A raw, yeah. The complaints about this episode's animation are… actually sorta well-founded, I absolutely hate to admit (since it means I share an opinion with all those butthurt 2ch dickfaces). I just can't call it anything but half-assed. Like, ok, it's cool that one dude had a singular stylistic vision and did all the storyboarding by himself or whatever, but I'll be damned if that vision isn't totally ugly, static, and really, really boring compared to what came before it.
At least the GATTAI sequence was completely badass. Man. And Kamina training Simon by throwing boulders at him was pretty funny too.

4-27-07 (4:45AM EDT)–-- Gainax Director Takami Akai Resigns Over Mixi Diary Commentary
One of Gainax's founding members, Director Takami Akai has announced his resignation after comments he published in his Mixi Diary were scrutinized by fans for being "discomforting". He was a producer and prominent force behind Gainax's latest animation, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann which started running on Japanese TV this month. Akai published his resignation on the Gainax website on April 27th. He's well known as the creator of the popular "Princess Maker" girl grooming simulation games. The comment in question lashed out at alleged criticism of Gurren Lagann made on 2ch with some rather graphic language (something about one bringing one's face to one's anus and breathing deeply). A wave of fan comments subsequently poured into the main Gainax blog indicating they had collectively been insulted. Akai posted an apology along with his resignation, saying that there was no room for an excuse to his actions. His mixi diary was open to the general public. His name will disappear from the credits of Gurren Lagann from the 5th episode, scheduled to broadcast on the 29th. He expressed heartbreak at leaving the staff of the show after having been intimately involved on the production for over 5 years. Akai has his own company titled NineLives and is married to mangaka Kimiko Higuchi. He did the original character designs for the DAICON III animation and was a classmate of Evangelion director Hideaki Anno in his university days. It's gravely serious - start a new topic, there's a lot I've learned on this incident and it's well worth a discussion in its own right. Use a title like "Gainax founder resigns over 2ch complaints".
Short version: Japanese otaku are scum.

As I said, the animation + art (which seemed to be the primary problem) with episode four wasn't all that bad. The flaws were the script, over-use of blushing and really campy format - it's the typical "filler" episode that doesn't really accomplish anything. Episode five was much the same but left on a poignant note and didn't seem so inane.
Episode six just aired..and I want to see it really badly. @_@;
Come on anon…sub this quickly! A pity the FSN patch didn't come out else there would be more interest.

I just downloaded all the released episodes cause I started seeing pictures of Yoko and I was mesmerized by her hotness. I'll watch it later tonight or tomorrow.

Well, I haven't seen any of this show yet although I plan on it eventually.
But on the topic of real robots and super robots (might as well post here instead of making a new thread)…well it might be considered a "real robot" series but I'm currently finishing Turn A Gundam and I'm liking it quite a bit (I actually started watching it a few years ago, but I put off finishing it until now). Yeah, I get lost sometimes when it comes to the story, but it's a pretty good series. I like the setting and it has awesome music too. I'd say Turn A Gundam is my second favorite Gundam series (after G Gundam).

Just watched the first 2 episodes. I was BLOWN AWAY by the first episode. I forget the last time I watched something which got me feeling like I'm watching a legend in the making like that.
I loved episode 2 with the humor during the night scene with Kamina and Ron. I enjoyed that laugh.
Needless to say episode 3 when I watch it tomorrow as well as the rest (it's late) are gonna be great too. Needless to say also, that I'll be following this series to it's 26th episode end.

Actually, I read that initially, there was a scene with the chicks in the bath instead of the flashbacks in the middle of the episode, but it got replaced because of the time the anime's aired at.
They'll probably put the scene back in the DVDs or something. -

I haven't seen six yet, but from a screenshot of the sub I just saw, Kamina's "MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA MUDA" in episode three wasn't just a coincidence, it was a homage.

I really can't wait to see this. I heard lots of good things about it and I can't wait to check it out. The Mecha designs look really cool too. It's got that wacky/zany look but not too zany.

Wtf was that? The episode wasn't interesting or anything, and the art style….wtf man. I haven't watched 5 and 6 yet but please tell me the art and animation in back to normal in them..

Episode five is alright. Ignoring four, it's the least interesting episode in the series but it goes beyond simple fighting, really - it's got a lesson to be told as well. It's still filler in the same sense of four, but less arsinine filler.
Six is recap but that recap is censorship because the naked awesome of the episode is too much for 8:00 AM TVTokyo. So, only the last eight minutes or so of the episode (and the first four? Help me folks) is new, but what IS new is batscat insane.

I haven't seen it so I wouldn't know, but Gainax said on their blog that the episode substituted the fanservice for recap.

Kamina is GAR and his place in SaiGar 2008 is secure. Man, legendary episode, legendary fight…fudgin' awesome as epic and godly holy shoot I don't even know what to say.

So I watched 3 eps of this so far and it kicks ass, but I freaking HATE Yoko, mainly due to the fact that she's fan-service material.
Kamina kicks ass and it's good to see Simon's confidence raising.

Yes, he was imitating Dio when he fought Viral; later he screams "ORA ORA ORA!" against some Rabbit Ganmen so it's pretty evident that's a homage to Jojo and not just a coincidence.
