Evolution?

Perhaps I've been reading comic books too much, but I've been starting to think about the evolution of the human race. My friend says it's not possible because we've removed natural selection, but isn't that what global warming is for? It'll probably kill a whole load of us, then the remaining survivors' offspring will come out of the womb with changes.

And doesn't evolution take thousands of years? And hasn't the human race been around for about that long?
And if I'm wrong, what the hell is junk dna used for?

I'm not thinking big changes like people bursting into flame or some guy having a primordial black hole in his stomach, but little things like wings or gills….

I think, that the way we live now, in this un natural environment, with all it's rays, and gadgets, and chemicals, and what nots, will change us eventually. I mean, look at all the wierd diseases and medical conditions nowadays. look at our eating habits. I like the luxuries of modern civilization, but I try to tone it down when I can, you know. Try to eat healthy, try to ride my bike. The less unatural crap going into our system, the better.

I sometimes think that we won't. If you think about it, We end up adapting to our sorroundings but without the need to change our bodies. For example in the winter, we never adapted by growing a thick layer of fur, we wear coats. We don't need gills since we have gear for going underwater as well (which btw, natural selection doesn't mean that if we start living underwater, the offspring on two humans will magically be born with gills).

Evolution for us would take shorter time because we are able to think rationally unlike animals, who think on instinct and evolve slowley. think about our primitive ancestors and how they lived. Our evolution is affected by our environment and we're able to adapt to any situation

To the best of my knowledge evolution is a gradual process and not a sort of benchmark where one day we're normal the next day we have gills.

That doesn't necessarily mean we won't adapt. We'll have to learn to live underwater once the full effect of global warming hits, anyway.

Just because we haven't succeeded the first time (and many other) time(s) doesn't mean that it's not impossible to stop it.

Besides I like my land. I would much rather try and find a way to stop global warming then learning how to live underwater.

Puttng aside the grammar mistake in that sentence (you said 'doesn't mean it's impposible not to stop it' instead of 'doesn't mean it's impossible to stop it') it's a matter of brains that decides whether or not we'll stop it. We'd have to invent some sort of fuel that doesn't give off carbon emissions, or water-powered cars, or something….

I didn't say that. I'm saying humans will have to swim a lot more when the planet gets flooded, thus making them develop gills. After a time, of course.

Well yeah, if we want to stop global warming, we are obviously going to have to try and come up with that type of stuff.

But if we wanted to live underwater, we would have to come up with a crap load of stuff too.

That, and I think it would be more money to try to invent how to live underwater then trying to come up with ways to stop global warming. Although, trying to stop global warming would still cost a lot of money.

If it's gills what you want, be ready to wait hundreds of thousands years. There isn't truly isolated gene pools anymore anyway so the human evolution be will pretty none existing. But since we will be able to enhance our race by ourselves - we have already started to fix our "flaws" - humans with gills might not be that far away. Lets say in 200 or 300 years, give or take, a nutty professor will try that and will succeed.

Okay, there is no way that humans can adapt THAT quickly to a change that happens in a snap. Most likely, the best way we'll survive is that we'll find something man-made to adapt, and then, in a good million years, we'll gain certain biological ways to cope, such as gills or wings. Remember that we are not Pokemon; we can't evolve in a flash! XD

I do believe that global warming is a huge threat that will affect us in our lifetimes, even if the effects may only be minimal as compared to what the generations will face.

And evolution is the only reason we're here today, in my opinion. I don't believe that some supernatural being created us, or even 'got the cogs turning.' I have seen proof that evolution and global warming exist.

Unless God comes down and kicks me in the shin for being 'teh dirty heathen,' my beliefs are set in stone.

Yeah it's true the damage has already done, but I meant trying to stop further damage. Though realistically, we probably won't ever completely "stop" it, but we should try to minimize it.

I don´t think it is biologically possible for a species to evolve all of a sudden - the time required is at least several million years. Random mutations can always happen, yet it is more likely for mankind and most other living creatures to just die when the evironmental circumstances become too worse too fast unless of course we develop the necessary technologies to stop those changes.

Besides, the concept of a creating God and the biological theory of evolution are in principle the same as they both provide an ultimate reason for the existence of all beings.
