I still say Brooke's "sword" could be more like a very sharp violin bow.
It's kinda hard to imagine a violin bow being made of steel or something like that.

Actually, it was kind of hard to see what Brooke had in his cane… it looked like strings to me. How cool would that be? Brooke cuts people with GUITAR STRINGS.

However, if Brooke is the source of Ryuma's skills then...could he be Zoro's opponent for this arc? I mean, the only problem with Ryuma is that he's just a general zombie, which makes him below Absolom and Perona. While I'm not big on ranks, I always found that weird. Brooke is still kind of a mystery right now, who knows what will happen?

I like the aspect of Brooke's "lightweightness". It allows him to walk on water, jump real high, etc. It gives him abilities the other strawhats don't have. I don't see why people wouldn't want him joining. He's fresh new character and very interesting

I really think people are overreacting to any Franky-Usopp and Brook-Zoro comparisons. Brook uses some kind of bizarre humming sword technique, while Zoro uses more traditional attacks with multiple swords. Usopp is a skilled and resourceful (if a bit cowardly) marksman, while Franky is a strong-ass war machine. I don't think they're too similar.

You can only have so many characters before they start to resemble eachother, it's only natural that there will be similarities between them.
Looks like we're in for a lot of information about Thriller Bark next chapter, sounds good to me, it's an interesting place.
Anyone else think that Zoro will take on Ryuuma while Brook handles Jigoro, kind of mirroring eachothers fights?

I want Brooke to join (I hope he really is a good musician - we didn't get to see him play), but it seems suspicious that a potential crewmember fights in a similar manner to an "older" Straw Hat. So far every new crewmember had a completely different fighting style, or at least an original explanation of their abilities, as in Franky's case.
Also, I'm wondering why Robin didn't try to attack Tallaran or get that little spiders off her, when she was caught in the net. She could still use her DF power, right?

It looks like next chapter we will learn something important about the island ship. I wonder what Brooke will reveal, and how it will alter the discussion of what will happen next. (by the way, I have a cousin who has a sword can for show. The handle is a pommel instead of a curved piece, but I have seen it.)

It´s pretty unlikely that these things on Brooks staff are strings. Just look at the two panels that come exactly before the the "string" panel and you see that Brook staff respectively sword-esque silhouettes in his hands which would not look like that if it would be strings.
Furthermore he´s been discribed as a swashbuckler by Hildon which pretty much makes him a swordsman. And on top of that a swashbuckler is a completely different kind of swordsman then Zoro is one who´s swordmanship follows more the lines of bushido.

Similar manner as in he uses a sword, I presume? Considering the fact that they're two swords appart pretty much garentee's that they will have different styles. That on top of the fact we've only seen one of his moves and have we even seen his sword in action.
At this point its like saying Franky's Exstended arm punches are too much like luffy's rubber's arms, so he can't be on the crew.

If Brook is a swordsman, every single cool swordfighting gimmick that he can do will be an impediment to Zoro's dream. How is he supposed to become the greatest swordsman in the world if one of his crewmembers has the same talent with swords as he does?
Because if Brook joins there's no way we aren't going to be comparing their moves, just like there will be no way to decide who is the stronger. As soon as Brook starts doing cool sword stuuf that Zoro can't, Zoro's dream will be over.

Also, Zoro's dream is to become the greatest swordsman. Brooke's dream will probably have to do with his music.

Sorry about the 3 posts in a row, but they are different. So, hey! OH MY GOSH! Thank you Oda, I just looked at the pics since I don't know Japanese. It began somewhat boring and then we saw a bit of fighting with Franky and Nico vs. Talleran. Still, not much to spark my interest. But, what's this? Brook, who now is locked on for having Ryuuma's shadow, takes out Talleran with Ryuuma's original 10 step move! I loved this chapter, definitely will keep me satisifed until after Goldenweek.
Just read the little translation too. Perona says to call the mysterious 3. Im assuming those are the 3 most powerful Zombie Generals. Just a wild guess, but I believe (I know Hogback isnt a general). Its something like this.
Either Ryuuma, Perona and Absalam. Or Hogback, Perona and Absalam. This number 900 will obviously be the most powerful of all the zombies and one of the strongest possibly, best next to Moria. -
zoro and brooke are two different types of sword users booke uses a light sword and zoro uses long blades/katanas.

Guys… How in hell would Brooke being a swordsman impede on Zoro's dream? Unless Brooke also shares the same dream, which I highly doubt, I don't see his using swords making much of a difference for Zoro. Besides it's Mihawk, not Brooke, that Zoro needs to beat in order to gain the title of 'best swordsman in the world'. Think of it also from this standpoint, if Brooke does join Zoro will possibly in turn get to have a sword-wielding sparing partner to help him refine his overall technique. Though he'd probably have to bribe the pervy skeleton with panties in order to get him to seriously spar..
Also I'm really banking towards the idea that Brooke is using a European style sword (Perhaps a rapier, longsword, etc.) as opposed to a katana or something similar. If that's the case his fighting style is also probably quite different from Zoro's, however we'll most likely have to wait for the next chapter to find out more about it.

This…is the best chapter in ages. Anyway, I just wanted to point out something that was lost in rok's translation (I don't mean to, brag, as my japanese is weak)
When nami says "I'm not fuking with you", in japanese it's "joudan ja nai wa yo", which his a trademark phrase of One Piece most famous okama...since she says it twice, and uses the feminine particle "wa" (which she didn't use before, since she was talking all masculine), I think it can't be a coincidence...
He rode back and forth, left and right, like a spider's legs, and ended with a somersault. Truly he was a match for a thousand.

I just noticed on the color spread that it looked like the gorilla and the tiger lost fights… but now the gorilla is wearing a "Franky" shirt and the tiger is wearing a "Luffy" shirt... I feel like there's so much more going on with that color spread. I hope to see it in the anime's opening eventually

You do realize the biggest revelation of the chapter, don't you?
The spider mice.
The fact that there are 500 spider mice with an insane amount of power to trap people in their webs finally explains how heavy hitters like zoro and sanji were so easily taken out of the picture. The little guys silently sprayed zoro and sanji with the web and stuffed them in a coffin. They are the real power in the thriller bark pirate trapping scheme and they even have a separate numbering system from the rest of the zombies starting with "S."

Even if I really, really liked the sword-cane thing, it only made me wish that Brook doesn't join.
If Brook is a swordsman, every single cool swordfighting gimmick that he can do will be an impediment to Zoro's dream. How is he supposed to become the greatest swordsman in the world if one of his crewmembers has the same talent with swords as he does?
Because if Brook joins there's no way we aren't going to be comparing their moves, just like there will be no way to decide who is the stronger. As soon as Brook starts doing cool sword stuuf that Zoro can't, Zoro's dream will be over.
Zoro's dream won't be over - Zoro doesn't need to master every single sword technique in the world to become the best swordsman in the world - he just needs to be better than everyone else.
Right now, I'm inclined to think that even if they're both swordsmen, Zoro is stronger than Brook. Brook's style seems to center on Iaido technique and musical technique, while Zoro's centers on multi-sword techniques (including some Iaido) and raw strength. Is it so wrong to have two swordsmen on the same ship!? Zoro can remain first mate and Brook can be the musician. I don't see how Brook's presence suddenly crushes Zoro's dream.
