Omg, I think I just made biggest find from OP that I've ever done.
So, I was looking old one piece episodes, namely episode 147, found here. So watch closely around 5:00->5:05. Luffy takes look at Blackbeard and u see frames of 2 shadowy figures with evil smile on their face, very quick frames so pay attention.
And then scene shows Shanks. When u take closer look, those frames have nothing to do with Shanks etc. And its not Blackbeards actual face either because it would've shown missing teeth! So when Luffy and Zoro said "Its not that guy, Its those guys", were those the famous "guys"? What do you guys think?
First, the anime can not be used for big finds unless it also appears in the manga. The anime screws stuff up all the time.
Secondly, the whole point of Luffy and Zoro getting beaten up willingly is because he's trying to surpass Shanks. It goes back to chapter 1 when Shanks didn't want to challenge Higuma in the bar, because there was nothing to gain from it, and nothing to be lost from not doing it. That's why he thinks of Shanks when Blackbeard claims Luffy won the fight.
