i dont now which chapter he is in the coverstory of though.

Chapter 92, Volume 11 is where he makes his first appearance. That was way back in 1999 so it's pretty amazing how long Oda had been keeping such a huge secret.

Probably 439… The first time we saw him was on the title page of chapter 92... but that was still unconfirmed who he was.... 439 or so is probably first time he is recognized.

In the actually story he appears in Water 7 in chapter 431, is a major part of 432, leaves in 433, appears again in 438 and is left at Water 7 in 439

Given the fact that this is Oda we're talking about, the master of suspense/surprises/and what not, it's really not all that amazing.
Anyways in addition to what's already been posted, if you're looking for even more of Garp try reading Romance Dawn, Version 2. He makes a brief appearance in this early precursor to the final version of Romance Dawn and replaces Shank's role as the one who gave Luffy his hat; apparently because Oda didn't want people finding out about Shanks before the final manga got published.

He's not officially named in this version however, despite still being Luffy's grand-dad, and is a little different from his official manga counterpart.

Yeah, reading that again…I'm amazed no one in all this time speculated that Garp was Luffy's Grand-dad.
Hah, even if someone did he would probably have been called crazy and simply said its just a similar design.

Someone wondered if Garp was a D because he displayed the signs of a D. That was a bout a month before then. I forget who that was. Though to be honest, we've come to know the series over 10 years, it should be clear by now who will turn out to be a D and who not.
