Since no one has made a thread for this (atleast I don't see any), I'll make it. ^^

This Thread is to talk about Battle Royale Manga, Movies, and plans for the Battle Royale Remake by New Line Cinema's

And, I expect there to be lots of spoilers so use the spoiler tags aswell.

OK. So, anyone seen this movie? I got into the movie about 2 months ago, though it's like 7 years old now, it's a classic. ^^ I even got the DVD box set a few days ago.

My favourite people in the first movie are probably the hacker dudes. (can't remember there names) and in the second one, it's the guy with the huge punk hair, and Kasai Osamu, of course. ^^

Though, the 2nd one had lots of action, I don't think it was as good as the first.

Now, let's discuss. ;D

I just started to read the manga. I only bought volume 1, but at AX I plan to get all of it. It was pretty damn good~

I really don't think the manga did the book justice, BUT it was still goddamned good. I still would take the book over everything else.

The manga was better if you could ignore the weird art style.
Though the book was still best, I still think the manga really improved on certain parts.
Better Sugimura/Kotohiki part, better death for Yoshitoki, best ending.

Only REAL problem was the American adaption of it. Good god. "Fuck a duck"? Who HIRED that dumbfuck?

Movie was annoying as hell. The kids were so useless it was a pain to watch. Too much crying and not enough killing. Kids these days… completely helpless.

Except for Niida and Oda (that feels horrible coming from a One Piece forum).
Even Mitsuko and Kiriyama are poor deranged folks.:sad:

I didn't really like Oda or Mitsuko.
Too bad Nobu didn't last to long, he could've gone kinda far .. kinda.

I watched the movie the other week, it was amazing. New Line says they're going to be faithful to the original book, but we'll see how that turns out. Also, I suspect the reason New Line is making their own version is that Toei wants too frickin much to distribute the movies over here.

Way to fail again, Toei.

Three year thread resurrection!

I just recently read that manga and thought it was really good. Unique idea, decent characters, plots and counterplots, some cool scenes, oh and violence. Good stuff.

Anybody else like Battle Royale? And can I get some opinions on the movie? Should I watch it?

You should read the book. But yeah, I thought the movie was pretty good. It was kind of abbreviated as should be expected from a movie adapted from a book but I think it did a pretty good job. I've actually read a little bit of the manga and couldn't stand it.

I usually hear it like this:

novel>manga>film

I haven't read the novel or watched the film but the film can't possibly cover so many characters in such a short period of time.

The manga is very gory, but gets the horror feeling across quite nicely. The english translation is….... sometimes, awful. And wrong. They said it was a live action television show, and it wasn't, leaving me confused at how "certain events happened".

you can find it online and read it. Decide if it's worth your money after reading a few chapters.

Though, Battle Royale is nothing I'd want in my house. lol

I haven't read the book, so I can't offer an opinion as to how the manga/film stacks up to that, but personally I found the manga to be very good, and movie less so.

The manga is well-drawn and very explicit, with no qualms whatsoever about depicting graphic scenes of violence and gore. There were quite a few times where my mind cringed at certain panels and I wished that I hadn't seen whatever was being displayed on the page at the time (which isn't necessarily a bad thing for a seinen series and is a testament to Taguchi's skill as an artist, I think). Story-wise, I enjoyed how the reader was given insight into almost every participant's background, which made it easier to sympathize with their struggles; even some of the cruelest and most dangerous participants (Mitsuko, Kiriyama) proved to be ultimately tragic characters once their pasts were revealed. Overall, I thought that the detailed art style in combination with the well-paced plot, made for a pretty enthralling and emotional read. I'd say it's definitely worth your time to check it out, but I have to say I'm not certain if it would be something the average fan would care to reread time and again due to its rather intense nature. It would depend on the reader, I think.

I saw the movie after I read the manga and although it had some good action scenes, the story and character portrayal left much to be desired, in my opinion. It just didn't have the same depth and emotional impact that I found in the manga, so I'd definitely place it below the volumes in terms of enjoyment.

Just saw the movie.

The manga is far superior. Like Dervish was saying, one of the best parts about the manga is learning the backstories behind the characters. The movie just doesn't have time to cover this stuff. I'd imagine the novel is pretty good depending on how good the writing is; it would be really hard to mess up such an enthralling story.

Also the best part of the manga is the Kiriyama/Sugimura fight, and it isn't in the movie :(

I read the manga a few years back, and really enjoyed it. I never bothered ith the movie, but I had looked around for a copy of the book, and I guess I eventually forgot about it until I saw this thread!
I guess I'll go ahead and order it online so I can read it.
