Humm, so 5 times the size of Earth…? I must look further into this. I may be able to use this to my advantage...
Does anyone have anymore information on this?

I know it's just an artist rendering, but.... is it just me, or does the planet look identical to Utapau?

It's kinda old news (Jan. 8, 2006), but it's still pretty awesome.

Maybe a long long time ago that planet was inhabited with advanced civilizations, like earth, but their planet became overpopulated, and their star was dying, so they created a giant ship to send people to Earth.

The Ship crash landed, and since people were used to such an advanced culture, they didn't know how to rebuild an advanced civilization on the new planet, and the evolution of technology started all over again, with the ancient ship lost to the depths of History.

Weird my science teacher mentioned this today too…I wonder why if it's such old news.

            Anyway, it's pretty exciting regradless.

I remember hearing about this a long time ago. I was sad that it had taken the place of Pluto, solely because I like the name Pluto.

I'll probably here about this in my science class soon.

Except we'll all turn far shorter and wider due to the gravity being so tremendous.

Well, it's not that much of a difference… Not like, Venus, or Jupter. Plus, we would probably live in a protective bubble, if we were there.

Actually, if we were to get shorter, it would be unnoticeable, however, we would get considerably stronger.

EDIT: Here's a list of 694 articles for this discovery. Lobster, why don't you choose a few more pictures?

It's cool and all, but people kinda forget with this kind of news that interstellar travel on this kind of scale is impossible. Or at the least, not remotely feasible.
So even if there are aliens there, we won't be meeting in any useful capacity for a few thousand years.

True, and that they couldn't even be there anymore. IIRC my science teacher was saying that the light we see are millions of light years old so that what we could be seeing now is that that's solar system's star could have burned out by now in current time and if there was life they could all be dead by now anyway.

While there's always been a chance to find another Earth-like planet, the fact that they found one only 20 light years away is what amazes me the most. In terms of the size of the galaxy, that is ridiculously close, practically a block away. Give a little more time for rocket technology to further advance, and you've got a realistic chance sending probes and, dare I say, people one day.

Yeah its a pretty big discovery. The biggest discovery isnt that we found a planet like that, but they found it so fast and from such a dim star thanks to the new observation technology that people began to use like 3 months ago. Its a milestone in front of many that are sure to come as they find more and more planets that are likely hospitable for life.

And just to clarify… the images they are seeing are only 20 years old in terms of what we are seeing from the past (since 20 light years means... it took that light 20 years to reach here). There could always have been a drastic problem that could occur on that planet in that time... but for the sake general geological standard time, what we see from that planet is probably what will be there even 20 more years down the road.

Now lets get that new propulsion technology up to match with this discovery :3 (there trying to research anti-matter propulsion that is hypothetically supposed to go 1/4th the speed of light.... that means it would ONLY take 80 years to reach with that type of propulsion >.>... yeah not happening soon lol)

Wouldn't it take like 20 years with lightspeed? Unless we discover a way to go at least near the speed of light we aren't sending anything even remotely close to that thing.

It's still a helluva lot closer than the other planets they've found that are several million light years away. I'd say that it's a realistic idea that in the future, and I'm not saying near future here, I'm talking somewhat distant future, that people may possibly travel to this planet. Of course Probes would be sent first to check out if the planet is indeed inhabitable.

GASP! It's Mondas! Finally back XD (For all those who aren't in the know, Mondas is from the Doctor Who serial, the Tenth Planet, where it was thrown out of our solar system billions upon billions of years ago)

Anyways yea, its old news, I do believe there was a topic on this last year aswell.

                                              Odd.

Wikipedia just put it into it's news.

My science teacher says there is the possibility of other element based lifeforms instead of the boring carbon base.

Question: We are looking at it from twenty years ago, so (hypothetically) if we deployed some unlucky bastard, his view of it would speed up, right?

First of all, with our current technology, we couldn't send an unlucky bastard and think that he'll get there in 20 years.

However, if we had technology to travel at or close to 99% the speed of light, then it's true, he would take longer to age, and a 40 year round trip to this guy might seem like a couple of days, but chances are all of his friends and family back on Earth would be no longer around when he gets back, since Time moved onwards without him.

Which is why, if they were to send people to this planet, if it is indeed inhabitable, they would send a colony of people, not just the highly scientific minds, but the hard working construction people, the doctors, the mechanics, real average Joe type people.

If somebody get's a grazy idea to send people to colonate the planet… does the planet have a name already? I wouldn't want to live in a planet with a silly name. Anyway, so let's say Chinese get's a grazy idea to send a colony - they should have a few spare citizen - will the planet belong to Chinese then? It would be like the Capitalistic planet of China (it would probably rebel against China after a while and demand independence).

The problem with colonating planets is that its gonna be so tough to actually maintain it, since if anything happens, there is no way to get anything out to them, I could see it now, if for some bizzarre reason an alien does decide to invade there and they actually manage it and such, and they communicate with us, by the time we reach there, everyone will be dead.

personally, I'd say ANY sort of life on that planet would count as intellegant, sure they may not be as intellegant as us, but if they are alive, then they have the survival instinct, which makes em intellegant.

Personally, if they know of us, AND they are watching us, AND they have gotten speech working and all, and if they DO manage to get all the way over here, I dun see why they wouldn't share their stuff, I mean, if they do all that, then I seriously doubt they'll want to kill us and use our planet.

Have you ever read anything by Orson Scott Card by any chance?

As for other planets farther away outside of our galaxy then maybe if we devloped the technology for it thought i doubt those places are uninhabitated. People or some form of beings probably live there already and i doubt they would welcome us with open arms. i predict if we ever do ever travel light speed, with our current form of technology and the way we discover things i predict the earliest and i mean earliest time we will discover the way to do this is in 300 years.
