Eh, for those who frequently hang around LJ (fandom communities in particular), I'm sure you've already got a glimpse of what's been going on. As far I know, the Harry Potter fandom's been hit hard, not sure about anime/manga communities, though I'm pretty sure they're on their toes.

For those of you who don't know, LJ users and comms listing pedophilia, shouta, loli, incest, etc. as interests are supposedly being reported by this groupWarriors For Innocence. This group (which reeks of sketchy vibes) basically claims to prevent online predators from striking.

Their method of attack seems to be first searching for users/communities by interests and then reporting listed names to LJ. LJ of course, is allowed to ban people/comms if they're posting "objectionable" material.

If you want to know more, this person seems to have compiled a fair amount of info and links regarding the issue as well as a list of suspended users and comms.

Funny thing is, I've read that Warriors For Innocnece (what a shit name) do not have actual legal claims, nor have they been through any legal process for what they are doing, ie. no lawyers, no court orders. All they do is to point the fingers at users/comm, and LJ would more or less comply.

And Zephos, these whack-jobs sound more like uber-conservatives who walk around with poles stuck up their bungholes, rather than "uber-liberals".

Meh, I think that people are pissed off that their fandom comms (which are based on fiction) are deleted in the process of these knobfaces' pointless attempt to rid the internet of all things pedophilia. Besides, it's not like doing this kind of thing will truly prosecute pedophiles. I'm all for skinning pedophiles, but not from radical seek-and-destroy groups who think they're all-knowing.

Still, it's amusing to see those that think themselves "righteous" try to be vigilantes.

I'm with captain usopp. I think this whole debacle is the effort of a big bunch of soccer moms. So if that's true, I guess we can say parents are doing their job – in a weird, self-righteous sense.

Hey, I'm all for putting pedophiles behind bars and out of the sun for a very very long time, but this whole mess sounds a tad shifty. We need to be critical and wary of this kind of witch-hunt/mass hysteria, not simply applauding their intention to get rid of internet pedos. Because it will be sad if they take this further and wage wars against fandoms that are legitimate, but are simply against the WFI's aesthetic and personal judgement. For example, yaoi and yuri fandoms (assuming that WFI are a bunch of uber-conservatives). That's the way mass hysteria tends to work anyhow.

I heard about this today. Just to let everyone know, don't view Warriors of Innocence's site.

It contains adware, spyware, keyloggers, and all the like. They did it as an attempt to gain information on "pedophiles" who might have just happened to click their site.

If you have, I suggest running some scans.

Ok, after reading through this thread a bit, I see the connection, but really, when I think about childrens literature, I don't make pedophiles a connection. "ooh, mr chatterbox is so sexy, I must be a perv" O.o When I think of hairy potter, I think of little kids picking up a book and enjoying a fantasy adventure. The same way we all enjoy OP. And if they are attacking Hairy Potter LJ's, isn't that affecting the innocent LJ's as well?

As greg puts it, I'm not standing up for pedophiles, I just don't think 2 wrongs make a right.

I've met my fair share of sexual predators online, and I can assure you that none of them were through Livejournal (Might have something to do with the friendslock on more or less all of my entries). If you're smart about it, it's not going to happen (or if it DOES happen, you'll know how to handle it). Unfortunately, most kids don't know any better because their parents don't teach them any better.
