gurren lagann is bland?
whatthefuckamireading?
Gurren Lagann is about the most un-blandest thing you could ever watch.
Not a minute goes by without something crazy or ridiculous happening.
you should pick the series back up the ending is possibly the most unbland thing ever made or you could just watch the second movie witch takes the finale up a notch
I wouldn't go so far as to call it bland - GL has a lot of energy, a rich world setting and a fresh attitude. But in terms of plot development, character types, and themes, it does borrow/steal a lot from older classic mecha anime, and there's very little I could look at in GL and say it's unique to GL. Not even the drills.
One of the major strengths of Gainax - very elaborate, well animated fight scenes - isn't put to good use in GL because there's no tension. It's usually GL or the heroes hacking through mountains of fodder. The best fight in the entire series was Simon versus Lord Genome in Episode 15, and prior to that, GL's debut battle against Enki. None of the fights post Episode 15 are memorable except the final one in 27, and I don't think that fight was of equal quality to the ones in 1-2-3, 7-8 and 15.
On the issue of post-Lord Genome, Part III and Part IV have very different tones from the first two arcs. Part I was action/adventure, Part II was war and responsibility, while Part III is about ethics and politics. Part IV is…hard to characterize, but it brings some closure to the hanging issues from Part III.
In the end, I'd say Part II is as good a place to stop if one doesn't want to continue with the anime. If you're going to go into Part III, might as well watch it all.
