Yeah, I've been recommending Giant Robo for years. It's been my favorite anime for a long time. I've watched it too many times to count.
Seems like more people are finally getting around to watching it these days. I guess because of the inexpensive DVD boxset. I'm glad that it's finally getting the respect it deserves.

Also, there's a new manga by the director (with art by the guy who drew the sCRYed manga). I have to thank Cap'n Carter for telling me about this manga. It's related to the OVA series.

There's also going to be a new anime, but it's unrelated to the OVA series. I think it might be related to the original Giant Robo manga by Yokoyama instead.
Oh My God That Image Brought Tears Of Awesome To My Face!
I just got done with it a few days ago, and it was pretty incredible. There wasn't a single character I could dislike; even the bishie kinds had some real depth to themselves. My favorite character out of them all would either be Tetsugyu, Alberto, or Vogler. But all them I had liked in their own way.
I'd like to check out the manga adaptation if it's scanned or for sale in English.
So far no one seems to be translating the new manga. It's monthly (it runs in Champion Red I think), so it's only up to chapter 8 though. The first volume was recently released in Japan.

This is an archive of a really good article that is gone. It shows what all the characters looked like in their original manga forms and tells what Yokoyama manga each is from.

I didn't absolutely love it, but I did find it very unique and enjoyable. It may have had to do with watching it subbed on Region 3 DVDs some years ago, so I may get around to watching the Media Blasters release one of these days.

You should have watched the Manga Entertainment VHS versions. They had excellent subtitles and were fairly inexpensive back then.
As for the new Media Blasters DVD…it has new subtitles, a new dub, and the Manga Entertainment dub. I was kind of hoping it would have the Manga Entertainment subtitles too, because that's the version I was used to watching.
I couldn't stand Daisaku. I think he's the one character in this OVA I couldn't bring myself to like.
I've said plenty about this series, so I don't feel like repeating myself. It's super awesome.
I wish someone would start scanslating the series, but everyone's too busy doing Death Note or some other lame, bandwagon series.

I mentioned it in my first post in this topic, but I don't know much about it other than it's not related to the OVA series and Imagawa apparently doesn't have anything to do with it.

I do have the Economy Boxset now too though. And I still have my old VHS tapes. But I don't know how many people here also have the Phantom Sphere. It looks cool, but it's not the most convenient boxset out there. It only has jewel cases inside, so you have to take your DVDs out of their cases. It did come with an extra disc though (that wasn't in the more recent Economy Boxset release). It just has commercials and stuff. But there's a really cool Super Robot Wars game commercial with Giant Robo.

Why is that? Doesn't the manga relate to some of things Big Fire plans were or somewhere along those lines?

The OVA wasn't just an adaption of the original Giant Robo story; it was, more or less, an amalgam of the author's various stories. I believe it happened because the director couldn't get the rights to use the main cast other than Daisaku and Robo; so, he asked the author if he could draw from his other manga, and he agreed.
For example, the character of Big Fire is, more or less, Babel II in his entirety. Babel II was a story in which the titular character was a powerful psychic with three guardians; a transforming panther, a giant pterodactyl like beast, and a massive mech from the sea. Isn't that awesome?
This resulted in a really colorful and unique cast of characters; they were all pretty unique from each other. And I don't think the TV series can do this.
Another thing about the OAV I loved was it was based more on the awesome people, and Giant Robo itself wasn't a huge focal point. Another thing I doubt will happen will happen in the show.

Well, my understanding is that the Big Fire organization in the OVA is totally different from the original incarnation (from Yokoyama's 1960s manga). I think only Daisaku, the GR robots, and the name Big Fire is from the original manga.
He said that Giant Robo was a difficult series to work on and took ten years to complete. He said that he was told to make a series totally different from the manga, and he wasn't allowed to use any characters from the manga. He compensated for this by adding characters from different manga series made by the same artist as Giant Robo. He noted that for a giant robot anime it had lots of martial arts and was more of a hit in America than it was in Japan.

Thats how I felt as well about it being based more on the humans then the robots. But why didn't you like Daisaku?
Seeing as he will being using his story (whats left) in the manga are some of the parts going to be flashbacks explaining more on the backround of the characters like why was Yoshi skin blue or the Taisou* and Alberto rivalry? Will the manga as well maybe start off where the OVA ended?

I think Carter found out that the new manga takes place in a parallel/alternate world or something. Because there are already some storyline differences from the OVA series, although it uses the same characters.
But, I'm thinking Imagawa might use some of his leftover ideas too. But I dunno.
As for the Taisou/Alberto rivalry as far as the OVA is concerned (it will be different in the new manga though, because of a major storyline change in the early chapters), here's what the liner notes say:

! and later Imagawa said:

Yeah, I posted the link to that archive earlier in this thread (post #5). You might have gotten it from the Coolest Organizations thread though, because I remember posting it there too. Also, my brother (he's not a user here) posted it on a Giant Robo forum as well. I was disappointed when I found that the site was gone, so I used the Wayback Machine and found out that it had an archive.

Yeah, it would be a "prequel" if that's what you mean by flashback. My post above yours has the parts from the liner notes concerning the Domino Operation in the "spoilers" box in case you missed it.
I didn't like Daisaku because he spent most of the series crying or acting like an idiot. That's the problem with child protagonists.

Carter- Use DVD shrink to rip part of the VOB you want (or at least around what you want). Use Auto Guardian Knot (AutoGK) to convert VOB to AVI. Clip what you want from AVI using VirtualDub. It is as easy as that.
Sorry for going off topic. Anywho, I need to rewatch the series. I know the first time I saw it, I found the ending funny.

I got most of that to work but when I go to save it from Virtual Dub the file size is like 4gbs for not even the entire episode….
Make sure video is on Direct Stream Copy or something like that.

The fights between the human characters are awesome.
Anything with Alberto is pretty much solid gold on the screen
hes definatly the 1st villain that I felt sorry for at the end.
He was my second fav. villian but Koen-shaku* beats him to first.
