Plot Holes and Explanation Thread

Well basically the idea of this thread is to find any things that don't make sense or couldn't actually happen in the One Piece world and to try and give an explanation to solve it (lame explanations such as its a shonen manga aren't allowed :P)

For example:

Ussop in general - how is he still alive….

He gets completely battered in every single fight he's in yet manages to walk away unhurt. He gets hit by a 4 tonne bat to the face in alabasta then a couple of minutes later he's running around town looking for the bomb. Jumps off a 100ft tower as its blown up yet only cracks a few ribs, and can still run about the place. He must have broken his nose at least 10 times within the space of a couple of months.

A possible explanation could be that he's eaten a devil fruit that helps him heal quickly. This could be true for two reasons. Firstly whenever Usopp is seen in water, White sea in skypiea, crocodile's casino, Enies Lobby he has needed someones help to get out. Secondly out of all the Straw Hats he is the one who gets beat up the most yet he is never injured for more than a couple of hours.

Sanji's Devil kick - how does it work....

He spins so his leg catches fire....why? How does setting your foot on fire make it more powerful anyway apart from the fact that you burn them as well as kick them. Why doesn't he hurt himself?

A possible scientific reason for his leg catching fire could be to do with centrifugal force and friction of the air and stuff. Or alternatively the spinning could be used to confuse his opponents while his hand sneakily reaches into his pocket for his cigarette lighter. As for why it doesn't hurt him, the possible reason could be because he's 'ard. Any person who can kick down a building don't care if they get set on fire.

Franky's unlimited supply of cannonballs - does he really have them all stuffed inside himself...

During the Enies Lobby fight I don't know how many times Franky used "weapons left" but it was a lot. His body is simply not big enough to fit all those cannonballs, as well as all that other stuff he's got (chains, cola tank, extra legs, missiles etc).

Possible explanation is that after a couple of shots of weapons left Oda misses out a bit of the fight where Franky runs about regathering his cannonballs for another use. He could have some ultra high tech technology that materialises cannon balls from molecules and particles. Or probably the best explanation would be that this is Oda's One Piece world where things like unlimited cannonballs are a given.

Anyway post any plot holes that you come up with and give an explanation as to how they could be resolved...

Usopp and Sanji were out, so that leaves Nami, Zoro, Chopper, Robin and Luffy. However, Luffy was inside the snake already. In fact Oda showed him being amazed at all the treasure in the snake's body.

The plothole is that later on, it was shown that mantra shouldn't be able to detect people inside the snake.

Luffinator, there is one problem with your Ussop's devil fruit theory. At Lougetown, he dived in the water and started sniping enemies during the rainstorm.

What about when Franky threw Usopp into the water? Usopp stared at the bottom of Merry and came up by himself.

about Sanji's Leg. It's similar to a technique common honeybees use to defeat a greater enemy. When their hive is invaded by one larger bee, they surround him and flap their wings using the friction to create heat. The heat reaches to a high temperature and with the bees maintaining it for so long, they suffocate the enemy. The point is that Sanji spun so fast, he used his own body heat, increased the temperature and held it for a long time.

as for Franky's ammo, it's just a cartoon. It really doesn't all have to make sense. :)

i dont really remeber how he counted with the mantra thingy, too long since i read the arc… but is it possible that he neglected Chopper even though he wasnt put out of comission and counted Usopp and Sanji because they werent entirely dead yet?

or did he count chopper as a blue sea dweller somewhere else where the numbers make sense?

Yeah, I really am getting sick of people dissecting this manga. Fantasy isn't supposed to be a science.

That answer to everyone is "cause that's how it happened, okay?" Usopp survived a 4-ton bat just like some friend of yours survived a car crash (I've seen it, and the scars. Today he's fully healed).

The devil kick is friction, and it's Sanji "heart" or skill or whatever that prevents him from lighting on fire–or it's his shoes. And Brooke can have normal human functions because his devil fruit did it. These facts are far too limiting, for example, to those in the latest chapter who've asked, "how can Brooke heal?", did they not think that Brooke devil fruit has that ability?

This limited thinking is what's causing most of these plot holes. They exist, but most of them are just confusion.

Even Luffy surviving Crocodile's stab shouldn't be a plot hole, cause we never as a matter of fact saw any of Luffy's vital organs get stabbed. And so on.

when he mentions the five straw hats its shows those five people. I'm pretty sure if he counted Chopper, but it depends on if he counted Holy or the snake since they were "fighters" as well.

Heh, I partly agree with Cyring there, especially with the plot holes that have been brought up so far. As far as I'm concerned it's like nit picking, and common not only is it manga, it's Oda, if Ussop's ability to survive, or Diable Jumbe are gonna be called a plot holes, then you're gonna want to add every other abnormal occurance or thing in One Piece, and as we all know there's a lot. Everything from Zoro's Santoryu to the geology of friggin Eneis lobby! I mean common man just kick off your shoes and enjoy the humor of Ussop always surviving, and the awesome sight of Sanji's Diable Jambe.

This is the picture in question. unless something is above them casting its shadow, the shadows are theirs. i can tell because of the sharp angles, the chairs can't make an irregularity like what we see without having mutiple lights at many angles.

One Plot hole I've thought of is this:

It was back when Luffy was in Lougetown and he was about to get his head cut off by Buggy. I'm sure luffy's strong enough to break away from some wood. And if not, he could have stretched his leg back and then snapped it back, breaking the wood. He had plenty of time, cause Buggy was talking half the time.

But yeah, it's a manga.

I don't like "It's a manga" as an excuse.

It's a sign of a quality story if there are few holes and inconsistencies, and when they appear, logical explanations can be found.

It's really easy as a series gets long (and OP is a long series) to start contradicting yourself.

Remember the whole story Oda created to rationalise how a door reappeared after being knocked down in Chapter 1? He obviously cares about it when the fans see consistency.

Theoretically yes, if the amperage was low enough. volts x amps = wattage, in the crude formula.

Anyway, the biggest plothole I can think of is how Krieg escaped the Grand Line without being ravaged by Seakings. There are others, though.

Obviously it's not real life. Its nice to see a high consistency rate in anything fictional but not essential. I believe there are whole sites devoted to finding mistakes in movies and whatnot.

Oda is obviously working hard to close off these loose ends - such as the "Gun can eat devils fruit" thing which may be explained by this marine professor. Obviously its going to be a wierd and wonderful explanation but its a wierd and wonderful world within one piece :)

On one hand - yes it is a manga, its not real - On the other hand - It's important for people to feel that the world of one piece is consistant. I think this is to do with One Piece having had good and intellegent plot twists and reasonings thus far.

Plot holes might need explanations, yes, but characters taking tons and TONS of damage (getting electrocuted repeatedly, being exploded by a bomb, getting Shigan'd in the chest a billion times) and still living can really only be LOGICALLY explained by "It's a shonen manga."

Same with Diable Jambe… unless it's that Sanji has fireproof socks or something. He just spins really fast and his legs catch on fire. That's really all the explanation we need.

Since it's a shonen manga, the fighters all have an inhuman amount of stamina/resilience and thus can withstand a lot of things that would kill a normal person. That's just how it is.

Everything is explained by a very detailed and complicated logic that nobody could understand except Oda himself. Unsurprisingly, Oda also invented it.

Well Enel counted luffy two hours into the survival game. Yet luffy wasn't counted in within the three hours.

Enel should've counted luffy in with the number of fighters in the three hours if he counted him just an hour ago. In fact he should've knew Luffy was in the snake in the first place then. He just realized Luffy was there AFTER he was out of the snake.
He couldn't have counted any other blue sea dweller within the two hours since it showed Luffy's face during the final pictures.

The armor would protect him from the lightning, as armor, chain mail, sitting in a car, and other stuff like that forms what is called a "Faraday cage", which diverts electricity around it, preventing it from shocking somebody. How did it still hurt Gan Fall?

Sanji is wearing not-so-flammable pants. 'nuff said (even though oda's own reasoning is way more strange/excuse-ish). The reason for it causing more damage is because of a surprised enemy, and the fact that Jabura actually stated that the heat was really intense as if his insides were burning up.

Main characters don't die. Therefore, Usopp and the rest can't die unless their heads are cut off, bodies are split into two, hearts are stabbed (explicitely stating so), or Nami's/Robin's boobs are chopped off. Even brains being stabbed could be excused.

there's sumthin dat's been confusin' me for a while. Brook said salt has the power of the sea and if ya put it in da zombie's mouths, they die. But wouldn't this affect Luffy, Chopper, or Robin? Luffy never seems to get weak when he eats Sanji's food, does Sanji use salt?

Why can't Chopper SMELL Usopp when he's in his Sogeking outfit?

guita: the logical explanation is that salt isnt as strong as seastone and thus not enough to weaken DF users. (zombies arent themselves DF users but an effect of a DF and would probably need less to weaken/disrupt)
either that ot sanji isnt using salt thats … distilled? (is that the right word?) from the sea. which means it doesnt hold any power of the sea.

Strange one: dunno.. perhaps Usopp has an overwhelming smell of gunpowder? and as both of them are snipers theres no reason sogeking wouldnt smell of gunpowder either?

that makes sense. or it is possible that since Usopp fell into the water, he cleared up his scent and when Chopper smelled him, he classified the scent for a new person.
2) Chopper could've smelled Usopp's scent but he assumed Sogeking was with Usopp and got his stench.
3) one of the above or choppa got too excited. :)

But Chopper can, like, sniff specific crew members out of a city, right? You'd think after being with Usopp so long he would know his smell (I'm sure other people smoke and cook seafood, but he could probably find Sanji in a crowd).

and Sanji's smell is a rather unique smell of his ciggarets brand and first rate seafood =P the smell from his food is top notch… noone else is going around smelling like sanjis food save maybe Zeff...

i really have no clue about why chopper isnt smelling Usopp as Sogeking. maybe he is smelling him but the two seems to different to be the same person. why would usopp hide form him anyway? or a combination of all the reasons guita and i came up with?
