"I've always said
if you want to find out who your friends are
go to a madhouse or
jail.
and if you want to find out where love is not
be a perpetual
loser."
From Charles Bukowski's poem, "now."
Here's another good one. It's the whole poem this time, and it's called "nothing is as effective as defeat."
"always carry a notebook with you
wherever you go, he said,
and don't drink too much, drinking dulls
the sensibilities,
attend readings, note breath pauses,
and when you read
always understate
underplay, the crowd is smarter than you
might think,
and when you write something
don't send it out right away,
put it in a drawer for two weeks,
then take it out and look
at it, and revise, revise,
REVISE again and again,
tighten lines like bolts holding the span
of a 5 mile bridge,
and keep a notebook by your bed,
you will get thoughts during the night
and these thoughts will vanish and be wasted
unless you notate them.
and don't drink, any fool can
drink, we are men of
letters.
for a guy who couldn't write at all
he was about like the rest
of them: he could sure
talk about
it."
Intro for part 4 of Sifting Though the Madness For the Word, the Line, the Way:

@Rai:
"You can pick your friends,
And you can pick your nose,
But you can never pick your friend's nose."Forgot where I got that, but nonetheless [sp?] it's awesome.

"Give a man a fish and he'll be able to eat for that today. Teach a man how to fish and he'll be able to eat for the rest of his life." - Proverb?
I'm pretty sure that's from Samurai Champloo, you know the scene where that crazy hermit was teaching Jin how to fish

I'm pretty sure that's from Samurai Champloo, you know the scene where that crazy hermit was teaching Jin how to fish
because obviously the first cartoon you see with these quotes invented them
I've got a couple, but none that I think I could recite with any accuracy. This is the only one I've got access to in short order, so here it is:
“I don't care whether I'm remembered. As a matter of fact, there's a lot of people who would like to forget about me as soon as possible, and I'm on their side! You know? Just . . . hurry up and get it over with. I do what I do because I like doing it, I do it for my amusement first, if it amuses you . . . that's fine. I'm happy that you'll participate in it. But, uh, after I am dead and gone, there is no need to deal with any of this stuff, because it is not written for future generations, it is not performed for future generations. It is performed for now. Get it while it's hot, you know? That's it.” - Frank Zappa
I lately find more and more wisdom in the phrase:
"Quit yer bitching!"
I swear to god, I hear so many kids complain about how they can't drink while underage, or how the bathroom smell when they never bother to clean it, or how "this college sucks" despite the fact that here is probably the best they can do, and so many people are too poor to even afford what they have.
Yeah, too many compund sentences. Anyway, I just don't think you should complain unless you contribute something to the problem. I see to make people complain when in fact they are the problem.
"Whenever you go into a new situation, you must always believe the best untill you find out exactly what the situation's all about - THEN believe the worst."

"You can tell the same lie a thousand times, but it never gets anymore true"
"For a wounded man shall say to his assailant, 'If I live, I will kill you. If I die, you are forgiven' such is the rule of honour."
Both are from Lamb of God. ^.^

My rugby coach used to say this all the time:
"The only place where you will find success before work is in the dictionary."
(unfortunately more or less true)

"Is all that we see or seem
