@bunshindattebayo:
Btw, anyone here kinda disappointed with the Super TTGL design?
Yeah, for me it was sort of like beating a not quite dead horse until its brains were smeared across the pavement.
Throughout this month, we will be testing new features (like search) so you may experience some hiccups from time to time. We'll try to not be too disruptive...

mY ONLY complaint with Chou Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is it's name.
It looked badass but the name was like an after though =/
…but come on a giant Kamina made up of energy with his signature glasses and a cape? Too badass.
Movie 2- WHY DID THEY CUT DOWN THE BATTLE AGAINST LORDGENOME FOR?!!? FUCK'S SAKE YOU HAD ENOUGH TIME TO SHOW THE MECHA FIGHT AND YOU CUT IT THE FUCK DOWN?!
This, this, and this. After the foreboding end of the first movie with Lord Genome and the Lazengan, that felt so, so cheap. They really should've rewritten the first forty-five minutes or so of the first movie to condense the events to improve the pacing so that they could've ended it cleanly with the group beating Genome.
Aside from that, I liked the second movie much more than the first, since they actually added and changed some stuff. Though I will admit that I did like some of the performances in the TV series more, and playing triumphant music over the end of the epilogue instead of the quieter piece from the TV series just didn't feel right. And to be honest, the bout of fisticuffs at the end did nothing for me, since the fanfare had finished at that point, and it felt like it was there just for the sake of trying to look cool then really adding anything to the scene.
I thought this series was all about coolness. I mean come on "WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM?!"
…and I'm always up for fisticuffs/fights.
I blame it on taking place after the original climax, thus feeling like an unneeded extension to me.
The movies are gonna be released in the US in July but sub only

Oh good, at least I can add to my sub collection of the series.
I've only seen a few episodes of the dub and it was pretty good. How as the second half handled though? I was planning on buying the entire dub eventually, since I have the subbed DVDs.

It was just as good. I liked the dub more than the sub.
I'll try to buy the DVDS.

Thanks for the feedback.
I didn't see the movies in my Rightstuff catalog or on their site though.

That's because Aniplex apparently decided that it was a good idea to ONLY sell the movies from Bandai's own store.
This is probably a stupid question, but in the last episode, when the robots were coming towards the Grand Zamboa, its eyes were glowing red.
And in the film, the eyes were white.
In the last episode and film, the other bits in the fight scene showed the Grand Zamboa with white eyes, so why the sudden change to red eyes?

Dunno… Maybe whoever animated that scene just thought it would look cool if its eyes were glowing red when it launched its final attack or something. Though that reminded me of a rather odd thing about the movie...
In the shot you just showed us, the Grand Zamboa looks the same as it did in the TV-series except without the red eyes. However, in the previous shot it was shown in, it was 3 billion light years tall and made of fire. Why did it suddenly go back to its slightly less mind-blowingly insanely oversized form?
Well, the you could see the Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann inside the head of the Super Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, so I'd imagine the same would be true for the Grand Zamboa. I don't think it changed forms so much that the camera just zoomed in to focus on it since that was where Simon needed to go. Unless there was an animation gaffe or something that I'm not remembering. The scale was wonky to begin with, at any rate.

Not me. I mean, come on, it's a universe-sized Kamina made of fire! How is a universe-sized Kamina made of fire not awesome?

Yeah… Problem here being, judging from the Super Grand Zamboa's introduction, it seemed more to me like the Anti Spiral just took the regular GZ and made it bigger, rather than creating a brand new mech outside it the way Team Dai-Gurren did. Also, if it was just showing the inside of the SGZ's head... why were there no flames anywhere? The thing was made of fire! (Or, technically Spiral Power, but whatever.)
I'd chalk that up to an animation oversight when they were splicing the clips together, then.
The scale was wonky to begin with, at any rate.
I now know your secret identity, captain.
I can't help but laugh at the fact that the "galaxy-sized" TTGL is actually 100 million light years in height, never mind the fact that the SGGL is visible even at TTGL scale.
So, got talked into starting this series and have to say…. going into it with low expectations doesn't hurt. If by the end of this, I consider buying the dvd's, I'll deem it "job well done!"

It just doesn't look like a mecha. Like, at all.
I just watched Lagenn-hen today,I thought it was an awesome movie!
I love how they all got TTGL's of their own,it was a nice touch up!
I still prefer Aim For The Top! over this though, it will always be Gainax's greatest super robo show.
Bringing this thread back to life because I just saw Parallel Works 2
All the vids are on this youtube channel
http://www.youtube.com/user/asdffgb
Here's the names and my summary/thoughts on each vid
Any fan should go check it out.
Kittan Zero
! Story telling how Kittan and his sisters stole King Kittan. It felt cartoony but it's a nice story. Felt Kiyal got more screentime than the other sisters. She must be favored since she has her own vid later.
Big Building
! Remember the final fight with Lord Genome? Now imagine that fight when you're high. That's what I thought when I saw this. They're controlling something but they look more like monsters than robots.
Ore no XXX was Uchu Hitotsu
! If Big Building was Gurren Lagann on weed, this vid is Gurren Lagann on acid. I'm still not really sure what's going on until the end.
Gunmen Symphonia
! Nice little montage of Gurren Lagann combining? with other robots and seeing their designs. Wish I knew japanese since there's a not of subtitles in the vid.
Kiyal's Magical Time
! Think of all the cute schoolgirl animes you can. Now combine them all with Kiyal as the main character. This is what the vid's about. She's friends with Darry and I don't what these types of anime but I'm guessing there's a ton of little references in here.
Dai Gurren Goodbye
! A Gimmy and Darry vid when they're little, and there's no close up on a baby penis. It's a story that I had a hard time following, but they go on an adventure on the Dai-Gurren and they meet a strange creature. There were also subtitles in there that I couldn't read so I had a hard time following.
The Sense of Wonder
! Felt like a medieval story around Nia/Simon with appearances from Kamina/Yoko and other cameos. Bittersweet ending.
Kiyal's Magical Time
[hide] I'm pretty sure they're mostly making a lot of references to Card Captor Sakura. The magic circles, the outfits, the flying…
[/hide]
I think my favorite one was 'The Sense of Wonder.'
Was Garlock in any of them?
Recursion is delicious.
TTGL.
My second favorite anime. Soo much GAR.
Years ago, back when it was the big thing, and everyone had Kamina glasses on their avatars, I read one volume of the manga, and decided 'mediocre at best'.
For want of other stuff to watch, I've been streaming it at two episodes a day (netflix). It really expands once you get past the first book. It seems to have a little more substance than the fanservice and explosions initially relay
I like Rossiu (noble-intentions dictator) and Viral the best. Viral seems like an OP sidestory character- let fate crap on him a few times, then he finds redemption.
I'd still have preferred Garlock's quest to destroy waterfall governments. It seemed much more interesting than the Anti-Spiral saga.
So I started to watch this a while ago, I'm at epsiode 8 currently. I like it, but I wonder if it stays good after a certain persons dead? I kinda kept watching it up till now just because of that guy was awesome…

The story doesn't even start till that happens. the second half is better.
Good, then I'll keep watching it. Guess that part was neccesary like the one in Hoshi no Samidare. thanks!
Robby is quite right. Although that certain someone is gone, the show stays really awesome. Especially where Lordgenome and Viral are concerned. And the end is just insane.
You can't forget Kitan. Dude was awesome.
There's a bunch of different camps when it comes to GL's quality, but I think the largest one is the people who feel the series deteriorated after the first/second arc.
Don't pay attention to them though.
Kamina was also a worthless character, I'm so amazed people could be Geass'd by him. Especially when Garlock was right there in the prologue.
And second in command. But he really didn't do much…
I almost stopped watching GL after a certain person's finale, but I kept watching after a while. Now I feel like slapping the old me for ever thinking of stopping, because the second arc is so much better compared to the first arc and I just love it. <33
I find it hilarious this topic was revived right when I was watching my new Gurren Lagann DVDs I got yesterday.
Kamina is awesome. He's only does one thing, but no one can motivate people like he does. He's a catalyst. A badass catalyst.
As to the arcs, I love them both for different reasons.
I love the first arc, but it just feels so godamn slow compaired to the second arc. It's like I'm watching something that doesn't wanna end. That wasn't my impression of it when I watched it for the first time, I actually thought it was pretty fast and amazingly cool (and I still do), but after watching that epic finale and seeing how freakin' fast paced the second arc was, the first arc felt like I was watching a turtle with a boulder on it's back.
He's only does one thing, but no one can motivate people like he does.
Domon Kasshu met Shinji Ikari in SRW F.
Instrumentality BACKFIRED.
What took me so long to watch this!?!?!? One Piece and this are the only anime/manga that have made cry man tears. Great characters and nice story such a good anime.
Your posting history suggests a heavy addiction to mainstream shounen was a major barrier you had to overcome before finding yourself here.

Shit happens I guess.
Once I finish Legend of the Legendary Heroes i'm going to start watching this.
I found this to be kind of bland. I sort of gave up after they
! defeated the Helix King and then made a city and then turned into bad guys in some sort of dystopian absolute-power-corrupts-absolutely kind of way.
Did I give up too early?
Yes, you did. Well, at least you didn't drop it at episode 8 like most retards out there.

Honestly, that's just a warm up for what's comming next.
Yu Yu Hakusho and Gurren Lagann are my favorite animes ever.

Gurren Lagann is about the most un-blandest thing you could ever watch.
Not a minute goes by without something crazy or ridiculous happening.

you should pick the series back up the ending is possibly the most unbland thing ever made or you could just watch the second movie witch takes the finale up a notch
