The thing I hate about them are posts like "Well I've never heard of this guy before but I'll give my generic pity anyway. RIP!!!" It's just so…. dumb and fake. Like there's some kind of rule about compulsory condolences that I never heard of.
Kurt Vonnegut was pretty much my literary hero, so this was really sad news for me.

I think you're confusing Kurt Vonnegut with Johnny Hart, the creator of B.C., who also died a few days ago.

Damn man I love Slaughterhouse 5. Everybody here should give that book a read as a tribute to this great author. Truly sad.

Can't really say I knew anything about him prior to his death, but I wish I did… He sounds like he was a really cool guy.
I'll definitely be checking out some of his works, at least.
Is there anything in particular that would be good to start with? -
Slaughterhouse Five is his most well known and a good way to get introduced to his style.
If you like that, I HEAVILY recommend Bluebeard. Breakfast of Champions is great too.

I imagine the best reply to a thread like this, where you don't know the person, would be to say something like, "I'm sorry for your loss." or something similar.
I never knew him, but this and a few other threads have gotten me interested in his works.

It feels ironic, as our Literature class began reading Slaughterhouse 5 earlier this week. Quite a few people (including the teacher) seemed rather distressed by the news, and I can see why now as he was quite an amazing writer.

Look, I suggest you get off my case of posting and get back to talking about the topic at hand. There really was no need to reply to my post and make this little mess.
When someone is talking to you, even someone you may not even know but are just chatting with, and they talk about someone dear to them who has passed away. What do you usually say? "I'm so sorry." or the like, when you don't even know who the person was or in some cases who the person who you're saying you're sorry to is. Yet you still do, cause you are sorry the living has passed on.
So if I wanna post "R.I.P." for the dead, I will for it is my right.
