I remember Iron Giant. I saw it in theaters when it first came out. Nice artwork, kind of boring though. Wasn't really that gripping.
I really liked TIG when I first saw it, and many times after that.
But then I showed it to my Dad, and we watched it together. And he correctly predicted all the scenes before they actually happened, despite having never seen the movie before.
When it finished, I asked how he knew how everything played out, and he said it's becomes The Iron Giant is just an animated version of every 1950's science fiction "monster from space" story ever aired, although with different ideas from different movies.
After that, I realized I completely hate Brad Bird now.

Actually, the thought of millions of kids and their parents going into a movie theater expecting to see a nice family-friendly wholesome Disney movie and then seeing that is actually kind of appealing.
Oh, and Iron Giant is teh Awesome.

If I formed opinions based on that kind of comparison, I'd hate almost every movie I ever saw. The Iron Giant was based off a novel written in 1968, btw. I can't say I really had any problems with the movie from what I remember, it's been a few years since I've seen it…and usually if I am certain I like something I can't be convinced otherwise by someone else's opinion that drastically.

I can't count how many movies I've enjoyed despite being given mediocre reviews. They gave Coraline a C+ and I still consider that one of my favorite (animated) movies of all time.

But yeah, I have a feeling I'll like this movie more than Ebert (or not, who knows?) I pretty much always check with Ebert though because he's usually on the ball with this stuff, but I have disagreed with him before.

You must live near Pleasantville or somewhere close. All the kiddies in a 100 Mile radius of me are thick, unappreciative, snot nosed, pint-sized big-mouthed, slow, smelly, rude and crude MONSTERS that seem to always wait for the right moment in movies to either kick my chair repeatedly or start bitching to mommy dearest about the candy she didn't buy for their spoiled ass. Did I mention they're thick?

Well, that's nice that you're all fine and dandy with me feeling that you being smart is about as legit as Britany Spears being as saint, and that you equate mentally handicapped people with Winnie the Pooh, but you totally dodged a legit question. It was random and off-topic though, like most of this thread, anyway.
I will be seeing the movie Friday night….I try to avoid reading reviews beforehand, I'd rather not go in to movies with other people's opinions already in my head. I read them afterward and than evaluate.

No, that's not the point. It's about Bird.
I hate style over substance. I cannot appreciate a stupid movie with nothing but flashy graphics or cinematography, even if it's atmospheric in a way I like. This is why I'm very hesitant to waste my time with "turn your brain off" movies.
But I also value original substance, so if the film is recycled drama with a different style, I may/may not like that either depending on how it's handled.
Ratatouille was 0% substance and 100% style. The Incredibles was about 30-70. The Iron Giant used to be 50-50 for me, which was why I liked it the most.
I've seen what Bird can do with an entirely original idea (Ratatouille) and I don't like it. So this means that the only things I like of his is when he pursues an already defined approach to an existing plot in his own style.
I'm disappointed in Bird because I thought he was a better director than he actually is. My feelings toward The Iron Giant aren't going to change, but my impression of Bird definitely did tank based on what I've seen him do since TIG.

I loled at Ebert's opening paragraph. The man's such an animation buff. But that's why we like him.
But yeah, I'm not going to take Ebert's word on everything. He definitely likes the movie, as do the majority of reviewers so far. That's enough to go see it.
And I do wonder if people's reviews are tempered by just how high the expectations were for this film. It had a LOT riding on its shoulders.

I think I have once seen The Iron Giant but… I don't really remember what happened in that movie. I probably should watch it again, sometime. Coraline was very neat, tho. I hope The Graveyard Book gets the same treatment.

Yeah. Lilo and Stitch was pretty awesome, more people should see it. Treasure Planet was pretty good in spots. Does Fantasia 2000 count as earlier in the century? It has 2000 in the name but it was technically released in 1999, last century. Dinosaur was 2000 for sure, but it was cgi and nobody cares about that one.
