About mascot characters, I really like Chuchu (from Utena) if it counts as one. Sorry, but I do.

I'm tired, but not stressed. Not anymore anyway.
This topic is just depressing. Oda comes in with his own ideas but stereotypical confirmist Japanese societal values force him into a corner he can't escape from. Same fudgin' theme for the recent generic ghost arc I haven't even bothered to read. ._.;
Because an animator drew a cute Chopper and they cast someone with a cute voice?
Japs chain Oda down and force him to draw a horror themed arc

Pretty much. If everyone does what Oda doesn't want, that puts a lot of pressure on him to conform, no?

Not quite what I meant. I haven't watched it but from all the bastiching in the occasional few posts you lot leak outside the manga forum and what I see on Yotsuba, it's a very formulaic, cliche-ridden arc in the spirit of Enies Lobby's finale and the return to W7.

I think you should read it before you make any sort of judgement.
So, does anyone else has any pics of OP ranbow other then the preview pics that crossbones posted over at KF?
Well, for the worse or for the better Terek, Thriller Bark has a few characters that could be pivotal to the story.

Everyone being two people? Plus, Chopper having a cute voice doesn't have anything to do with the design itself. The animation could have taken any course it wanted to ^_^;
Besides, Oda said he believes in making things 'cute' just not in the same way. Let's face it, before Chopper became a shape-shifting mashmallow he was still adorable because of all the reasons Oda wanted him to be.
He uses a word to describe it that I can't translate well but it's like Cinderella obeying her wicked step-mother despite her cruelty and moving ahead despite the hardships. He didn't use that example, but it's the same kind of feeling he was looking to create for Chopper and I think he succeeded on all fronts.
Think of it this way. He has the distinct honor of being the only SH whom instead of getting more square, has gotten more round.

Oh, I'm sure it's an important arc - all of them, including DBF and heck, even the Gaimon arc, are going to end up being important.

Well, I would imagine that Oda would have gotten some fan-mail praising the anime Chopper over his own, but I wouldn't say two people wouldn't have that much of an influence. My own parents can shame me into doing something I don't want to, afterall. :p
…
But, we digress. Anything else positively sweet in this rainbow sherbert?

There is nothing generic about Thriller Bark. Nothing.
It's probably Oda's most inventive arc yet, though I get the feeling that he's actually packed so much into what is intended to be a short arc that most of the things that he introduces won't really live up to their potential.
Wow, another interesting OP material book came out and the only subject of matter is some boring debate about manga/anime mascott´s.
Well it's just a logbook about the anime. There's probably not much else to discuss.

Yeah, there isn't much to discuss. Most of it is just put together really nicely and is an attractive addition to a fan's collection including pretty pictures of games, merchandise from the past etc.
Sorry I've been lax about spilling the goods but I'm coming off of Golden Week which I spent with my girlfriend and….basically didn't do shit in prep for the upcoming test season so I'm dying now.
There are some neat things in it but most amount to interviews with the staff of the anime and the VA's including a "What's your favorite scene" etc. Q&A for each one of them.
There is a neat feature which actually logs Nami's funds throughout the entire series. What pains me to no end is that this was not included in Yellow and is therefore....useless.
Ooooh, Q&A interviews from the anime staff?
Was there an answer that standed out from a good point of view you'd like to share [..please!]? =O
Yeah, I will. I just finished making reviews and exams yesterday. I'm looking at some quality lazy-ass time on my hands soon so I'll be back with stuff.
Is it too late to put in my two cents about Chopper?
It's clear from the beginning that Oda only very begrudgingly added Chopper as a character. He doesn't really fit in as cohesively as everyone else, and compared to the rest of the crew, his appearance seems kind of out-of-nowhere. Not to mention that he looks out-of-place in all the group shots back then, with the 5 Strawhats (+ Vivi) having about the same height and body type, and then there's this dumpy little marshmallow that comes up to their knees.
Contrary to what Oda's said, I think Chopper feels more in place as a character (as opposed to a mascot) now than he did when the series started. With Oda's developed style and the appearance of Franky, especially, Chopper's design no longer seems radically different from everyone else's. I always thought he was slightly out-of-place throughout Alabaster and much of Skypeia, but now in Thriller Bark, his part feels totally natural.

Hmmm, dunno if that was the intention. He wanted him in, just with an ugly snout ^O^
Hey, now. No need to insult Luna by calling her the mascot of her series.
@Fire Fist:
Come to think of it, most series have a sort of mascot that they use to promote the series. I can think of a few you didn't mention:
Bobobo: Dengaku-san
Trigun: Kuroneko-sama
Hellsing: Schrodinger
Bleach: Kon
DBZ: Karin, Kame-Sennin's turtle, among others
Dr. Slump: Gatchan
Gensomaden Saiyuki: Lirin, Goku
Rave Master/ Fairy Tail: Pluu
Yuyu Hakusho: Puu
In fact, it's harder to think of series that DON'T have mascots. It's something that Oda really shouldn't be so critical of.
I thought for DBZ it was Icarus?
Icarus was an anime only character.
And a handful of those he posted aren't even mascots…
Who the heck was Icarus?
Who the heck was Icarus?
I was wondering the same thing, tho it sounds familiar. I know it exsisted in the series.
(google searched) That baby dragon thing.
Who the heck was Icarus?
That retarded dragon thing that Gohan became friends with in the Garlic Jr. movie. Then the piece of shit shows up in the gay fag mcgay Garlic Jr. filler arc.
Hellsing: Schrodinger
HUH…..thats random
Ahhhh~. They called it Icarus? O_o
Was it called something else?
Haiyaa/Hire Dragon.
Hellsing: Schrodinger

He's a cat like kid that appears outta nowhere and can be killed infinitely and still come back. He can't fight (at all), and serves no purpose other than what seems to be comic relief.
not being in a fight in manga =/= not being able to fight.
heh
mascot my ass.
So are the pictures of the merchandise in this book real? I had no idea they were selling Galley-La t-shirts yet. (I feel so gullible that I even have to ask) Real or not, they look kind of cool, as opposed to those fairly lame Usopp shirts.
Small question:
I heard from many sources and read somewhere Sanji was 19..but Rainbow shows 20.. does that mean rainbow has a typo or what?and he's a knight( I hope I translated this right )
@aeque:Yep..that is real merchandise from what I can see

They're pretty old. They were sold in winter 2005
Ah, cool. Thanks for that.
