I first encountered anime on AXN and i believe it was Ghost Sweeper Mikami that got me hooked on anime.
Another i used to watch was Ninku.
That was a long time ago, i can't even count the number of anime i have gone through since

That's great…except this needs to be moved. Does so
As for me, my first anime was either Voltron, Robotech, or Speed Racer.
My childhood, I can't remember much from. But I believe my first anime was either Voltron or DBZ… Or maybe Battle of the Planets or something. Something like that.
I used to watch a lot of old "anime" as a kid like Astroboy, Speedracer, Voltron. I think perhaps Ghost in the Shell was the first thing I watched where I knew it was actually Japanese.
TMNT was considered anime?
I'm sure it was Voltron though I also saw G-Force and Speed Racer around the same time.
But I didn't know about anime until I saw the old DB dub.
Probably Astroboy or Speed Racer.
Battle of the Planets here. Loved the hell out of it. I remember some Robotech somewhere after that but not well. After that it was a long dry spell until Ninja Scroll showed up at my local Blockbuster.
Oops!, sorry about that, Zio. I must have started this topic without even checking the category
Whoa!!!, i too used to watch Speedracer and Voltron and those were some of my favourites back then, though they were in english.
Glad to know there are others who watched it too
I rented 'My Neigbor Totoro' when I was a kid, but I never realized it was anime until much later. Actually, I used to be big into video games. I started playing pokemon and liked it. The transaction from video game to anime was an easy one. xD Video Games to Pokemon to Digimon to Yugioh to One Piece. One Piece has been the best so far though. :3 (although I never really got over the ending of Digimon. All the other series were long and I got over them on my own time but digimon ended too soon for me. xD I'm over it now needless to say.)
TMNT was considered anime?
Definately not. 100% American.
Anyway….my first anime was The Fantastic Adventures of Unico by Osamu Tezuka. I used to rent that movie over and over again. ^_^
unico was also my first anime movie… i think i acutally watched it in the movie theater when it was out in japan (1983 maybe?). the movie was very scary, especially the part where all the people start turning into parts of the castle.
ooshi78
Hm, I don't remember people turning into parts of the castle. There's more than one movie. Do you remember if it was Unico: Kuroi Kumo Shiroi Hane or
Unico: Mahô no Shima he or just Unico, the one with the Baron DeGhost, the demon of solitude, and Chao the cat?
The first series that I watched (dubbed) were Robotech and Sailor Moon. However, the series that truly got me into anime was Slayers.
What can I say? I got into the habit a bit later than others.
i think i've seen two of them and they're kind of jumbled in my mind… i'm pretty sure it's this one

release date is 7/83 which puts it exactly at the time i was vacationing in japan. the wall behind the picture of the girl and unico is made up of people turned into stone (you can kind of tell). freaky stuff.

The first anime i watched was Kimba the white lion though it never occurred to me it was anime back then. :P Then i watched Akazukin Cha Cha and was wondering why it was so good (i had never seen a American Cartoon this good before was what i thought). I did a little researching on the Internet and discovered that it had a Genre to it. From that moment on i stopped watching all the cheesy American Cartoons and focused fully on Anime.
I was around 10 at that time.
when i was a kid, i watched dbz, city hunter, fly and saint seya
my official career of otaku began with evangelion
For me, probably Time Bokan and Astro Boy.

Slayers was the first anime that I actually bought. Prior to that I would only rent whatever showed up at Blockbuster. Slayers, though, I bought as soon as it came out. Its what got me started into fansubs too. When they didn't release the second half of Slayers for no apparent reason I bought the fansubs. Was well into Slayers Next fansubs before they finally released the rest of the first series (why were Software Sculptors so dumb?).
And Slayers got me hooked. Still my favorite series to this day.
DBZ was the first anime i so then Db then DBGT

you know fly too
and DBZ was my first anime and manga
My first experience with any anime at all was, like many others it seems, Voltron. However, that doesn't entirely count in my book, 'cause that wasn't a "Hey, that's anime!" sort of thing as much as it was, well, Voltron, and everyone was watching Voltron at the time.
My introduction to anime as anime, as it were, was back in middle school. My younger brother got up early every Saturday morning to watch the anime movies they had on the Sci-Fi channel, and one morning, he got me to watch along with him…it was either Dominion Tank Police or Project A-Ko, I don't remember which anymore. The point is, it was a lot of fun. Around the same time, another friend showed me some Ranma ½ manga he had. The rest is history...
It was Sailor Moon, mini skirts, hot women, yeah I watched that all throughout middle school and that led me to DBZ and then…blamo, gateway drug, but it was SM was my first
Sailor Moon (I think I was 7 at the time).
My first anime was probably Arare-chan (Dr. Slump), Dragonball and Peter Pan. I watched them when it was aired around 1986-89 i think… aaah... the old days... i think i'm gettin' old :(
Doraemon :) Though I didn't really understand it…
Dragon Ball Z…..
My first was probably Doraemon. Then probably Pokemon, followed by Sailormoon, and a little DBZ when I was in 5th grade.

Ah, no wonder I don't remember that, it's the one I haven't seen.
Ah, good old times. I think my first anime was that "Lil Castor" thing. I didn't know it was japanese until at the end when they show some japanese non-edited words (mostly "to be continued").
But I'm still not really sure it's an anime. Well, since they rent it at my anime store….I guess it is.
Makes me want to sing the theme song so bad.
I read Fly before Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball Z, I think...
Voltron was my first, I believe, but there's a bunch of 80s cartoons I think were anime that I loved…

errr…. when i was in grade 2 which was 5 years ago which i was 7 i watched
POKEMON!!
First manga: Gon.
First anime: Balatack.
Hehehe, seems everyone is having fun going down memory lane. Isn't it fun :D
I must confess i nevered watched much of DBZ or Sailormoon, only a couple of episodes. I did watch a few episode of Pokemon with my little bro but dropped out later on….
Doraemon was the first ever manga i read, and i loved it so much that i collected it till 44 I think. It still brings back lots of fond memorys along.
dammit, it's so loooooong ago, but i think it was the adaptation of 'little women' i saw at my friend's house. either that, or the helen keller story.
i really feel old now. boohoo.
my first anime was dbz, thats what started me to buy the dbz manga, then i bought sj, then i read like every series in viz's shonen jump. yea, but my i started with dbz when i was 7…............. i also watched digimon and pokemon.........but snow pokemon is gay(no offense to those who like), and digimon got bad after its 3rd season(again for those who like digimon : no offense)
I believe it was yuyu hakusho on toonami. I then started watching toonami and it sprung from there.
my first anime was prolly DB (maybe DBZ). First movie Ghost in the Shell. and the first anime serie i said "holly momma this is sweet!" was Cowboy Bebop, wich still is in my top5.
They made Peter Pan as an anime? Wow…
When I was about 3, I Saw Voltron and Speed Racer. Hell my dad found out only 3 years ago that that was an anime. But I thought they were just cartoons. What got me hooked in anime was Tenchi a few years later. The Tsunami/ Sasami episode or the one with the masses.
Grr...now I got Speed Racer in my head. "GO SPEED RACER GO!" Was the original Transformers an anime? You know G1?
Well… my first "anime" (That is, shows I actually recognized to be anime) would have to have been either Voltron (Lions) or Robotech (Macross).. It's a tough call though, because I'd religiously watch the both of them in '86.
Technically, however, I'd have to say Cities of Gold and Belle and Sebastian. All I knew was that they were neat cartoons, and I loved 'em. That was, like, '82 or '83, when I was very young (around 8 or so).
I'm not sure what my first "official" anime was, but I think it may have actually been Akira. I saw it in the theater when it came out here. I loved it so much.. until I read the manga x.x
Either voltron, astroboy, bob in the bottle or samurai pizza cats
Voltron, Battle of the Planets, and Speed Racer

You just reminded me of Samurai Pizza Cats. It wasn't my first show, but I used to wake up at 5am just to watch that. I was so addicted to the awful english opening song
Mine was DBZ. Back when it was done in Canada.
The first anime I watch was Tranzor Z the dubbed Mazinger Z. I never knew what anime was back them.
my anime experience went from Pokemon to Digimon to DBZ to Yu-Gi-Oh to Yu-Yu-hakusho to One Piece!
If I can remember enough, I'm pretty sure the first anime that I watched was DBZ. That and Digimon somewhat got me hooked on anime, but I started fully watching anime all the time after watching Akira when I was 9 or 10.
A lot of people choose akira as one of their first here, kinda brings back my first time too.
Akira was actually my first anime movie i ever watched, i believe it was shown on AXN, followed by Ghost In A Shell.

Yup, that's right, but you forgot Fatal Fury.
Hmm… so long ago... I think my first anime experience was Voltron. The first anime movie I saw was Project A-ko (still a fav!). But my first anime obsession was Giant Robo. I love the story, the characters (Ginrei is a goddess! XD ), and especially the retro character designs.
