Man what are the odds. I was sick home and I turned the TV to CNN and i watched from when the White smoke started to when the new Pope was elected. At this moment I'm watching it live.
So what do you think Pope Benedict the 16th will do? Any predictions? There's so many things to come. :lol:
Joseph Ratzinger is new Pope.
He won't do anything new. He's just as conversative (if not more so) than John Paul II. Besides, he's 78. He will not be as mobile as John Paul II or as personable. Honestly, I'd call him a "transition Pope" who will be around for a couple of years, die, and then replaced by a much younger Pope.

I think they choosed a old pope because they wont last as long as Pope John Paul did.
Actually, just after JP II died, I think there was some discussion on CNN about that and most likely there would be an older Pope so as not to have the same 20 year reign as John Paul II.
The hypocrisy of all of this is, Cardinals are supposed to retire at age 75. How is this guy even still working as a Cardinal, let alone be named the Pope? It's just further proof that he is one of JP II's old cronies.

Actually, Cardinals retire at 80, not 75. Once you turn 80, you aren't eligible for the Papacy any longer…
Before I remember hearing the news saying there was a rumor of having a hidden cardinal in China. (He was appointed 3 years ago or so.) Everything was unknown except the fact he's from mainland China. Rumor also said his name is hidden so that China won't kill him for doing religious activities. Rumor also said John Paul II wanted him to be the next Pope.
Did they ever find out who he was? … Or was it a rumor only among Japanese? >.>;

True. I confuse their retirement age with that of a Bishop all of the time. Bishops have to retire at 75. Cardinals at 80. But the point remains, he ain't going to be around for too long.

I can believe the idea of a Chinese Cardinal in secret but never heard anything definite. But it's no suprise this Pope is white in all honesty. I don't think the Church is ready for a different kind of Pope. Maybe in another generation.

Actually, I heard that too. He was named in secret so that the Chinese government wouldn't execute him. Only John Paul II knew his name. However, when they read his will, they didn't find any mention of a name. JP II said "Today, I name 4 cardinals, one of them is in my heart"
It's unlikely that this mystery cardinal will be able to come forward. We may never know who it is…

Eh, just think of him as a King of… um... Catholic people. And when he sits on his throne, he's the "voice" of God and never wrong. So he's kind of a combination of Sauraman and Emperor Palpatine.

The more I think about it, the more it bothers me that the new Pope was a Hitler Youth. Whether it was of his own volition or not, and whether it's something he has put behind him or not - it just reeks of bad taste to me. It's tactless, and even offensive.

Thank you Cap'n Carter. I actually was raised Catholic, and while I don't practice the relgion anymore…the propaganda going around about the new pope has lead to some uninformed stereotypes about Catholicism. As far as the Pope goes, after talking to my Jewish friend who is knowledgable about the Holocaust subject, she claims that the Hitler youth group was something all German boys were forced to join, it wasn't a choice. The Pope would have been 14 at the time, and he apparently deserted as soon as he could. He's no hero or martyr, that's for sure, but again...he was a kid trying to survive in Nazi Germany. Whether or not he trult believed in the Nazi traditions...the evidence seems to point to no. I don't know the man, so I can't say for sure. But the bottom line is, it's possible.
However...I will admit that he does look creepy. And...just to lighten this a little bit...

I really couldn't care less what he thinks about redemption since its not his decision to make.
I'm more worried about his stance on issues like homosexuality, birth control, and female leadership in the church. Things aren't looking so good on those fronts.
As a young, progressive Catholic woman (whew, what a label!), I'm scared. Hopefully, Benedict XVI's reign will be very short and give way to someone more open-minded.
Fun fact about his Holiness: as the enforcer of the offical, 100% God-certified doctrine, Ratizinger was harsh and super-conservative, handing out punishment to those who didn't agree with the Church's stances on birth control and the place of women within the church. They called him "God's rottweiler." NICE.
(PS: I know a whole lot more about than most lay people my age do. If anyone has any questions, just ask. If you can't tell, I really love discussing religion. :D)

Cyclone - Uh, no. All young men in Germany were forcibly made to join the Hitler Youth, and from there could platform up to Nazi. There's a huge difference between the two; do not confuse the Hitler Youth with the Nazis. Get your facts straight before you throw down ignorance.
As for me, well… I was baptized Catholic but I'm pretty much atheist by all accounts. I can appreciate the Pope for who he is, but it's just kind of an 'oh, wow, er, yay Italy' deal for me personally. Just how it is.

I don't know about your catholic community, but mine saw him about on the same level as the president. By no means a living god, and open to discussion about his policies. It's weird how things vary from place to place like that, even in a religion that's supposed to not change.
even though hes freaky looking and has a funny past… i like his policys on homosexuality and the womens role in the church.
