" or relating to it please feel free to post it.

Wow, this movie is amazing. I've only seen the first segment but i'm already hooked. I can't believe an animation of such shocking realism exsists. It's also genuinely frightening, which seems hard to do in animation.

Not an anime… but a really excellent and completely overlooked movie. In fact, forget it, this movie is head and shoulders better than 99% of anime. Excellent suggestion.

I saw this movie about 15 years ago. I should watch it again, since my memory of it is foggy. But I recall it's rather dark and sad.

Well it is an anime depending on what your definition is. In Japan they'd call "The Plague Dogs" a foreign anime.

But yes, I did put it in the Anime section for a reason. A lot of people characterize and site the unique popularity of Japanese anime as being different and unique among other cartoons around the world because of their striking realism (of course that's not always the case), kind of like how Hollywood live-action movies are famous around the world for their fantasy-like unrealisim (that's also not always the case either). "The Plague Dogs" is a totally Western anime, however it has a lot of those powerfully-realistic elements that characterize Japanese anime, and it does it better than a lot of other Japanese cartoons I've seen. It's amazing how they're able to animate, draw, and narrate "The Plague Dogs" without the use of real actors/settings, CGI, and anamatronics. And what makes it so beautifully haunting is that it's still obviously a cartoon, it was definitely done by cartoonists, yet it was so real, both in its story and presentation.

If it wasn't made for Japan, it's not anime. Please move this to Media mods/admins.

I didn't even pay attention to the fact that it was in the anime section, but Terek is right, but standard definition, we specifically intend the anime/manga section for Japanese animation.

I don't mind if it gets moved, I just follow the literal defnition of anime, but I'll also agree with the other popular definition of anime is animation from Japan. "Anime is a style" is just stupid to me though.

"Anime" is literally just short for "animation". People should just say animation, just like they should say "stupid" instead of "baka".

This seems like a really powerful movie, so I'm seeing if I can torrent it for higher quality image.

One thing I really liked about Watership Down (and it seems just as true for this story) was how the author/animators criticized the human rape of the Earth while maintaining a realistic depiction of nature. It seems like a lot of people who've attempted making a similar criticism haven't bothered with the nuance and just delve into this heavy-handed "humans bad, animals good" storyline. It's hard to take someone's message seriously when they seem to think the wilderness looks like Bambi.

What's nihm? If you're talking about this movie that the topic's about, I posted links in the first post.

Oh wait, are you talking about "The Secret of Nihm"? My bad. I still need to see that movie.
