I really don't like this "Episode" idea.

I wonder what this is.
Either Sonic 4 Episode 2 or something else.
I remember reading that they only have the story written for Episode 2, but nothing else yet.
Pretty much shows how much of a ,,priority" Sonic 4 is to Sega. -
And yet they expect their fans to still buy multiple versions of it.
I would normally make some sort of derugatory remark against Sega right now, but really, what's the point?
-
You also ignore the fact that this was almost 20 years ago for me. Plus you don't have to own every single game from both series to have an opinion on the subject…
When its Mario 3 and Mario World? Two of the top games of the NES and the SNES respectivley, and the cornerstones of the Mario franchise? Yeah, you kind of need to have played those to make any sort of fair comparison to anything, if you want to compare one franchise to another.
And since Sonic and Knuckles, and what it did, was pretty much the pinnacle of wha Sonic had to offer as well…
Comparing Sonic 1 to Mario on the gameboy is just... a weird comparison to go to, as opposed to the best both franchises had to offer.
-
While I love SMW, I never was a huge fan of Mario 3..
Still, Sonic 3 & Knuckles was better than both of them.
-
Mario 3 is all kinds of amazing. Especially if you don't use the warp whistles, which I don't think a lot of people actually ever did.
This is one of the new acts created after the big uproar a few months ago.

Don't think they got the message about too many speedboosters and too little control.
Also I noticed super sonic at one point wasn't fast enough to go up a wall and needed to go back and find….a speed booster.
-

In defense of Sega, it's wasn't nearly as out-of-control as Sonic CD was.
-
I'm actually warming to it. I think the main problem is how much the player had mastered the level, hence the rushed feeling at various intervals. I like the card theme too, despite how repetitive it was.
Did anyone else get frustrated at the music looping?
Conclusion: Its not amazing, but this was WAY better than the previous videos/clips we've seen.
-

Sonic CD was trying about a million new things at once, and not all of them worked. Still a respectable game, although the spin dash is a bit weird.
-
That fucking title music…
-

I'll give it that much. I only tried it again about a year ago on the Sonic Gems collection that I borrowed from a friend.
Honestly, I thought the music was okay and the opening cinematic was just incredible.
But the game became fucking unplayable in Wacky Workbench. I still don't know how I passed that.
And I still believe there is a special level in hell for whoever made that race with Metal Sonic.
All-in-all it was a decent game that kept things I liked in Sonic 2 and 3, but it really has not aged well. Still if you didn't have Snatcher and that Terminator game, it would've been worth owning Sega CD back in the day. I would've been pleased back then if I actually owned one.
EDIT:
Oh, and that one level where you have to fight Robotnik using those pinball flippers.Further proof that springs need to be used in moderation.

I think you're under a bit of a misapprehension - it was made in parallel to sonic 2, so is best viewed as a sequel to the original sonic game. Naka & Yasuhara went over to america to make Sonic 2, leaving oshima & half of sonic team to work on CD.

Oh, I thought it was made right before 2. So both teams thought of the spin dash thing then.
Still have to agree with you though, the spin dash was weird in Sonic CD.
-
It's an incredibly large game though.
The kind of thing people hoped CD's would bring to 2d games but never really did past this.
-
And I still believe there is a special level in hell for whoever made that race with Metal Sonic.
Sadistic combination of "That One Boss" plus "That One Level" with "Difficulty Spike" thrown in for the Lulz.
-
The only Sonic game I really like is Sonic Spinball.
It's pretty great when you get used to the loose, Sonic physics.
-
Ah yes, the race with Metal Sonic.
…
Oh God the race with Metal Sonic. I still have nightmares about that damn modded toaster.
-

I'm still convinced you cannot pass that thing on your first try.
The whole race is like a Dragon's Lair game. Pointless trial-and-error because you need clairvoyance to see these things coming your way.
And I know I mentioned it before, but I can't be the only one who was driven insane by Wacky Workbench.
It's an incredibly large game though.

Yeah I can at least appreciate Sonic CD in the same way I appreciate Castlevania 64; had a lot of great ideas, but mostly failed in execution.
Back in the day when a friend of mine had Sega CD, we always hoped we would see a Sonic CD 2…before going back to playing Snatcher.
Good times.

No this is stupid, you're being stupid.
Stop trying to pretend you have any leg to stand on.GUYZ I TOO KNOW STAR WARS!! I MAY NOT HAVE SEEN THE ORIGINAL TRIOLOGY BUT I SAW HALF OF ATTACK OF THE CLONES AND I RESERVE A RIGHT TO AN OPINION

Are you using shitty TVTropes lingo.
If so then stop.
-
I really don't like this "Episode" idea.
Episodes are supposed to make releasing large stories faster since you release parts at a time. Valve, however, didn't get the memo.
They're just using it here to make people pay for more games.

So I have to have played mario 3 & 4 to be able to comment?
-
So I have to have played mario 3 & 4 to be able to comment?
You haven't even played Mario World 2 or Bros 1 have you, or Mario RPG.
All you've played is the subpar not even Miyamoto made game boy ones. What the hell is that.
I don't want you rolling your eyes and begrudingly setting off to play games, I want you to admit how obviously dumb your prior assertions were.

I missed a couple of games releases, but I've still owned tons of mario games.
[hide]Gameboy- Mario 1 & 2
Super nintendo
- mariocart
N64
- mariocart
Gameboy colour
- super mario bros deluxe
Gameboy advanced
- warioland
Nintendo ds
- mariocart
- mario & luigi 1& 2
- supermario bros
- warioware[/hide]
The point being that I might have missed a few in the middle, but I've still caught up with the steady game development with the more recent games. Anyway I stand by my opinion, that being that both sonic and mario were awesome on each console, but impossible to compare in the early years as both were on such different consoles. I didn't own any sonic games past the megadrive that could be used as a fair comparison.
Side note: I could only find half my games. (Some of the names were from memory)
-
That better be a sarcastic post lolll.
It's like you somehow went to Texas and instead of your itinerary being "Alamo! Dallas! San Antonio! Austin! Houston!" it's a bunch of small towns in fucking nowhere.
-
Gameboy
- Mario 1 & 2
Gameboy colour - super mario bros deluxe
Nintendo DS - New supermario bros
Seriously dude? Were you just choosing Mario games at random?
The ones I left in your post were the closest ones to being an actual Mario game.
Super Mario Word, Super Mario Bros 2, 3, Super Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy.
Play at least two of those (preferably at least one 3d game as well as one 2d)
Then you're entitled to an opinion.
- Mario 1 & 2
-
How did you own an SNES and not at least own either Mario World or All Stars.
How is that even possible.
Super Mario Word, Super Mario Bros 2, 3, Super Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy.
And Yoshi's Island.
-
Yoshi's Island is Miyamoto's crowning achievement in the 2D platformer space, IMO.

You've only played two core mario games, and one being a port.

If the playstation hadn't come out so shortly after those games then I would have probably got them.
I feel I've missed out on something truly epic.
Any recommended games for the DS I should get?
( other than what I listed) -
SMB3, SMBW, SMBW2, Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, NSMB Wii & Galaxy 1 & 2
You've basically missed out on the platforming genre.
-
Yoshi's Island is hella underrated, it's a fantastic game straight up.

Just an assumption, but SMUDGER, did you get your SNES late into its life? As that's the only way you couldn't have played SMW or SMA by that time since SNES' were packaged with Yoshi's Island. :p

That list is huge!
Is this down to advertising in the UK or just my bad fortune?

The bosses in that game are just incredibly imaginative.

I got mine late.
it was packaged with world + all stars on one cartridge.

Most of those games were marketed to hell and back + had extensive coverage in games mags at the time.
Super Mario Brothers 3 had a film.

I'm honestly dumbfounded…
...I can't even explain how I've missed these games. I feel like the twilight zones music is about the break out in the background, followed by the guy in black & white holding the mario collection.
Perhaps I really do need to explore these games first before casting an opinion.
-
You haven't lived until you've assaulted a frog's uvula with eggs and had him shit you out in defeat.
-
I think I'm going to get me a copy of the gameboy advance Mario World now. I'm in the mood for it now, and I miss cape flying. 10$ used on amazon… maybe ebay will be even cheaper.
-
For anyone who wants to see what zephos is talking about.

You can play all of them save yoshi's island on a wii.
-
This one was my favourite.
The fact that you got launched into space out of the blue was very exciting at the time. @Darkstorm:You can play all of them save yoshi's island on a wii.
My cousin has a port of it on her gameboy.
The control scheme doesn't work quite as well on it though. -

Are the GBA versions of these games the same as the originals?
Cause I have Yoshi's island on my ds.
-
Super Mario Advance 3, right?
As far as I know from magazines at the time, it was essentially identical to the snes release except for a few extra levels, but I haven't played any of the GBA ports myself.
-
I got mine late.

That one was before the 2nd model, which came packed with YI.

That never happened in the UK, which is where both myself & smudge are from.
We got the japanese model snes to begin with, and there were no redesigns released.

Yoshi's Island DS is a sequel. Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island is the original SNES version with some additional stuff.
-
Oh, he meant YI2?
That was actually not made by nintendo anyway, it was made by artoon…who's founder oddly enough was Oshima, one of the guys who created sonic.
