Which do you like better? The Dragonball Z Funimation dub or just plain japanese subs.
Dragonball dub or sub
-
-
Dub for me, Goku and the rest of his family aren't voiced by the same 70+ year old woman.
And really if you look at the later FUNi dub (like the redub of Saiyan and early Namek) it's quite good so definately dub for me.
-
For me I like the dub just by a smudge. Though I've liked some voices by the japanese cast by far (kuririn, vegeta, piccolo, 19). Though I like funimation's dub though I can see why people said it sucked, though I grew up with it and that's why I like anime and manga, so that's probably why.
That and I even like some of Ocean's voices better then Funimations (Kuririn, Vegeta, Piccolo, and Zarbon)
-
The dub has done a great job with DBZ
-
Persionally I think the dub is better since Goku doesn't sound like a 10-year old girl.
-
Sub, no contest. The dubs for Dragon Ball Z and even Dragon Ball are just your typical crap dubs with a translation so loose that the people likely just read a plot summary and went from there.
-
The dub was horrible. Yes all three. DB,DBZ,GT.
-
The original japanese for me. I can't stand Bruce Falconer's score (Except the SSJ3 transformation tune and the Trunks promo music. Those were well done.) and most of FUNimation's cast is horrible…which would be Chris Sabat seeing as he makes up about 95% of the cast.
The only real saving grace of that dub is Sonny Strait. He's a great Kuririn.
But in all seriousness, I grew up with the Ocrean cast then the japanese version via fansubs and finally the Telemundo airing of the spanish dub. I can see people prefering the FUNimation dub for exactly the same reasons and I've got nothing wrong with that.
-
I don't know really. To tell you all the truth, I actually like them both because technically, they both pretty much have their faults just like some of you mentioned. But in the end, they both have thier posiives, too.:happy:
-
Well Anime News Network says there are more people who like the dub more.
-
@Don:

Appeal to Popularity much?
-
dub for me
i really dont like most of the Japanese voices(piccolo owns though)
-
I like this one:
But seriously, I prefer the sub.
-
Definitely the sub. Sean Schemmel's high pitched jew screams get really old, and Chris Sabat voices like 70% of the characters with his same, shitty voice.
Seriously, what was the reasoning with Piccolo? "WELL HE LOOKS LIKE A MONSTER GUY, SO LET'S MAKE HIM SOUND LIKE HE HAS BARBED WIRE CAUGHT IN HIS THROAT"
-
I have not seen the entire series in the orginal japanese but I have seen all of the dub (Minus the OVA's and Movies), But I can say the only thing that the dub had going for it would be the VA work most of it was decent, I do like that the dub cut out some of the unneciary nude scenes but besides that it was nothing special and the dub music sucked.
-
ROCK THE DRAGON. DRAGONBALL Z.
horrible surf guitar ensues -
Yeah, another thing the dub screwed up on: the music.
GENERIC CARTOON MUSIC HOOOOOO
-
The Sub, the Dub was made where the voice actors was constantly constipated.
-
@Cap'n:
Yeah, another thing the dub screwed up on: the music.
GENERIC CARTOON MUSIC HOOOOOO
True. This is so true. As much as I like kyle hebert's "LAST TIME ON DRAGONBALL Z!!"
Nothing beats the music of Cha la head cha la and the awesome narrator saying what happened last time.
And that horrible clown music that played during the android arc shudder
Also does anyone have clips of the Canada dub past what Ocean dubbed. I am interested in seeing it.
-
Alot of the Faulconer stuff is enjoyable on its own. Well certain ones.
But it SO doesn't fit DBZ.Now the GT music, thats just audio rape.
-
Meh, I'd say I'm split between the two. On one hand, like a lot of people are saying, its kind of annoying to have Christopher Sabat voice half the cast on the show (Even the other FUNi actors make fun of him for that), but on the other, I think Sean Schemmel's Goku > Masako Nozawa's interpretation.
.
Now the GT music, thats just audio rape.STEP INTO THE GRAND TOUR! GRAND TOUR! GRAND TOUR! GRAND TOUR!
Thats what I like about the new DBZ DVDs, the original music to English dialogue.
-
Dub for both DB and DBZ. Now, don't get me wrong, I grew up on DBZ in Japanese but it's got a positively horrible Japanese cast; I compared it with HnK which was done at around the same time and I was surprised how low quality it was.
Nothing beats the music of Cha la head cha la and the awesome narrator saying what happened last time.
That piece of trash song deserves to rot in its grave; never before have more children been echoically raped than to the terrible strings of "CHA LAH".
-
People seem to be forgetting the script is completelr "revamped" for the dub.
The infamous coverups are also not to be forgotten, I think you all know what I'm talkin about. -
definitely the Dub.
-
Yeah zephos, we all know about digital underpants, HFIL, the "next dimension", and how Goku's father was a brilliant Saiya-jin scientist who invented the false moon technology. I gave up on the dbz dub when i heard Freeza's voice in season 3 for the first time, if ryusei nakao was dead he would have been spinning in his grave, i had to rewatch the entire freeza saga in japanese to make me not hate that character anymore. It's not as though I fault people for watching the dub or liking it at all, it's just that the changes in voice and the way they act the characters changes the show for me in a way i can't stand, if you enjoy the dub, good for you, but personally i can't stand it.
-
I'd say the sub is better. Sure the dub version is what I'm used to - but I cringe at the horrid music and voice acting sometimes. Also, I watched the first few eps of this "Remastered" pish with the subs on w/ english audio and the dub script is so altered it's sickening.
eg.
Sub Raditz: There are two more who are much stronger than me hahahaha (this is the first time we hear about this vital informaton)
Goku and Piccolo look shocked
Dub Raditz: I'm only getting warmed up hahahaha
Goku and Piccolo look shocked
(Something to that effect, anyway..)Anyway, with several brilliant VAs and an amazing soundtrack, the original wins.
-
Dub, Dragonball/Z is fucking awful in original Japanese. Everyone is voiced by a high-pitched woman, and only some of the music in it is good.
-
As for me, I haven't seen all that much of the Japanese version, but I can't just turn my back on the dub. It was a huge branch all those years ago it was on Toonami's daily schedule.
-
The problem I have with the Funi VA's in general, it's not just Goku's voice, but it's just the general phoniness that they have, I can't feel any genuine emotion coming out of them. As for anyone who wants to see the original japanese version of the show, these torrents should help you http://www.torrentz.com/search?q=AHQ+dbz&x=0&y=0
-
The first two english ones were OK, a little Michael J Foxish, but cool.
God I hate Sean Schemmel's voice/acting.
GuYs I LIKE to add UP ANd Down DYNAMICS to EverYY ThinGG I SaUY In a vAuGly WhiNy FasHioN. Is that OK GuYS? -
I downloaded a vhs rip of dbz movie 2 once, it had original music with ocean group voices, it actually sounded pretty good, Peter Kelamis was a pretty good Goku, he was no Ian Corlett, but he did the voice pretty well.
-
-
@Cap'n:
Yeah, another thing the dub screwed up on: the music.
GENERIC CARTOON MUSIC HOOOOOO
And who can forget CHRIS SABAT HARDCORE GITAR SOLOS in the Funimation dub? I haven't seen much of the Japanese version to really judge Dragonball Z. But, out of the two dubs, the Ocean Group was better, voice-wise. Ryan Drummond was always a better Vegeta, and was great at making him sound like a sneaky bastard. Though Chris Sabat was better at capturing his arrogant prince side.
The only thing I've seen from the Japanese version that I can compare is the background music. I've always liked the intro better than Rock the Dragon, too.
-
The two good pieces of music in dub DBZ is the one where 17 killed Gero and Cell's theme. (Boo's theme is also worth a mention)
I like them all, really. Some voices in Funi's (Roshi, Boo, 18), Jap (Goku, Kurrin), and Ocean (Vegeta, Piccolo)
I do, however, love Funi's DB. They did a kick ass job with that. Even General Red with his accent was great.
-
Well Anime News Network says there are more people who like the dub more.
Well then it obviously must be true and we shouldn't even bother to say otherwise since ANN said so.
It couldn't possibly be that people who liked DB before most of it's US fans were even born don't bother with polls about a series they graduated from over a decade ago.
And for the record, Japanese people say the same shit and have an equal amount of complaints about the dub compared to the original.
but it's just the general phoniness that they have, I can't feel any genuine emotion coming out of them
YES! THANK YOU!!!
I enjoyed Ocean's dub and for characters like Raditz, Piccolo and Nappa, I even enjoyed their voices a little more than the original. But when the newcomers came on that had NO experience with VA jobs, it sounded like they were reading their damn scripts.
DBZ is NOT an emotionally complicated show that required practice to get in the role. (except for Nozawa maybe who did all her roles simultaneously without pauses or edits) But for Chrissake, put some oomph into it. For lack of a better term, it sounded like they were reading the pages of a comic book (since that's what they were actually doing) but the sad part was, it sounded like they were reading it to themselves.
-
What about the changed BGM? The rock music in the dub does fit DBZ more than the colorful music in the original.
-
-
The first two english ones were OK, a little Michael J Foxish, but cool.
God I hate Sean Schemmel's voice/acting.
GuYs I LIKE to add UP ANd Down DYNAMICS to EverYY ThinGG I SaUY In a vAuGly WhiNy FasHioN. Is that OK GuYS?The second Goku, Peter Kelamis is probably the worst North American voice actor ever in my opinion. I remember the first episode he was Goku, he made him sound like a retarded 13 year old who hit puberty at 5. "WOAH, TASEKSE JUST LIEK PENUT BUTTER!11"
-
The rock music in the dub does fit DBZ more than the colorful music in the original.
Yes, since obviously the people who created the original didn't know what they were doing as they created it with that music in mind.
FYI, there's no 'music' let alone 'rock' in the dub. It's a guy with a synthesizer making beeps and bleeps that sound stripped from a Mega Man game from 1994.
-
The thing that first convinced me of how awful the dub is (compared to the original:
Watching Goku's SSJ transformation in both language.
In Nozawa's rednition, there's genuine anger, emotion. It doesn't come off as unnatural.
Schemmel's…. hideous. It sounded more like some kind of animal that got shot while it was mating. Like Greg and the others have said, he wasn't great at delivery in the first place, but this was the epitome of his awful.
Another thing the original Japanese has for it: NORIO FUCKING WAKAMOTO. Oh, and I don't want to forget DAISUKE FUCKING GOURI.
And anyone who knocks the original music is crazy. Cha-La Head Cha-La's an awesome song.
-
They all sound pretty damn goofy. Asking this question is like asking if I want to be crushed by a boulder or run over by a car. Both of the options kind of suck.
-
@Cap'n:

Too bad in the redub of the beginning they never got that far. I'm sure he could have improved much more on it the 2nd time around than he did the first time. (when he was first starting out).
-
All of these voices are perfect (sarcasm).
-
When I meant rock eariler, I meant the dub music in the movies. But, the music in the funimation dub is good too.
-
All of these voices are perfect (sarcasm).
I already posted the Tree of Might one on the first page.
But I do like Tenshinhan's Yoda voice. Were they running out of ways to make the characters sound distinct, so decided on that kind of voice?
@Don:
When I meant rock eariler, I meant the dub music in the movies. But, the music in the funimation dub is good too.
I never liked what they did with the movie music myself. Seemed like they were trying too hard to make them "cool" or something.
-
@Don:
When I meant rock eariler, I meant the dub music in the movies.
That stuff was horribly out of place in the movies. The only reason that stuff is in the dub is to give people the illusion that its some sort of "hardcore" show. In reality, it makes it feel like a twelve year old's AMV.
I'd take Falconer's work over that garbage in a heartbeat. (The lesser of the two evils.)
-
@Cap'n:
Another thing the original Japanese has for it: NORIO FUCKING WAKAMOTO.
See, I like Wakamoto and all but I'm not on that stupid meme bandwagon like a lot of the idiots on the internet right now; Wakamoto is not godly because he's Wakamoto, he's godly because he's a dang fine voice actor who plays great roles.
I liked Cell's original voice but dang, his dub voice blew me away too. Not Imperfect or Normal Cell but Perfect Cell; like what omae said, Perfect Cell had a spark of the melodrama that Ocean Studios
@Cap'n:
Cha-La Head Cha-La's an awesome song.
Kageyama is the only musician in history who can't achieve a falsetto without a fellatio.
@Don:
What about the changed BGM? The rock music in the dub does fit DBZ more than the colorful music in the original.
DBZ's music wasn't spectacular but FUNimation's second dub music was outright horrid. The Ocean Studios music was pretty cool, and memorable as well; but the stuff following that was "meh".
-
I just love the soudn of Wakamoto's voice. He can be so calm and cool, and also so evil and crazy. He has a pretty awesome range and I loved him as Cell.
Daisuke Gouri (Mr. Satan and others) is probably my favorite seiyuu to listen to, though.
And yes, FUNi's music was pretty bad. I admit I liked one or two things, but as greg said, it was just painfully twangy synthesizers.
And Don Krieg, you were talking about the music in the movies?! good lord, if you meant the Falconer stuff used in the series I could sort of respect that, but the shitty band music used in the movies was absolutely EAR RAPING. Apparently it was all performed by a band aptly named "Saliva."

If theres one thing the world needs less of its starving kids and people putting godawful metal music in things to "cool them up".
Observe most AMVs on youtube for example.
