So Mato, what say we find some more questions for you to give us info on, eh?
Episode titles, direct translation or a slimmed down version?

Mato-senpai, I was wondering whether or not your subs will contain translations of signs or cultural notes 'cause as we all know sometimes the writing will include stuff us 'Mericans no naught of.
Keep on translating,
YBM (Reporter for toonzone.net) -
In order to keep the FAQ thread on topic, which is meant to deal entirely with the subtitled release only, please discuss your predictions and eventually all related dub discussion in this thread.
-
How long do we have until that Anime Expo (probably a frequently asked question).
-
When will it premier?
-
@raj: August, it'll air in CN.
-
So no date confirmed as of yet?
-
The subject of translation notes has been covered a couple times. The short answer is "probably not".
-
Nope, no exact confirmation date. But I'm sure we'll get it in a month or so.
-
So in about a month, we should be getting info on voice actors and maybe Toonami promos. That will be sweet. I think Funimation might make their own openings (they usually do). I hope the make it as good as their programs that air on Adultswim.
-
j.a.m. Funi hasn't released info on Voice actors yet? how long are they gonna wait to get them?
-

Ah, dang it.
Mato-senpai, surely you have some leaverage?
-
With how much focus they're putting on getting the perfect voices (according to them), I wouldn't be suprised if it's taken them longer to cast this series than most shows they do.
After all, they have to restore the series' credibility to the general public after 4Kids made it look like some wacky kid's show.

Pretty much, that might happen.

I'm pretty sure the restored orchestral serious background music instead of that fucking dickshitting kiddy crap BGM as well as the unedited guns and "Kill" refferences could make up for it.

Yo
@EvilGamerX:
So Mato, if you are actually reading this shit-hole of a thread still, a random question to get things rolling again.
Are there gonna be Next Time segments on the DVDs? I know they are left out for DB and DBZ. Have you had to translate any. I assume there will be.
I'm sorry if it has been answered, too much shit to go through for me to care to look (I think you did mention it, I just wanted to nudge the topic back in order a little).Almost certain they will. It was kinda sucky how they dropped the ball for DB/DBZ, but OP has the previews. Aside from some crazy Toei guy specifically asking them not to be included, I'd expect them to be there.
So Mato, what say we find some more questions for you to give us info on, eh?
Episode titles, direct translation or a slimmed down version? For subs or dub? For subs we're translating them directly. For the dub, I dunno.
@Yuugi's:

YBM (Reporter for toonzone.net)Senpai  I don't think I've really ever been called that. I'm just some nerdy guy
Anyway, for signs and text, I usually translate stuff out that's important to the viewer to know. They're done using soft-subs though, meaning we can't be all fancy and edit the video directly like fansubs tend to do. Plus if we hard-edited the video, people would throw nukes at us By "important" I usually mean things that the viewer needs to know to enjoy the story, things like letters, important signs, writing, etc. If there's tiny shops in the background that have nothing to do with anything, I usually leave it alone.
If you're talking about the dub, that'll probably use alternate angles on the DVD to show video text in English.
BTW are you really a reporter for toonzone? If so, that's awesome.
-
Will there be anything at Comic Con?
-
Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this yet, but I dont think that beer and such would be edited out by funimation (since they said it mostly depended on Cartoon Network's guidelines). Because I remember quite well a while back when Justice League Unlimited was on, there were a couple of instances of characters drinking alcohol.
I seem to always be late with big news like this, buuuuuuut, applauds Funimation for taking back One Piece. Now my brother-in-law can actually see One Piece in a better light(I used to brag about One Piece to him, but he has been a naruto-fan and one-piece basher without even seeing the originals of both). Rather than the lame jokes that 4kids brought upon it
-
Hey Mato, does your list say anything about the Gorosei? Will it be translated out to Five Elder Stars, or something else to that effect?
-
I'm up for talking more about the possible Voice Actors. Maybe someone we haven't talked about non-stop coughMignognacough.
Ok… anyone got a suggestion for Nami? How about Gedatsu? I haven't started looking yet, but I will. Anyone got anything already?
-
Will there be anything at Comic Con?
Not much I wouldn't think. The Funi panel is usually just a long commercial for upcoming stuff. I doubt there will be much for detailed info.
-
…people are complaining that FUNimation is taking their time to get the right voice actors cause they are impatient for new information?
Wow.
-
Well I got a couple guesses about Nami and Robin. For Nami, I'm thinking it should be ether Collin Clickenbeard with her Ecliar voice or someone new. For Robin, I'm having high hopes for Laura Bailey to voice her. And I think Laura can do Robin prefectly in my opinion.
-
They're gonna use the same 20 or so people they always use!
Der!

…Who's complaining...?!
I think you're a little gun shy from the FAQ thread...

Considering some of the voices and how they don't fit very well but they still use the character, I'd say that the guy who seems to do a lot of their lead characters(like Yuske from Yu Yu Hakusho) is a fit for Luffy and will probably get the job, even though there are definitely waaay better candidates out there.
I hope they don't use him or I'll always think "Spirit Gun!!!" every time he talks. >.>
-

It better be.
No "Five ol' farts" or some crap.
-
If FUNimation's being held to cigarette rules at a later timeslot, while Naruto ISN'T at an earlier timeslot than that…then I wouldn't be too surprised if they'd still be forced to edit out the alcohol :/

Ummmmm, huh?
Yusuke is the only leading role Justin Cook's ever had. How exactly do you go from "one lead character" to "a lot of their lead characters"?

I had posted 4 videos on my voice actor suggestions.
Hope you like my choices.
Part 1 (Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp)
Part 2 (Sanji, Chopper, Robin, Franky)
Part 3: The Villains (Enel, Spandam, Rob Lucci, Kalifa, Kaku, Blueno)
Part 4: Other Characters (Vivi, Ace, Smoker, Shanks)

Well I think in the case of the cigaretts on Naruto, Asuma doesnt really appear too often on the show, so his few instances of smoking can probly let slide. One Piece, however, has a main character who smokes 24/7, and the people down at CN HQ dont want that much smoking on their show. I guess the same can be said for Smoker, as for a good few episodes he was there a LOT.
Alcohol can be like the equivalent of Asuma's smoking. Its there, but isnt an often occurance. Plus, they can get by with keeping it its regular color and leaving out phrases like "I could sure use a beer". They could use "I could sure use a drink".
Again, that is just my input on it :P. -
^That has already been addressed. For the record, Sanji's smoking isn't constant throughout the series. CN just gives Naruto special treatment because it's Naruto.
I think the alcohol will most likely never be called alcohol they way u mentioned. "I'll have some grog/rum!" or "gimme a drink bartender!" Is the most likely choice.

Oh man, I'd love the dub if they gave Luffy the Yusuke voice even though I can't see it happening.
-
hope this dub does not have so many puns in it
-
@raj:

I honestly see Justin Cook (Yusuke) as more of a Sanji guy.
-
Honestly, it would be more for laughs then anything else when I said that. Just like giving Sanji Kuwabara's voice.
-
It's already been promised that there won't be any puns except the ones Oda-Sensei originally made^^ Anyway, I've been reading the manga and there is quite a bit of stuff that FUNimation is gonna have to explain. Like when Luffy and the guys were on the sea train and Luffy saw the frog and said Kaeru which is a double pun. Wonder how FUNimation is gonna handle it. And I really wanna know hoe they'll handle the Nami undressing and redressing in the Sea Train in front of everyone. It's gotta be one of the most priceless scenes in One Piece!^^
-
i'd like to see spike spencer usopp
mona marshal as luffy
crispin freeman as zoro
kate higgins for nami -
They'll probably just have Luffy say something like "Turn back! There's a giant frog on the tracks." or something.
-

Yes, I am a reporter for TZ (can I get and interview? )
Well, I 'spose I understand it, it's a real hassle to do that extra stuff. On the DBZ movie twelve DVD I noticed how there was a 'signs' track because the sign for Blood Lake was translated and all.
Blah, not going to press the subject.
Keep on translating,
YBM (reporter or toonzone.net)EDIT: I called you senpai 'cause…
わたし は にほんご いきます!
-
I'd actually like the guy who did Edward (Full metal Alchemist) to do both Luffy and Usopp, just differently in slight terms with each character.
-
That's cool, I never knew. I've always kept up with TZ for the last 3 or 4 years or so. As for an interview, that'd be cool, but I'd only be able to talk about stuff from my side of things, I wouldn't be able to talk as a representative of FUNi, if that makes sense. Kind of like what I'm doing now. But it might be best to save it for a few months, pretty crazy busy with work as it is
I'm not really sure what you're getting at about the signs and stuff. Is there something wrong with soft-subbing signs, etc. when necessary for the subtitle track? From what I've seen with other companies' DVDs, that seems to be pretty standard.
-
Hey Mato, does your list say anything about the Gorosei? Will it be translated out to Five Elder Stars, or something else to that effect?
Right now for the subs we have Five Elder Stars, but it might be possible to keep Gorosei. But I haven't heard anything back yet so for now the subs (and I assume dub) use Five Elder Stars.
-
I'm just hoping that all of the jokes/puns that only make sense if left in Japanese will still be there somehow for at least the subs. Translating it out directly and then not saying anything about the double meaning isn't keeping the joke.
-

Forgive me, I don't think I was reading your post that well (the TV was on) now that I reread your post just ignore what I was saying.
EDIT: Also, I was being playful when I did the interview thing but maybe if in a few months you'd like to…and if I can get permission...we can congregate.

For a series as long as One Piece and for two main characters….Vic is only human, cut him some slack.
-
I've said it before: wonderful as Crispin Freeman is, he's just not right for Zoro. Lucci maybe, Smoker, Enel, all of them he could do, but he's just too sophisticated for Zoro, who I see as a simple lad, really.
I was a little disappointed when I heard that Funimation wsas planning to give the main characters no regional accents at all, presumeably due to the 'nasal bronx sanji' deal. I don't think I could be satisfied if every strawhat had the same vaguely homogenous American accent.
I mean, as far as I'm concerned Sanji is by rights a New Orleans man (think Gambit from x-men)- I mean, the speaking French, the cooking seafood, the old-fashioned manners…does anybody else see that?but yeah, I'm still very interested in seeing this thing when it comes out...
