He was one of my favorite authors
Kurt Vonnegut died.
-
-
Don't think I have ever heard of him before now, Still sad all the same.
Rest in Peace.
-
Nooooo!
Mine too.
Rest in peace. -
Damn, my cousin & I were just talking about Kurt Vonnegut this past sunday at Easter Dinner… coincidence?
-
i don't like these RIP threads.
-
Then don't read them, igalfsy. :getlost:
I've read some of his work. Truely brilliant.
-
I never heard of him, but as a comic author then I bow to him. May he rest in peace.

i don't like these RIP threads.
The thing I hate about them are posts like "Well I've never heard of this guy before but I'll give my generic pity anyway. RIP!!!" It's just so…. dumb and fake. Like there's some kind of rule about compulsory condolences that I never heard of.
Kurt Vonnegut was pretty much my literary hero, so this was really sad news for me.

I think you're confusing Kurt Vonnegut with Johnny Hart, the creator of B.C., who also died a few days ago.

Don't know who that is either. I seemed to have read the page that was linked wrong.
-
Damn man I love Slaughterhouse 5. Everybody here should give that book a read as a tribute to this great author. Truly sad.
RIP Kurt Vonnegut
-
Heard about this earlier.
So it goes.
-
Was he the guy who wrote "Player Piano"? If so, he was pretty amazing.
-
Vonnegut makes Ann Rynd read like L. Ron Hubbard.

If someone dies and you don't know who it is, either don't say anything, or at least look up information about who you're giving your generic sympathy to.

Thanks for that honeybunny
-
Wow, that blows. I loved Slaughterhouse Five and one of my literature savvy friend is constantly pestering me to check more of his work out. RIP.
-
Can't really say I knew anything about him prior to his death, but I wish I did… He sounds like he was a really cool guy.
I'll definitely be checking out some of his works, at least.
Is there anything in particular that would be good to start with? -
Slaughterhouse Five is his most well known and a good way to get introduced to his style.
If you like that, I HEAVILY recommend Bluebeard. Breakfast of Champions is great too.

I imagine the best reply to a thread like this, where you don't know the person, would be to say something like, "I'm sorry for your loss." or something similar.
I never knew him, but this and a few other threads have gotten me interested in his works.
-
It feels ironic, as our Literature class began reading Slaughterhouse 5 earlier this week. Quite a few people (including the teacher) seemed rather distressed by the news, and I can see why now as he was quite an amazing writer.
So it goes.

Would you rather me come in here and be a total insulting jerk to the dead instead of posting a generic sympathy? Cause I make a habit to post, so more than likely I'm gonna post in them.
-
Did you actually just say that you have an inexplicable urge to post in every thread you see? That's kind of fanatical if I'm reading it right.
Besides, it's not like I said that people shouldn't post generic sympathy at all. I just said to get a clue who you're honoring out of respect.

Well uh, if you don't have something to say, then don't say anything. Seriously. Are you trying to boost your non-existent post count?
Anyway. I read Cat's Cradle a little while ago and really enjoyed it; such a shame I didn't know about his works sooner. RIP Kurt.

Why would I need to? It's not like post count tells how big your penis is or somethin'.
I just wanted to post, okay? Roz can just back off and stop criticizing me cause I posted in a topic I really don't belong in. It'll cause a lot of less fuss that way.

Because Generic Sympathy just because you have a bad habit of posting everywhere is alright am I right.
-
That's kind of depressing when you feel you have an obligation to post in every thread, no matter the content of your posts.
-
Look, I suggest you get off my case of posting and get back to talking about the topic at hand. There really was no need to reply to my post and make this little mess.
When someone is talking to you, even someone you may not even know but are just chatting with, and they talk about someone dear to them who has passed away. What do you usually say? "I'm so sorry." or the like, when you don't even know who the person was or in some cases who the person who you're saying you're sorry to is. Yet you still do, cause you are sorry the living has passed on.
So if I wanna post "R.I.P." for the dead, I will for it is my right.
