Open Source Fansub ?

hi everyone,

i wanted to get your opinion on something:

fansub teams don't give their scripts because they want to keep credit maybe? or they don't want their work stolen (it can be stolen very easily)
or maybe another reason that i didn't figure out for i'm not in a team

vegapunk give their scripts to give one piece access to a max number of people (i'm already seeing french and asian languages thanks to vp) (btw i look forward to their forum online soon or a section here)

also it gives a lot of options, among them using different raws (720p, hd, sd) depending on everyone's expectations and capabilities, accessiblity, etc

what do you prefer and do you think this open source idea will help in the future the anime fansub system in general? of course it's the team's choice in the end but it's just a question

this is not a complain or an attack or anything negative it's just asking for opinion, i appreciate every work done by anyone on one piece

Yes, I also don't see any reason why other fansubs don't provide their scripts, it would benefit the anime community in general.

In our case, there are already at least 6 translations I know, and more in progress, it will help spread One Piece around the world for those that don't want to or don't understand the english language episodes.

We chose to be a open fansub so everyone could contribute and everyone could see One Piece in the better way they like (HD, FS, etc…), this way everyone can be happy. :)

I already said in another thread but I will say it again, if you are afraid of other people stealing your work, it is already possible, using SubRip in OCR mode I can currently get a full script with perfect or almost perfect timings and translations in less than an hour, including hand editing some errors that may slip in the OCR.

Please reflect about this, and I hope in the future we will see more open fansubs.

Not totally fair to say that there is not reason for keeping scripts private. Fansubbing is an ego driven activity. When fansubbers fansub, appreciation is their only reward. If their scripts are taken and a better encoding is done with their work, people will stop downloading their encodings. And that may hurt some people. So I see it as matter of maturity. There's also the matter that even if you are fine with that your team may be not, people doesn't take that into account usually. You have a lot of people working in your team and you have to consider their feelings too, they could even leave the team in disappointment and that would, in turn, be worse on the long term for everybody. Also consider the average age of a fansubber.

Having said that, in the end releasing scripts is only better for the users. Take the first 10 episodes of K-F for example. They are low quality encodings, if they had released the scripts somebody would have taken care of encoding them in h264 with dvd-rips. The same goes for us, if Blu-ray rips of the current episodes turn out to have better quality than current HD raws in two years someone will be able to use our scripts to encode them so people will stop using our encodings. Will we regret it? No. We would rather thank them and link, even seed those encodings if needed. In fact if they are nice guys and keep the credits we will be reaching more people.

Btw, there's 12 translations in the work for vegapunk scripts that we know of counting softsubs and hardsubs. Swedish, turkish, dutch, spanish, portuguese, french, italian, german, norge, arab, bengali and hindi… and I think I forgot some. That wouldn't be possible without softsubs.

We plan to release softsubs from now till the end of one piece. You can say our main goal is assisting translations of one piece. We don't care much about english subs in the long term since k-f is gonna do it anyway. Accesibility is another reason too.
