There's something off-putting about this chapter. Like posters before me have mentioned it's akward to build up a character by saying 'Pein beat the guy who beat all the Sannin'. It would have been easier and more interesting to have Pein in the place of Hanzou, that way they would have a little history together, Pein could have just remained nameless when they fought and it would build him up just as much.
Not sure what to make of Pein's 'Closet O' Dead People'. It could turn out to be a really interesting point that compliments his powers.
And as a side note, where the fuck is Zetsu? He could have just as easily spotted Jiraiya and teleported back to Pein. And c'mon, rain, plants, plants like water, the connection is there dammit.
I told this some days ago. I find that strange. We don't know nothing about Zetsu except one or two suport abilities. I always wonder if there's something behind his double personality. And Tobi was his subordinate before joining to Akatsuki. And if I remember correctly, he's the second most strong Akatsuki after Pain.
I really hope Zetsu puts up a really good fight before he dies. Same goes for Kisame and blue hair.

If you see well, except Sasori, the Akatsuki that were defeated hadn't any plot relevance, but the rest of Akatsuki: Pain, Zetsu, Itachi, Shounan, Tobi and Kisame. Those are the most strong and have an important plot relevance. Why? Lets see:
Pain: Akatsuki's leader and also the leader of Amegakure and defeated Hanzou, his enemy during the Civil War all by himself.
Zetsu: He acts like Pain's right arm and the other members treat him like a superior. He's power remains a mistery.
Itachi: The one who exterminated Uchiha clan and also Sasuke's brother. It's unknown what's his purpose.
Shounan: Pain's partner. Unknown headband. Need I say more?
Tobi: Revealed as Uchiha Madara and his intentions are different from Pain. Also the third Uchiha survivor.
Kisame: One of the Seven Swordsmans of Kirigakure. He also knows Suigetsu. It's a mistery why he joined to Akatsuki.
That's all. Read and make your own opinions.
The only one of those remaining one that has little relevance to the plot so far (outside the unknown for both Zetsu and Kisame) is Konan, considering she's so far just Pein's partner, a scout and….can control paper/origami. Besides, if her headband is just like Hidan's (from an unknown village we'll never know about), then it has no relevance to the story compared to the others. Maybe she could reveal something but it may be just as throwaway as Hidan's Jashin talk and Kakuzu fighting Shodai.
Though somehow I rather see her hosting latenight with "Hiruko the Insult Comic Scorpion", but that's me.
What is this "plot" you speak of?
If that's the case then we could see Blue Hair sacrifice herself during the Pein vs Jiraiya fight then Pein beats the living crud out of Jiraiya afterwards.

I don't think Pein's overhyped at all, it's just the way in which he was hyped that bothers me. There were a myriad of ways to do that better than Pein > Hanzou > Sannin.

I really hope Jiraiya has gotten considerably stronger, and Hanzou considerably weaker since that last encounter. Since otherwise...Jiraiya's doomed quickly.

My question: why the heck does every single ninja from Rain village (outside Pein) seem to use some weird watery or rain ability? The guy killed by Gaara used an umbrella for a weapon and those three who fought Naruto, not to mention Hanzou, have scuba masks! Heck, this seems to happen with a lot of the ninja from other villages to have an ability associated with it (Sand: Gaara, Grass: Zetsu, Mist: Zabuza using his mist abilities) and yet there isn't anyone in Leaf village…who uses leaves as an attack.
