This is tough. It's between Katsura, Oda, and Inoue.

            I LOVE Arina Tanemura's art style, but her characters all look pretty much the same. X_x.;

Inoue has a great style, and Vagabond is incredible in-particular… but my vote goes to (completely biased) Kentaro Miura who does Berserk. I can't imagine how long some of his chapters must take! 😮

Oda, Inoue and Fujishima. Can't ever get tired of looking at the manga panels of Urd, Peorth and Hild, especially in the more recent chapters. He doesn't quite draw his men as well as he does his women, but hey, we don't exactly watch/read it for the likes of Keichi Morisato, do we? 🙂

I kind of liked when Fujishima drew noses a bit more pronounced… maybe it's just me but the last few volumes it seems like he doesn't draw them anymore, when a character is facing you anyway.

They both have such unique art styles.

I love Oda and Toriyama's art.

Two artists I love who I'm surprised haven't been mentioned:

                      • Kohta Hirano (Hellsing's art is CRAZY awesome)
                      • Nobuyuki Anzai (Flame of Recca's art was PHENOMINAL toward the end of the series, and MAR has fantastic art as well).

he is simply amazing and is by far my favorite artist.

Nope, it's not just you, darling. His noses have been reduced to minimal lines and dots. But I kinda think it goes well with the over all roundness of his characters features.

But damn, the way he draws the goddesses'/demonesses' hair…

And you know the fashion sense is just amazing.

No doubt, my #1 favorite artist. The guy's unbelievable.
My #2 is a tie between Watsuki of Kenshin fame and Katsuhiro Otomo of Akira fame.
Others include Toriyama, Oda (Of Course B) ), Togashi, Yuu Watase, and Goseki Kojima/Kazuo Koike.

Edit- Oh Yeah! I forgot Naoki Urasawa. The art may not 'wow' you, but it compliments the brilliant story perfectly.

Miura (Berserk) - so detailed and yet so clear (unlike Hagiwara from Bastard!!)
Toriyama (Dragon Ball) - that guy sure know how to display movement
Urasawa (Monster, 20th Century Boys) - characters all so unique and realistic

I also like Oda and Kishimoto, but they tend to draw most of their chars the same way, with small details changed.

A small problem I have with Inoue is that the art basically consumes Vagabond. The volumes only feel like they only have a chapter's worth of story sometimes.

I'll be boring and say Iou Kuroda (Nasu, Sexy Voice and Robo…). He has a phasing like no other artist have and such a warm beauty in his art and writing. Also somebody should lure Hayao Miyazaki (Nausicaä) to do more comics. And I can't live without saying Shin Takahashi (Saikano, Kimi no Kakera...) too. That guy is so powerful writer. Ah, and lately I've been really fond of Minoru Furuya (Himizu, Shigatera...) and Taiyo Matsumoto (Hanaotoko, Number Five...). I must get my hands on all of their works. So, that would be my top 5. Sorry, I couldn't sattle just for one.

I agree. It is a bit problem but sometimes he can draw pictures worth of a thousand words. Hideo Yamamoto's Homunculus is even more terrific, a volume of it literally feels like a chapter.

For Jump artists, I personally think that no series has had better artwork, character designs, and storyline than Watsuki's Rurouni Kenshin, so he'd probaably be my choice. I need to see more of Busuo Renkin, though.

For outside jump, Hiromu Arakawa, of Fullmetal Alchemist fame. In a word, BRILLIANT!

It's a tie between Yoshihiro Togashi (Yuyu Hakusho) and the guy that did Trigun (I think it's Nobuhiro Watsuki).

Favorite artists of ALL TIME: Oda, of course, but also Minekura Kazuya. That woman is a GODDESS. I have never seen comic art glorified like that by anyone but her. It's true art. She puts color and theme concepts into her drawings that bring out deep meanings and personality of characters. Her newest stuff is the most conceptual manga art I have ever, ever seen. And Oda is just Oda.

Other favorites include Ai Yazawa and Anno Moyoko. Those are the two tied for second. Their modern, edgy and expressive comics really go against the traditional grain, and I can't get enough of it. The exquisite character design and amazing fashion in Paradise Kiss (Yazawa) would blow anyone's mind, and the facial expressions and layed-back, easy illustration in Happy Mania and Honey & Bees (Anno) make for a hilarious and memorable read.

And then comes Bleach. Kubo Tite's bold, simple designs, gorgeous characters, and creepy Hollows are never boring. He dresses his cast in damn-near-haute couture, even if it is casual, and facial expressions are great. A++. I can barely put him in third, it's so close between him and the other two ladies.

So the list looks like this:
                                                              1. Oda/Minekura
                                                              2. Yazawa/Anno
                                                              3. Kubo

I'm very picky about my art. These people are geniuses.

I too will say Inoue because i love the way he brought the games to life in Slam Dunk and one of the factors that helped was the art work. Tite Kubo is also a great artist, but I liked Zombie Powder more than I like Bleach. On a similar note, I like Aoyama Gosho's work, but more because of Yaiba than Detective Conan.

Yasuhiro Nightow had some great character designs for Trigun, but sometimes his action scenes become a bit… too chaotic for my tastes, I suppose is how to describe it. I've never really gotten into Trigun Maximum for that reason as sometimes I'd come across a scene where I didn't have the slightest idea what was going on until it was over with.

                                                                                            Complicating things since 2009.

Toriyama goes through ups and downs in his weekly serials such as Dragon Ball, but if he actually sits down to design video game character or draw a one-shot I absolutely love his artwork for some reason. He's got a way of making everything ''fit'' and his art often just breathes ''fun''.

Oda's scores big for his never ending creativity in his art and designs.

Takeshi Obata's artwork is incredibly detailed and all that, but I don't find it all that fun to look at for some reason. Naoki Urusawa makes incredible manga, but I don't find his artwork duely impressive in any sense but matching the mood either.

Hiromu Arakawa, however, has a sense of detailed art and creativity I absolutely adore.

However, ranking top I'd probably say Nobuhiro Watsuki. He's not incredibly gifted, which sometimes shows in terms of proportions, but his art just breathes feeling, especially in Kenshin, and I can't help but be impressed by it.

1 Reply Last reply Reply Quote 0
