No I am not bashing the manga or anything like that. I am all caught up with the anime and I was thinking about reading the manga. But I don't want to spoil anything and find out beyond the anime. So I was thinking of reading from scratch and then ending where it is the anime and continue chapters as it concides with the latest anime release. So my question is, is it pointless reading the manga if I am not trying to get ahead of the anime? Is their any arcs that were included in the manga and not the anime (besides arcs the anime hasn't gotten to yet)?

Well, if you really want to read the manga, you might as well just read past the point the anime's at. Even if you don't plan on doing that, the manga, the source material, written by Oda himself, is more worth seeing than the anime. And no, no arcs from the manga were skipped in the anime. Though filler arcs were added by Toei in the anime.

Toei tries its best not to catch up to where the story is in the manga, but it isn't easy when you consider that twenty pages of content (a long chapter) doesn't convert to twenty minutes of anime. Other than the current arc, the manga does not contain any arcs which the anime does not. However, most of the cover stories- many of which have been collected and posted on Arlong Park- have not been animated. Even though they are only a panel a week, they convey a story quite well, often without words.

If you watch 6/7 Harry Potter Movies and then read the 7th book, are you "spoilering yourself"? No. You are CONTINUING THE STORY which actually is in a much more true form than an adaptation.
Please forgive my use of Harry Potter. I'm not sorry I used un-released products as an example, I decided to just use all of them as an example. So if you skipped because I did use all of them, go back and pretend they've all been released so far, all 7 books and movies.

Also I noticed that in OP manga, Oda really puts effort into it.
What I mean is that his artwork is just fantastic and he does not skimp at any details. This isnt meant to diss other mangas and say other manga authors dont work as hard, but compare how much artwork goes into in one page of OP to lets say Naruto or Bleach.
Also I just want to add the place where the anime is at now, Oda's artwork is just fricking fantastic and it just really dissappoints me on how some parts TOEI is really skimping on the quality.
Really they are both different experiences, I enjoy both equally. Its just personal taste, but it seems like the majority of people here prefer the manga.

I had to make this decision back in fall when I caught up, I decided to start from the beginning, and it was def the right choice. Its good to go back and see how the show was made from the manga, see whats different. But also Oda includes the cover side stories in each chapter, most of which are not in the anime, so thats a good reason to go all the way back.
While with one piece I went back to the beginning, with Naruot I just skipped to where I left off with the show, which i regret cause I know the manga is very different.
One overall warning, once you read the manga, you wont look at the show the same way again… ~_~ I notice every little bit of filler in the new episodes now adays, and it just pisses me off...

I see your logic in "continuing the story". However reading ahead would make it so I would have to wait a great while before it is shown in the anime. Also the manga is only 20 pages as someone just stated. At times it can be really short with one picture a page. It can also be diffcutl at times to see what the hell is actually going on during a fighting scene unelss you breeze through it saying "yeah he just got gumo gumo no rocketta'd"( probably not the ebst example to prove my point). And sometimes their can be confusion as to who is sayign what or what is going on in the small pictues. This would make it less satisfying to me then watching a 20 minute version of what is happening in the chapter with animation and sound. This is why I would consider getting spolied if I decided to read ahead of the anime.

Fully respect your wanting to watch the anime, as opposed to reading the manga. As you stated, fight scenes are often confusing in the manga, such as chaotic frantic that was the invasion of Enies Lobby.
Though Cyringohn definitely prefers manga [with more than just One Piece], both can have their strong points. It's always badass to see attacks animated, such as Gomu Gomu no Storm, but the manga's humor tends to be much more sudden and hilarious.
Reading the entire manga will probably add nothing new to your experience, in terms of the basic One Piece feel. Toei has kept the anime extremely close in content to the manga; most of the scenes are directly copied from the manga, such as Enel's face upon realizing that Luffy is immune to electricity.
In Conclusion: don't feel the need to bother.

Well, I am certainly pissed off at Toei for totally screwing up the Davy Back Fight, but that's not really a big deal I guess.
I started off watching the anime, and eventually I did start reading the manga because I wanted to catch up. I couldn't stop reading the manga once I started. Now, however, I am finding it really hard to get back into the anime. Because quite frankly, Toei is doing a very poor job of animating Enies Lobby IMO. Occasionally there's some good episodes, but I feel like I have to wade through all kinds of filler crap. So if you want the original source, filler-free, with excellent artwork as well as being able to be completely current, then read the manga.

The more you read it the slower it becomes.
Not that you read slower but you begin to understand it more.
I also thought Anime was superiror before. However it was like my first time reading Manga and I wasn't done with the Anime yet, so the qality was still pretty good. It really took a nose dive. Enies Lobby is filled with useless fillers, time wasting pointless fillery stuff to stretch it out, and basically your wasting more time watching people star at each other and lsitening to their tohught on the last move of the fight than you would reading the Manga.
As for the Colored Manga: Slow, I've been sick too, but I haven't lost Page 6 yet(again) so there's hope I'll get it done. I've been
1000X slower since the holidays. -
Yep, and so is the anime. Come to think of it, almost everything ever is pointless, in perspective. By the time the entire human race is extinct and the entire galaxy burns out, it will have been less than the blink of an eye in the entire existance of the universe. I'll let you guys ponder that.

Why not read the manga from the beginning again and then once you get to where the anime is currently decide whether or not to read ahead? Who know's? The urge to find out what happens next might just get the best of you.

I mean do you even know how Luffy got his scar? That part was edited out in the anime. In fact the first episode was way different then how the anime began, they did some alterations like the meeting with Coby and such.

I started watching the anime and I have only recently picked up the manga, I personally think the anime and manga are both really good, the manga definately has better artwork, but the anime brings the characters to life, There are some messed up looking scenes in the anime, and some filler stuff(I personally don't mind fillers that much) I wouldn't say one is better than the other, that basically depends on preference. Anyway I would suggest just reading past the anime, I mean, if you can why not? However, if you would rather stick to being where the anime is, by all means you don't have too read past that point, but I assure you, the most recent arc in the manga has been pretty good

The manga is clearly not pointless as it have something (I don't know, maybe the Oda touch) that the anime doesn't have.
It's difficult to guess if you could be disapointed if you watch the manga.
But me too, I began with the anime (dubbed ones) then I moved to the subbed animes and finally th manga. And I just can tell you that I never regreted this.Maybe you can begin the manga from the beginning and see if you enjoy this, without spoiling the current anime.

actually sometimes manga can be better…thre's no fillers, no changes in e story like bleach(those hu noes)...SBS column and also sidestorys...and personally for me, manga can be more exciting sometimes if u can imagine it like an anime in ur own mind...bring e action to a whole new lvl perhaps

Certain scenes have a different feeling in the manga than they did in the anime. A few scenes are different,but not many.
Some of the scenes are done better in the manga, some are better in the anime. Reading the manga isn't a totally different story from the anime,but it's a different experience reading a manga than watching an anime in the first place, so it's worth checking out.Oh yeah and the pacing in the manga is usually ALOT better and feels quicker and less dragged out in the manga. Also IMHO the story points are usually better in teh manga, the fights are usually better in the anime.
Also, it's a children's comic from Japan.

No, the Comic is alot better. The only good scene in the show that was better than the comic was Storm what with the New World Symphony crap, but most of the scenes (especialy Enies Lobby) are dragged out, stagnant, boring. Everything is over-exaggerated. Humor and attacks, mostly, until they are just not funny or cool anymore. If you want a perfect example, watch and read the entire Arlong Arc back to back.
When I first got into One Piece, I was watching the show. It was actually Luffy vs Bleuno (If I knew Toei was going to fire those brilliant animators and fuck up the entire series, I never would've gotten into it in the first place). I've watched the entire series in the show, and only read maybe the first 13 volumes of the comic and Enies Lobby. So, of course, I was wondering why people of this forum loved the Arlong Arc so much. I certainly didn't find anything special about it, but then I read the Comic in Viz Magazine and was completely baffled.
Same with Enies Lobby.
I just really dislike Toei and where they're headed with this series. I could make a more entertaining depiction of Oda's work with finger puppets.

There's stuff in the anime that's diffrent in the manga. Luffy had some extra attacks in the anime's Luffy vs. Blueno fight.

One Piece is a must-read manga.
I too began with the anime, but thanks to the One Piece manga, I discovered alot of manga and now all I do is reading them. I stopped watching anime for the most part.Also One Piece is one of the mangas where the art is great and the fights are great too and easily understandable in comparison with other manga, where you have to watch the anime to understand whats happening.

I began with the anime, but due to impatience (the anime is behind the story) I moved to the manga so I could see the story.
I admit, the manga spoils the enjoyment of seeing the story play out first hand in animation, I tend to look now only for the important scenes to be animated. But when I do see the anime, I also like to see 10 eps back to back because one episode on its one doesn't seem to give me enough of the story and it feels too short watching a single episode.

For me, the manga is legions above the anime. I'm not sure how to put it, but it's kind of like 'less is more' in terms of story and pacing and Oda just got it right for this kind of story.
Plus when it comes right down to it, it's hard to duplicate perfection.

I've always thought of manga as the proper way to enjoy One Piece, and the anime as the 'B-grade way' to experience it. Filler and changes to the storyline are what made the decision for me. If these don't bother you, then I don't think it would make any difference how you go through the story.
I'm a fan of staying as close to the source as possible, which is another reason why I read the manga version. I've never thought of any scene better as animated either - this especially applies to the action scenes.

If Enel ever reached the moonAlso Enies Lobby has got to be the worst arc adaptation I've ever seen yet. They are so desperate to pull away so they don't catch up, but it's like every episode they try something new to slow it down, and halfwya through the production some intern went "No, trydoing THIS" and they tried something new on the spot.
The quality has suffered. The Manga is like watching the Anime Still Frame without color, only you have really awesome quality and no fillers. You just get the pure, raw story. No, not "the way it was meant meant to be told", the way it IS TOLD!!!
Like I said if the only reason holding anyone back is because they think reading the manga will spoil the story for them when they watch the Anime, realize it's the same feelingyou get when you read a book and later watch the movie for it. Watching it in reverse, the book is just always better. Would you play a video game based off a movie based off a book and call it good? No, because it's been adapted so much, and things have been changed.
Why?
Well each indutry has limits and censors. What will get you a kids rating with a movie might get you an adults ranking for TV if the movie was a mini-series instead.
There is no excuse to not read the Manga, it is a brilliant piece of artwork that the Anime, while still good, it's like looking at a cat's butt next to a snow globe.
No excuse, absolutely NO EXCUSE.
"Oh hey, I'd better not read the next chapter of the book because then I'l lfind out what happens, and if I watch the movie later, assuming they'll make one, I won't have spoiled myself by reading and finding out what happens!!!!"
It just sounds stupid.

The manga doesn't feel the urge to explain everything in sing lsentences because of some flashy animation that Toei thinks some people won't understand due to said flashiness.
And sometimes the anime is ugly.
But it's still good.

I've held the anime in higher regards than the manga until very recently… Lately, it seems Toei has dropped the ball. Especially in this last episode! Zoro's Asura transformation (which I've been looking forward to for a while) was lackluster at best! The purple energy shadow looked better than the actual move itself. Hell, even the Enbima Yonezu Oni Giri had better animation (it actually gave me goosebumps).
The only thing that keeps me watching the anime these days are the incredible voice actors. I love the verbal interaction between characters, and Zoro's reactions are priceless. All in all, it's the chemistry between the voice actors & their ability to flawlessly pull off Oda's humor that keeps me watching the show.
Moral of the Story: Manga Is Good.

I too, much like all of you, began to watch One Piece. But sadly, it was first through the 4Kids version that I began to watch the series. I obviously knew an assload of material was replaced and things were purposely lost in translation so that American kids wouldn't do what the characters did, since we apparently America isn't smart enough to realize you can't stretch your limbs like Luffy.
Even through the horrible dub, I already fell in love with the series by the time Usopp was introduced. But I knew that the manga had to be obviously more true to Oda's work since he created the series. And I was right. From then on I blended in both watching the anime and reading the manga at the time, to note the differences, etc.
Like mr_bushido has said, recently, the anime's appeal is in the seiyuu themselves. Spandam, and the seiyuu, Masaya Onosaka, are almost one in the same, as I feel that he potrays him perfectly and conveys that feeling of hate I get when I hear him speak as Spandam.
But yeah, the manga does have a reason to exist:
Without it, you have no anime. And the story is always in-canon at all times, since it's Oda's work and not the product of the team that makes the anime.

I think that the good about the anime is that you get to see scenes come alive with VAs, music and motion. But the problem with being a popular anime series always at the threat of catching up to the source leads to fillers. Thus making OP similar to most long-running shonen anime: they can't end or destroy their fanbase, but they can't move too quickly or else run out of material and end up doing filler either within the plot or extremely long filler arcs.
Personally while I really haven't seen too much of the anime outside clips online and several episodes of the crappy dub, I rather see it as a guideline of the animation of scenes instead of a direct interpretation of Oda's story.

This is not the mangas fault.Yeah. I've never once failed to understand what was going on in a panel for a reason other than scan quality, for this series anyway. Oda's art is very clean, just as or maybe even moreso than the anime (heck there are numerous times where I've seen a fight scene in the anime, and thought that the manga looked way better in comparison).

This is not the mangas fault.Which brings us to the point of whether it's worth investing in the tankos or just reading it on the computer. I for one prefer to read all the fights in a tanko, there's always key details that you miss. I was completely clueless during the first pages of Zoro's fight with Kaku (when he hasn't transformed yet) but in the tanko everything was clear and beautiful. My sister also prefers the tankobons because she hates having to wait a week between chapters and prefers to have it all in one go.
As to the animation, it's very good at times. Nami's flashback is to day, the only scene in any anime to ever make me cry. And the fights are really good. Just skip the filler.

I noticed Spandam keeps getting the Anime "fat head syndrome" where they make faces look really stupid. It's stoped now but he used to always get a fat chunky circle for a face.
Did that ever happen in the Manga? no, all the characters are drawn perfectly on every panel.
The voice acting is all that keeps me watching the Anime as well, they have great voices, but the art quality and the changes from the Manga to the Anime are really making me switch to Manga only. Plus ADC is on a sort of break again, still waiting for 292, and I know what happens anyways.

In terms of fights, I find the fights in the anime more thrilling, that's probably mostly because of the music and sound effects, but one of the main things I do like about the manga is it leaves more to the imagination(heh, how many times has that been said before?). Although I usually don't mind fillers, it's when they interfere with the main storyline that gets me pissed, like the davy back fight arc, I wasn't even reading the manga back then but I knew something was making it too long and drawn out, I also disliked the foxy returns filler, it kinda felt like they killed the mood of the previous arc by extending it, oh well, anyway I still love both, and I wouldn't suggest giving up the anime entirely, just try reading the manga and see if you like it, I loved it once I read it

Youre my kind of person.Ive spent years trying to convince people on the complete insignificance of the human race and all its creations,yet people tend to get…....depresed.......after im finished.Dont have a clue why,though.

If you think about it, by reading the manga, Robin has really not been with the Strawhats as long as the anime makes it out to be, making the decision that Luffy considers her his nakama much more powerful. She joined the crew just before they travel to Skypeia, get to Skypeia, her dream is rekindled by seeing the lost civilization of Jaya, they go back to the Blue Seas, do the Davy Back fight and run into Aokiji soon after. In that amount of time, Luffy considers her a true friend? It's almost mind boggling, but true. He took her in because she had nowhere to go and saved his life a few times (from Crocodile throwing him into the sand pit and his poisonous hook), and trusted her completely despite an Admiral of the Marines warned him not to. The anime made her stay way extended and supposedly be in the crew for almost twice as long as intended, but I just think that it doesn't do the manga justice. So, read the manga to see what you may have missed and just for kicks, if not for any other reason.
