I think many people are just waiting for Thorfinn to snap and return to his old ways. But maybe he'll become more like his father, using his strength to protect his friends and not just be a cold-blooded killer.
Throughout this month, we will be testing new features (like search) so you may experience some hiccups from time to time. We'll try to not be too disruptive...
Vinland Saga

Thorfinn snapping and eviscerating everyone would only be satisfying on a surface level. Because of the great pathos, you really can take it personally when people fuck with Thorfinn, so I can understand how it'd feel great to see him demolish shit. I know I enjoyed that punch. But his character has progressed and moved beyond that type of violence and it'd be uncharacteristic for him to just snap at this point. Or at least, from a storytelling perspective it seems unlikely. He's becoming a more mature individual, he's not the same kid he used to be.
I agree with Traveller. I believe that's where his character is heading.
I can see him still fighting of course, he has good reason to fight back now and kick ass. But it's a bit different.
I'm also not sure whether this encounter will end with them getting beat up, intervention, or Thorfinn getting back into the swing of things.
Farmland Saga has been really good for me, though, so I don't mind waiting patiently each month. I've been loving the arc and change of pace. I think in collected volume format it'll definitely feel faster too.
-
I honestly enjoy the everyday life of the Slave Arc to no end. Actually, it is one of Yukimura's strengths to write meaning behind simple things - just think of Planetes.
But of course, I wish to see how Thorfinn will move on. He has locked his warrior's skills and instincts deeply inside, but they still leak outside, and eventually will come out - only to meld with quite a new Thorfinn. However, we lack a bigger trigger for that. Out of the more simple premises, I see him being accepted into Snakes unit, or an invasion on Ketil's farm happening.
And I dearly miss Canute.
-
Thorfinn looks like a midget.

The artist needs to get his anatomy right. Not that I'm dissing the story or the rest of his artistic efforts.
-
Uhhhh
Looks
Pretty fine to me.
-
He looked just like Askleadd to me here.
-
@Sea:
I love the art, except for the eyes.
What don't you like about the eyes? They look decently realistic most of the time. Not that I pay much attention, but looking back at this most recent chapter, they seemed fine to me. If anything bothers me, it's how short these monthly releases feel. I swear we wait a lifetime for a new chapter– not nearly as bad as Berserk or HxH, I know-- and the chapter is done with in a flash.
-
These two chapters by mangashare finally made me read this. So far it meets my expectations. And because of what I read about Vinland Saga over the years my expectations were as high as could be. A second Berserk Golden Age arc basicly. I'm at the point Canute unites Thorkell and Askeladds armies and it's very much like Berserk right now. Right now I have to keep myself from looking up names on Wikipedia cause some articles there are spoilery for this manga.

His head is as long (vertically measuring) as his chest is wide.

I think I understand him. I don't like how the irises contract WITH the pupils when the character is angry. As a realistic manga, the irises should stay intact, with the pupils contracted.
Each to their own.

Ah, to be honest, that was the one and only thing I noticed that would be worth complaining about. Don't have much to reference right now though, so I figured I'd just ask instead of aimlessly searching.
-
Haha whut. This piece of highly dramaticized fiction told in the most fantastical medium of all is not adhering to the laws of reality! By jove, wait until the country club hears of this outrage!
-
You guys are ridiculous.

Thorkell has thrown a horse once.
Or so they say.

I think those are even more outrageous than the horse uppercut. Or at the same level.
Thorkell is too damn awesome. We need him back.

I am still catching up.
The eyes are too big for a seinen manga (while the eyeballs are small) I guess, especially in the early issues. Those eyes don't fit in well with the rest of the body, which are pretty realistic, IMO.
Apparently the art has improved. I just checked the recent issues and this problem has been reduced. -
There are rules to these things, dammit. Everything must conform to these arbitrary boxes I invented!

Heaven forbids men to have different taste.
-
Taste is fine, but there isn't a set "style" to seinen manga, or a series of guidelines that all of them abide by. In fact its one of the more inclusive descriptors you could use to describe manga, because the entire point is that grown-ups are not as picky as children and can understand and appreciate a much wider range of expression!
Berserk, Vinland, Hellsing and Naoki Urasawa are not the only things that are seinen.

Perhaps it was poor choice of phrasing. I apologize for the confusion. This isn't not really about seinen or shounen. It's about expression. For example, Hokuto no Ken is a shounen. I would replace " a seinen manga" with "the neat, realistic art of Vinland."
I feel the eyes in the early chapters of Vinland are out of place. The eyes in The World's mine are big too, but they fit right in with the outrageous style.
The art in Vinland is neat, but they eyes felt plastic, unrealistic, really lack something in artistic manner, a bit unfit, not to the genre, but to itself. The author seems to be aware of this and has improved his style.
Now I spoiled myself to check the recent chapters, I see the eyes have gotten more sufficient.
Still feel out of place sometime.
I really like the shading. With the eyes handled better, it could give some more depth.Berserk, Vinland, Hellsing and Naoki Urasawa are not the only things that are seinen.
And aren't really the most classic ones either.
–------
Here is an example of what I was talking bout, Snarf.
!
Same emotion. Same author. Different way of expression. Which one do you like better? Didn't the large eyes make the art a little too goofy?
In and of its self, the eyes have gotten smaller compared in the whole face structure.!
!
Which I like.
I am not telling you to like the author's choice in changing his style. It's up totally up to you.
But hey, would you sir, the refined grow up gentleman, mind making a little more constructive comment next time, instead of mocking remark to me? Not like I was at any point buthurt with the eyes. Just bugged me a tiny bit.–-----------------------------------------
Personally I am not a fan of the "detailedly shaded gritty characters with puppy eyes" style.
Talking about taste, I really dislike Gantz's art. It feels really plastic. Not that it's a quality manga anyway.Another series with good art but having out of place element would be Goodbye Shinsengumi. It's still good.
-
Man I just reached Askeladd's death. It's fabulous.
He just became my favourite cunning old man along with Retsudo. -
I don't know what you're talking about man, all those eyes look like the exact same size.
Anyways, this topic is pretty dumb. Vinland rules.
-

The ratio with the face got smaller.

A proper discussion about art from an artist? I don't think so. Though it's a very small problem with the series not wroth arguing over, it maybe useful.
Vinland rules.
I don't think anyone would disagree.
Just caught up BTW. -
-
I still can't see much of a problem with the eyes.
I never said it was much of a problem, not to mention a few panels cannot express what I felt while reading through out the series. To be honest you don't need to pay that much attention to the art. I did because I am an artist.
-
He voiced a reasonable personal opinion about the artwork and explained why he dislikes an aspect of it. People need to stop jumping up screaming "OMG, he insulted something I like, how dare he!" everytime someone criticizes something.
-
No I'm fine with that. Sea's a good artist. Naturally he will notice things I don't. And that was all I wanted to say. I don't see it. I'm not passing judgement on Sea.
-
I guess I will explain a bit further.
Look at your man:!
Now look at me:
!
Now back to your man.
Now back to me.
Do you feel something wrong with it?
Gritty character with big shiny eyes. Eh? Their faces are not feminine at all.
It's out of place. Especially in serious situation.
Thors's design always look a bit too goofy for me.
–-------------------------------------------------
With exaggerated eyes like these, it will be harder to take things seriously (note that these are taken from dead serious situations):!
These eyes can't convey serious emotions to the readers too well.
Especially when you know that old people's eyes cannot be as clear and shiny as young people. That is what I like about One Piece's eyes. Old people's eyes are rather small. Shanks's eyes has become smaller. Really sufficient. Really expressive.
!
In One Piece, exaggerated eyes and exaggerated faces fit well together.
Vinland's art sometime remind me of Fairy Tail's art. The artists control his lines too much, so it lack some freedom. Of course Vinland's art is far more better.
Makorov's shiny large eyes annoy me.!
-
The problem is, you're mixing indoor and outdoor lighting examples. While some of the examples show really big eyes and those are indeed ridiculous, a person's pupils tend to contract in lower light situations (read: inside) than outside. So it's normal for us to see larger pupils in outdoor scenes… While I don't know how closely this particular artist follows that rule, It seems he has increased his pupil/iris size a bit, so I can see why you're upset.
-
I am not upset LOL, just bugged a bit.
And baby face with big shiny eyes and facial hair is a really bad combination. He just looks too funny to be taken seriously. It's like a girl wearing a beard wig.!
This is a bishonen Rich Applause I drew to tease him, but it looked less awkward because I added a small roughness to the face and don't let the eyes open to large.
!
-
I'll be honest and add that I was a bit off put by the eye's in Vinland, and that mild judgement has delayed me from reading an awesome series.
When I get some free time, i'm definitely gonna sit down with this one.
-

It's worth your time.
I think Canute will die in Thorfinn's hands.
-
sea i agree a hundred percent with you the eyes bugged me a bit too i don't mind big shiny eyes but they don't really seem to fit in with the more realistic style of the rest of his art
-
You're mistaken, Sea.
Vinland Saga and it's main character, Thorfinn, are loosely based on the accounts from the real Vinland Saga, Saga of Eric the Red. Thorfinn Karlsefni, an explorer who tried to settle Greenland, went onto his expedition in the very beginning of the 11th century.
And here's the deal: in Denmark's history there were two kings by the name of Sweyn who were succeeded by sons named C(a)nut(e). Sweyn Forkbeard was succeeded by his son Harald while his other son Cnut was conquering England. It's precisely the situation we have now in the manga - Askellad killed Sweyn, Harald became king of Denamrk and Canute conquers Mercia. While Sweyn II and his son Canute IV lived in the latter half of the 11th century.
However, Yukimura, moved the events a little: real Throfinn went to Greenland during the reign of king Sweyn, while Thorfinn in the manga will most likely go after Canute becomes king. -

LOL, somebody just fixed the article about Thorkell The Tall in Wikipedia. That's quick.
According to a description of Cnut found within the 13th-century Knýtlinga sagaKnut was exceptionally tall and strong, and the handsomest of men, all except for his nose, that was thin, high-set, and rather hooked. He had a fair complexion none-the-less, and a fine, thick head of hair. His eyes were better than those of other men, both the handsomer and the keener of their sight.
It seem Yukimura kept the "handsomest" part.
But it's likely that he has got stronger. In 1021, though, Jarl Thorkell fell out with king Canute
This seems to be what will happen.
http://www.dur.ac.uk/medieval.www/sagaconf/kruhoffer.htmI am looking forward to the manga version of the "Sea, I command you to come no farther." story. The screen time that crown got serve more purpose than I thought.

http://www.dur.ac.uk/medieval.www/sagaconf/kruhoffer.htmConsidering that Yukimura must have had a reason to move the dates, it is likely. If that bit with Canute in Mercia had a purpose, it was probably foreshadow the continuation of the english campaign. That stage is pretty much set, and what is left is create a plot link for Thorfinn to get from danish farmlands to english battlefield. However, with his gradual change, Thorfinn might be not willing to keep on fighting and even escape the conflict leading to conflicts of other sort. Well, that we have yet to see.

Definately a Yukimura scene here. If the mangaka has done his research - and that a solid "yes" - this story will be implemented in some way, to further the development of Canute.
-
Caught up with this series. Pretty awesome. Askellad is like one of the greatest characters ever!!! Not minding this change in pace. I'm sure there will be a sweet, sweet payoff in the end. I miss sexy Canute though:(
-
As musch as I miss long, long hair of Canute, beard is a worthy, worthy trade off.
-
Chapter 70 is out on mangastream.
Unfortunately, it's a very quick read.
-
quite a disappointing chapter thorfinn seem to have snapped in the bad way
-
This is going on a Vagabond-esque route. I am kinda stuffed with the main characters wondering about the meaning of violence.
-
@Aegir:
This is going on a Vagabond's route. I am kinda stuffed with the main characters wondering about the meaning of violence.
Once I saw him give up I figured these little self reflection/realization would inevitably ensue.
He's gonna eventually find a reason to live and something to fight for.
With both manga things like that usually happen when the main characters live in a time of peace.
-
This chapter was made in Yukimura's style to the core. Subtle, yet strong and gritty. I really enjoyed the dream and Valhalla and can't help but wait for more.
On the Musashi compairison, I view Thorfinn's situation diferently - whereas Musashi has chosen the path of the blade himself and only later began to stray from it onto a new one, Thorfinn was pretty much forced to stride the road of war. Therefore their answers will differ.
Besides, Vagabond on unlimited hiatus.
-
Not the best chapter, but certainly a necessary one. Seeing Yukimura's interpretation of Valhalla was really cool, as was seeing Einar coming out as quite the tough little badass.
Also, this chapter answers an important question: Do Ex-Warriors Dream of Icelandic Sheep?
-
And chapter 71 follows.
Yukimura excels in this territory, that's one of her main grounds - to depict the inner thoughts and struggles. And such presentation, as this surreal Valhalla, only makes it better.
Thorfinn finally comes to a conclusion, may be an obvious one, may be not, but a logical and true one either way. This is the first step for him to take over the apthy, to find a wish to live and search for a dream, for a purpose.
I can't feel anything else than excitement for this and the coming chapters.
-
So he is going to become an explorer?
-
Yeah.
Despite how much Yukimura will keep the plot close to the historic accounts, she's going to make Thorfinn the first explorer of American continent. But for a slave today to come in such a position tomorrow, a long way lies ahead. A path, full of stuggle and fight, I reckon.
-
So the Musashi/Guts route eh?
Boo, I want my blood-thirsty Thorfinn back.
And sexy Kanute while you're at it… -
So the Musashi/Guts route eh?

Greenland may be one of the points that might not be historically accurate. Cause it used to be kind of empty when the Norse landed. Or the map is missing some cultures. Maybe he transfers some Inuit there.
