I searched and didn't find a topic like this. Mainly the point is to recommend movies that you have recently seen or have seen which aren't blockbuster well known movies, or at least aren't now.
I recommend The Ninth Gate starring Johnny Depp. I just finished watching it on IFC. It seemed interesting from the start but as it got along it got well….meh, and the ending was just "huh?". However it is a good movie if you just wanna sit down and watch a movie nonetheless.
The Ninth Gate was amusing, but yeah after a certain part it goes "WTF?" Who the hell was that girl, anyway? Some kind of angel/demon?
As for the B-movie fans, I recommend the old version of The Fog, as well as Creepshow.
Oh, forgot to mention Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story. I watched it last night and quite enjoyed it.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. One of the best psychological thrillers out there. And it prooves that Jim Carrey can do drama.
I recommend Shaun of the Dead, for those of you that haven't seen it. It is truly wonderful, and very funny! That's the last movie I've watched so I thought it was worth mentioning…
Also if you feel like watching something fun and gorey, go see Grindhouse, it is amazing! And the fake trailers are freaking hilarious as well!
Ooh and 300, I highly recommend that movie! The cinematography is just beautiful, the entire movie is just...wow. Not really a dull moment in that movie.

I think that part where the main character was stupid (if we are thinking about the same scene), fit in well, I mean, characters in fairy tales do often stupid stuff like that. And it was so stupid it wasn't just her curiosity or anything. But I won't start to analyze the movie here.
Just go and see it yourself.
I think we think of the same. And while you're right, of course, fairy tales have the advantage of not being so graphic…when showing the consequences. Come to think of it,that whole scene had me scared more than most horror flicks I've ever seen, I guess that added to my reaction.

Actually, I thought that this was for films that you like that you think that other people should watch because they might like it as well. But on that note, I'm kind of wary of posting any film titles here because recommending films really only works and works well with some kind of context; otherwise you would just be listing out your favourite stuff to watch which to me isn't quite the same as giving out a good, that is more specific, rec-list. That's especially true when the movies that do get 'recced' are like, so super common that probably everyone and their brother has already seen it.
To that end…sorry, pirateneko, I really respect you and your tastes and stuff – both Shaun of the Dead and Metalocalypse = YESYESYES! – but I'm hard pressed to see the point of recommending something like 300. Granted, I haven't seen it but that's only because I'm going out of my way to avoid it and I'm probably like, one of ten people in the universe who hasn't seen it yet. I dunno, but it just strikes me as kinda sorta pointless, like recommending the Lord of the Rings films or Star Wars. Everyone who wants to see those films probably already has, you know? They're just that commonplace.
Seriously though, if someone could post some genres or whatever that they would like recommendations for then I'd probably be more inclined to list out some titles and stuff. Otherwise, I feel as if I'd just be listing stuff out that will possibly be of interest to no one, which is very possible considering some of the stuff that I watch. But maybe that's just me being cynical again?

Star Wreck is borderline okey - I even made a thread for it - but you need to have little obscure taste to enjoy it. The next movie those guys are going to make might not be available for free but instead it will be featured in theaters. But of course, if they are still cool, they will make it available for free again.
Hey, just to tease Mavado I could list few Swedish movies! Nobody hasn't heard about those anyway :devil: –> Fucking Åmål was pretty cool. It's about two lesbian girls. Lilja 4-ever is by the same director and it's a very powerful movie about human trafficing. After you have seen that movie you really need to see a good comedy so lets say Jalla! Jalla!.
I've actually seen both Fucking Åmål and Lilja 4-ever, but not Jalla! Jalla! To be honest, while I respect Fucking Åmål, which was re-named "Show Me Love" in the US, I didn't particularly like it enough to buy it, and I thought that Lilja 4-ever was manufactured to be depressing almost to the point of gratuitousness. When it comes to Lukas Moodysson, I much prefer Tillsammans, or "Together" as it is better known in the States.

Well, my knowledge about Swedish cimena is even more limited. But now that Gr4zy entered the kids section 
I can recommend one more Swedish title: Pippi Longstocking (or whatever it is in English).
I recommend "Safety Last!" starring Harold Lloyd. I just saw this movie this morning on Turner Classic Movie (apparently cause today is his 114th birthday; no, he isn't alive). I never really watched silent films before, but this movie, along with "Number, Please!" on before it were great.
Wouldn't think I'd like silent films but these were really fun to watch, I dare say they are more entertaining than full colored, talking movies.
I think that my favourite film from the silent era is probably Häxan, which is a Danish pseudo-documentary from 1922. It's such a bizarre little film; it isn't really a documentary but it isn't really a movie either, being a blend of both, and the imagery is nothing short of amazing considering the film's age. The themes and sequences of the film itself are also shocking given the time that it was made, and it has by far one of the best orchestral scores I've ever been fortunate enough to listen to. I think that it's definitely worth a watch, though I wouldn't really recommend it to everyone because it is so different.

Disturbia. Just out in theaters and it's great.
At first, it looks like a bassic Rear Window rip-off, but it's got heart. But the one thing that seperates this from other horror films, is that it actually tries to scare you. Unlike most horror films nowadays, it understands that excessive gore does not equal horror. Plus, there's a build up to the actual horror, and the characters are a lot more developed than they may appear to be in the commercials. In a world full of such horror films as Saw III and The Hills Have Eyes 2, it's nice to know that there's at least one horror movie that actually understands horror.
Iron Giant- If you like the Incredibles, you'd definentally like this one. One of the more serious cartoons of the day.

Oh, that was my favorite cartoon movie when I was 11! It also made me to get interest on the industry cinema of the 50's.

The Changeling: a pretty scary movie about a musician (George C. Scott) who moves to a new house after his wife and daughter getting killed in an accident. Suddenly, he is started to be haunted by the ghost of a little boy. The movie evolutes from a ghost story to a politician-conspiracy thriller. Very interesting.
Dr. Strangelove: a brilliant satire about the Cold War Era, where a crazy general orders to launch bombs in URSS land, claiming that the communists began an invasion in USA. What he doesn't little know is that the URSS government installed a system of nuclear destruction in case of their lands being hit by something warmful… like a bomb.
Bean the Movie- Rowan Atkinson is hysterical in this movie version of the English television series.
Fargo- An unusual movie, but that doesn't make it any less awesome. A dramatic movie which is funny at times, and even provides a look into human nature.

Both are great and classic movies in my opinion.
I reccomend both Underworld series (Underworld and Underworld Evolution). But I reccomend you guys tried to find the Extended edition of Underworld. But anyway both movies are great Fantasy/Action movies in my opinion. And plus you see Kate Beckinsale in tight leather outfits. ^_^.
Kung Fu Hustle - my favorite martial arts movie of all time. It's from Stephen "Shaolin Soccer" Chow, and it's equal parts awesome fight scenes, ridiculous cartoony action scenes, and off-the-wall cultural references. Any Hong Kong martial arts film that references both The Blues Brothers and the Roadrunner cartoons is a movie after my own heart.
Because there's nothing specific here to latch on to, I'll go ahead and post two recommendations each for a handful of different genres. Some are considered enduring classics, others are just some films that tickle me, and all are worth watching at least once in my opinion. I'm not going to bother going into detail on any of them unless someone asks, because that would really take a lot of time given how many films I'm listing.
Of course, these films are only the barest tip of the cinematic iceberg; there are hundreds of rec-worthy films out there, it only one would just take the time to look.

Ooh, I remember two movies which demand remommendations:
Zardoz. A scifi with half naked Sean Connery. The first time I saw it I hated it. The second time I saw it I loved it. Fail Safe (TV). Cold War drama performed and broadcasted live. It was a very intense watching experience.
Oscar- Released in 1991 staring Silverster Stallone. Pretty funny comedy. Rent it first and if u love it, purchase it.
Treasure Planet. The 2002 animated Disney film.
I was hoping it'd be good and half way through I was still hoping and I was quite pleased with the movie.
Ong Bak and the Protector with Tony Jaa on it. They're all Muay Thai karate wakapopo something.
Hound of the Baskervilles (Comedy, Spoof 1978)
Starring the late great Peter Cook and Dudley Moore Far from you're usual Holmes and Watson mystery. Moore and Cook are hilarious in this mystery spoof based on the Sherlock Holmes novel of the same name. Funny from Moore's walking in with his fly down to start the piano for the opening credits, the house with a flooded attic, to the running gag about the dogs with weak bladders. A rare comedy gem.
White Knights (Drama, Dance 1985)
Starring Mikhail Baryshinikov and Gregory Hines
First I want to say that I hate dance movies (yes i've seen several against my will, understood them and still hated them) But this is nothing remotely like them I honestly cant put it into words this is just an excellent movie. Grace and elegance(Mikhail) meets rhythm and beat(Hines). Seriously check it out.
Wizards (Animated 1977)
This film was an experiment in a very unique style of animation. If you're a graphic-whore then just ignore this, if you want an entertaining story with a fresh and artistic style watch it.

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (Dark Comedy, Crime 1999)
Guy Ritchie's movie before Snatch and honestly I like this one better. From the choreography in the poker game to the various botched robberies and the cause and effect style of story telling Guy Ritchie is famous for. A classic.

Bump. Army of fucking Darkness! I saw this movie a few weeks ago and fell in love with it, I saw it after years of being told how awesome the Ash character and Bruce Campbell in a whole were. I however am not good with horror and hearing it was the third film of a horror franchise I stayed away.
But upon hearing more things I decided to see it. Upon not even seeing the first two films, I enjoyed it immensely and it's slowly becoming one of my favorite movies. I can't find it to buy anywhere tho, which ticks me off cause I remember my local Wal-Mart having it months ago.
Upon loving it so much, it finally gave me the guts to see Evil Dead 2 (also recommended if you don't mind a few jump out scares and some suspense. Oh, and gallons upon gallons of blood, but who doesn't love that?), and now I'm trying to get the guts to see The Evil Dead.
Recommended, Recommended, RECOMMENDED.

Hunt for Red October is good. Stars Sean Conerry, James Earl Jones, Scot Glenn, and Alec Baldwin. Sean Conerry is a Russian defect commanding a sub. All I will say.
Masters of the Universe. The He Man movie. Very bad, but Meg Foster as Evil Lyn and Frank Langella as Skeletor work well. Plus the score is among my favorites.

Anybody looking for a hilariously odd movie should definitely look into Time Bandits. It is a relatively obscure title that most people here probably haven't heard of, but it's seriously awesome. It's about a group of midgets that work for Father Time or God or something that steal a treasure map and travel all around time, stealing things as they go, with the help of a young 7-or-so-year-old boy who is about the same height as them. That's probably not even an appropriate synopsis, because I can't even really remember what the plot was: this movie was that trippy. It stars some relatively famous actors and comedians such as John Cleese and Michael Palin, although most are in bit roles.
The movie is so strange, but so good. If you ever see it on TV, make sure you take the time to watch it. Another similarly odd movie is Yellowbeard, a hilariously and inexplicable raunchy pirate movie starring Graham Chapman and Cheech and Chong, which most certainly also deserves your attention.
Oh. Grandma's Boy is another good one. It's about game testers. Funny as hell.
Last Action Hero is another one. Ridiculous Arnold movie. Just crazy.
Then there is Surf Ninjas. Hilariously bad movie about a kid and his Surf Ninjas game.
Since I'm listening to it at the moment, I highly recommend Hairspray. It is such a fun movie, and it is so funny! The music is just great too, really fun to listen to~
Also, I watched this movie called Stay, it has Ewan McGregor in it. It was quite amazing actually… the camera work was just beautifully done, and the soundtrack is awesome (yay Damien Rice!)

If you want very good movies too watch see Schindlers List- its pretty awesome and beautiful (directed by Spielberg, which also did a dozen other great movies). Thats the drama I recommend.
For Comedy I recommend Singin' in the rain, which is actually more musical then comedy, but I want to recommend Moulin Rouge for Musical because it was very good.
For thriller/horror I would say Excorcist, but probably many of you saw it already.
For foreign, you should really watch Life is beautiful, which is a comedy drama war during the holocaust, Seven Samurai because the action scenes are great (especially for such an old movie), and seventh seal because it was weird but pretty good
