Looks simply awesome - I´ve generally tried to avoid playing MMO, this might be the exception though.
Personally I´d be looking forward to playing a Dark Elf, hope they get some cool character classes besides those Witch Elves - I´d love to play an Executioner of Har Ganeth.
Overall the Warhammer World seems just like the perfect setting. -
The developers basically looked at everything that sucks about modern MMO's and destroyed them.
For example, you can't move through your opponents, so tanks are actually tanks and stop people from doing shit.
Healers that can fight while still being a full healer? WHAT IS THIS BLASPHEMY?
Nine players, and you, in your area needs to kill 20 Squigs for a quest? Well, each of you kill 2 Squids and all of you are done. Everybody gets a reward.
-
Do you by any chance happen to know the original Warhammer?
-
-
I used to play it some years ago myself, just asking.
-

Never really got a chance to play it. As a child, t'was always too expensive for a weekly allowance.
But now, after money wouldn't be an issue, the nearby comic shop closed, so all the Warhammer players scattered from here'ta'there.
-
Yeah, it´s ridiculously overpriced, I never had a problem finding players though.
The game is quite challenging yet fun and if you have some decent painting skills it looks absolutely spectacular at times.

Never was too good with colors; always been more of a black & white illustrator.

Warhammer Online Beta is now accepted applications. Apply at the main website.
-
oh thats where I knew that company name, DAoC kicked ass, +points for this one in my book.
-
I can only afford(in both money and time) to play 1 MAYBE 2 MMORPGs at a time.
This may be the only other game I'll play besides WoW. There's simply not enough time.

how do they stop asshats from blocking doorways? can you push immobile people out of the way?
whathappens if a guild gathers somewhere just to prevent others from entering… is "friendly fire" availeble so that you can slaughter the bastards just for beeing bastards?
(i only played wow before and i really like the incorporal entity feature because so many people were bastards on my server)

PVP is limited to certain areas of a zone. If you aren't in that small area, which is usually isolated by rivers and bridges, you can't battle the other faction. You can actually see this area from other areas in the zone. For example, if you're on the PVE side of the river, you can look across the other side and see people beating the shit out of each other; you're in no danger of dying, though.
So, there's no way that the enemy can walk into your PVE area and start "blocking off paths" and whatnot.
But if somebody is blocking your path in the PVP area, your only option is to kill them. Collision detection only applies to opposing factions, though. You can always walk through your own faction's characters, so guilds of your faction can't prevent you from moving anywhere.
-
so you can move through each other in PvE areas? players cant block NPCs ie tank big bosses by beeing in their way instead of holding acctuall aggro?

Only players of your faction are even allowed in your PVE areas, so they can't block you from doing anything. Basically, unless the monster or player in question is hostile towards you, they cannot block your path of movement.
However, if your in a team that's fighting a monster, your tank can prevent the monster from going anywhere by blocking its path. This prevents the monster from stunning your tank and simply going to attack your healers, which was a major problem in World of Warcraft. Holding aggro will still definitely be required, but the fact that the monster can't just walk wherever it wants to will be the tanks job a lot easier.
-
sweet. and i guess they could (if they wanted to) allways make ghost bosses incorporal so that they can pass through the tank to create different kind of boss encounters ^^

The game itself is mostly focused on PVP aspects, not PVE raiding and instances. Warhammer is being advertised as a PVP game, so that PVE fans will know what they're getting into.
The best gear in the game is obtained through PVP "quests" when destroying the other faction's capital cities.
-
And even if it were like WoW, it pisses me off when the bosses have special abilities so you have to change your strategy, especially the ones with mini monsters that help in the attack, that either follow the classic game rules or also have special exceptions(just not as special as the boss's) so you'd end up fighting little guys who you can tank, and a big guy who'll pass through the tanks if that was the case.
I've gained a hatred for bosses that bend the rules. If it were a single player to 2-4 player co-op game, sure, a final boss that can teleport might be cool if it's not too overpowered, but come on, don't give every boss an ability that forces you to rethink the way you've played the game from the start.
-
Yeah, and pretty much all WoW bosses are going down the path of: "HEY! REMEMBER EVERYTHING YOU LEARNED ABOUT PLAYING? IT MEANS SHIT NOW. If your melee group attacks me, I'll stun them all, drop aggro, and attack your healers. If only ranged people attack me, I'll pop some kind of Mind Control on the tank while I attack your healers. You know what? I'm just going to attack your healers."
It's fucking annoying.
-
so bosses being logical and doing what a player would do in the same situation is bad?
-

It defeats the point of you learning to play your class.
If you're the tank, yet the boss you're fighting against is immune to Taunt, drops aggro constantly, stuns you, Blinds you, then takes a shit in your mouth while killing the other party members, what's the point of even having a tank?
-
Greenskins look awesome.
-
@Cap'n:
Greenskins look awesome.
Yeah, Gohn's goin' to be a Black Orc.
-
No love for the Chaos?
And theres no way end game will be PvP, raiding towns still involves killing guards, and capturing the enemy king.

Plenty of users have already stated that they're playing Chaos and Dark Elves. Greenskins are going to be the least used of the Destruction armies.
The raiding of capitals cities is the final tier of RVR. Go check out the podcasts and videos on YouTube. However, you can influence the points of your faction by doing PVE quests and whatnot. It's all incorporated into RVR.
-
@Cyringohn:
Yeah, Gohn's goin' to be a Black Orc.
I'm trying to figured out exactly the difference between those and "Choppas."
Oh, and another thing; when you pick a race, can you only interect with your own and the race's designated enemy? Say I'm a Greenskin, does this mean I can only pal around with other orcs and goblins, and can only fight against dwarves?
-

Black Orcs are pure tanks. They utilize shields and large, one-handed weapons. Their specialty is incapacitating their opponents with stunning, and other similar, attacks.
Orc Choppas are pure melee damage. They jump into a battle and grow stronger as the battle rages. Quite essentially, Choppas are frenzying barbarians.
And yes, you can. For the first part of the game few levels of the game, you'll be in your specific zone, interacting with your own race and your race's enemy. Not too long after that, you're more than welcome to venture out and associate with Chaos and Dark Elves, helping them to fight The Empire and High Elves. There probably isn't an exact level limitation of when you can go associate with your ally races; it's probably when you are simply a high enough level that you can leave your first zone safely.
The level cap for this game is 40, by the way.
-
Only 40? Damn, they must be really hyping up the PvP then.
-
@Cap'n:

Yes.
Guild Wars was the same way. You could easily get to Level 20 [the maximum level] in one or two days by paying people to run you through Ascension, then just going back and doing some quests. Very easy.
-
Not sure if I want to do Black or Choppa.
Argh I don't know why I should think about this because it'll only make me want the game more when I probably can't make time for it. Damn.
-
yeah the more I look at this the better it looks
-
@Cap'n:

Well, this is the kind of MMO that you don't need to devote a lot of time to, actually.
As for Black Orc vs. Orc Choppa, it's basically an issue of survivability. Black Orcs probably don't do anywhere near the damage that Orc Choppas do, but they take centuries to kill. Orc Choppas are easier to kill, due to having weaker armor and [probably] health, but they do a lot of damage.
The thing that sells is the game is just the small attentions to details. Want to wear a Dwarf Beard as a belt? Go ahead. Weld animal teeth and bones into your armor permanently? Go right ahead. Find a dying Elf lying on the ground? Take the sword that's stuck in his gut. Free sword for you, no strings attached. [These are called Exploration Quests in the game. They reward you for venturing off the set path by giving you instant rewards.]
-
Yeah, I'm not sure if I want to do the defensive approach or the offensive. If I can get my friend into the game, I'll probably pick the opposite of him.
Hell, I'll probably try both provided extra characters don't tack on another fee.
-
@Cap'n:
Hell, I'll probably try both provided extra characters don't tack on another fee.
It's likely that they won't. FFXI is the only game that does that, really. World of Warcraft let you have 50 characters across 10 servers, and Guild Wars allowed you to have four [and increased that capacity by two for each expansion you purchased]. Guild Wars didn't have a monthly fee, though.
If your friend doesn't join, you're welcome to play with Gohn. Will be playin' as a Black Orc, most likely, and the roommate is going to be a Goblin Shaman, harnessing the power of the "Waaaaagh!!!"
-
No wonder people don't like to play Priests in WoW. On top of having to micromanage 39 other people's health you have to worry about bosses programmed to make your learn a new way to play. And guess what? once you leave the boss encounter, you have to PLAY NORMAL AGAIN!!!
I can't wait. I was gonna be a Dwarf on account of the beard and I can start my first tank(I'm normally the spellcaster) but I'm considering going Human(or Chaos Human) so I can be either a Witch Hunter or the Fire Mage.
-
Every class in Warhammer is designed for battle. Warhammer is famous for having DPS staves and whatnot.
So, if you want to be a healer, you'll have plenty of spells and abilities to help aid you in combat. Warhammer Online doesn't focus much on healing, but more on teamwork, a few buffs here and there, and simply killing the opposing team before you die.
-
Hmm this looks better then I first expected it. I never cared about pvp (due to the fact I stink out loud), but the classes seem really unque. And I love the dwarves.
“Take a rock, say as tall as a dwarf, and roll it down a mountain side. Now imagine it with a beard and a hammer, and you’ve almost got the idea of a Hammerer.”
- Johondor, Dwarf Storyteller
-
So I thought I had finally decided on Black Orc, but then I saw how awesome Choppas look with dual-choppas. Damn.
I also want to make a Dwarf Hammerer, and Witch Hunters look pretty awesome as well.
-
@Cap'n:

Yeah, both types of Orcs looks pretty neat. Some of the Black Orc armor and shield screenshots look really wicked, though.
-
I finally decided to be a Black Orc. I'll definitely make a few alts; Choppa, Hammerer, and Witch Hunter for certain, maybe a Goblin Shaman or Herder.
One thing I think is pretty cool about this game; each race has 4 basic character types: melee tank, melee berserker, support mage, and offensive long-range. But they're each modified and changed to suit the race, so everyone has the same options, but they're unique. Pretty neat.
-
Exactly.
Unlike WoW, where races share the same basic classes, each race in Warhammer has their own unique classes. Some share basic roles, like tanking, but the Black Orcs will probably play nothing like the Chosen, for example.
Never been fond of having alternates, so Gohn'll probably just stick to his Black Orc.
-
I mainly want alternates so I can try other classes that look interesting. I'll still primarily use the Black Orc, but if/when that gets a little dull, I have other things to play as.
-
Oh, it's understandable. Plenty of people do it.
Just always preferred havin' one character, is all. Two, at the most. Usually, one is a tank/melee and one is a healer.
-
Honestly, it felt weird for there to be troll mages, priests, etc. in WoW.
A specialized Goblin Shaman, however.. great.
-
Trolls were the best Horde priests, ironically.
You rarely saw Troll Priests and Mages, though, since most everybody rolled Undead for those classes. Since they're tools.
-
didnt undead have the highest base int of all the horde races? (still lower then the lowest of alliance races though for some reason)
in what way were trolls superior? trolls had crappy racials in the beginning.. think their priest spell sucked as well for a while…
-
Base stats mean shit once you reach the higher levels.
Moreover, the Troll Priest spell is the best one for the Horde.
-
i dont rember the priest spells.
could you remind me what the undead one is what the troll one used to be before they changed it and what they changed it into?
-
Don't remember off-hand. It'd be easier if you looked it up on Thottbot or the official World of Warcraft website.
