It’s one of things that sucked about the later parts of Green Jacket and almost everything that came afterwards.
Throughout this month, we will be testing new features (like search) so you may experience some hiccups from time to time. We'll try to not be too disruptive...
Lupin the 3rd
-
-
Okay
! The chronology of pirate king Zeke bothers me A LOT.
-
Discotek announced some Lupin stuff today. They will be releasing Lupin, Part 1 and Lupin the 3rd: Episode 0 - First Contact on bluray. Both will have a english dub with the current Lupin dub cast.
-
Also a new Mamo blu-ray in March.
-
Episode 0 with a new dub? Well, guess I'll have to get that.
The DREAM is for them to someday do Cagliostro but given they already did a super deluxe release of that and it already had two existing dubs on it, there's no way to ever really justify it.
Fuma conspiracy maybe?
-
I got Lupin the 3rd: Blood Seal of the Eternal Mermaid dvd for Christmas. I really enjoy the speical and the Lupin dub were really great in the special. Of the Lupin film/specials that I have seen, the intro scene for this special have to be one of my favorite so far.
-
Discotek announce that the blu ray release of Lupin, Part 1 is coming out in May. Also Lupin the 3rd, "Prison of the Past" blu ray release is coming out later this year.
-
So Part VI ended yesterday, I enjoyed quite a bit the two story arcs, but there two episodic episodes that I would scrap. And
! Double meassures
!
-
Need to get back into Part VI.
It hasn't been a bad season (although I think the other two "modern" seasons have been better), but I just can't seem to stick with it for some reason. -
Really was disappointed by part 6 especially after how much I adored part 5.
! Never in my life did I want to see a storyline where Lupin is programmed to betray his friends through assassin brainwashing taking away any agency he had. Lupin is the character whose supposed to always be in control even when things look dire, he should always have his wits about him and witty banter to throw at his foes. I will give credit that the finale alleviated some of my problems a little but ehhhhh
! Also the season was so full of worthless filler episodes. And yeah they tried to clumsily tie them together in the last two episodes, it didn't make them any less boring. I was really hyped because I was expecting Sherlock to be a bigger presence in the part but his stuff was wrapped up like half way through.
! There are a few stand out episodes and good scenes and character arcs and ideas but overall, worst part in a long while. -
Hey uh… spoiler tag that stuff.
I'm not watching the show till its dubbed.
You know better. I'm pretty sure I told you the same thing last season.
-
Any idea when it could be released somewhere else other than Highdive?
-
Lupin Part 6 is going to be airing on Toonami starting April 16th.
-
Also, the dub will air on Highdive https://www.hidive.com/news/2022/4/13/you-now-know-when-you-can-watch-the-lupin-the-3rd-part-6-english-dub-on-hidive
-
Part VI is getting a dub here, which makes it one of the few pieces of the Lupin catalogue dubbed in portuguese.
-
Since it just finished airing on Toonami, here's my thoughts on episode 0.
! This was a great Jigen focused episode. I know, this episode is pretty much a tribute episode to Jigen's original Japanese actor as this episode is his final performance for the series. The scene between Zenigata and Jigen was a really great moment as well the scene with Lupin and Goemon talking about what if Jigen leaving or not. To me this feel like a really good classic Lupin episode. The english dub cast for Lupin are great as usual.
-
The Lupin in France girl is way less annoying than the i'm gonna out-Lupin Lupin girl from the Italy run. A bit raunchier than i'd expect from a Lupin show, but it's been pretty great for the first five eps.
-
I've been watching part VI subbed on highdive. Supposedly the dub is on there, but I haven't found it?
So far I like part V better, but it has its moments.
-
I'm enjoying the dub for Part 6 so far. In my opinion, Part 6 is good so far. But it's going to be hard to top Part 5 for me.
-
Funny thing right when the board came back. I just gotten The Secret of Twlight Gemini on bluray the other day. For the first time seeing the special, I really enjoyed it. I thought the Funimation dub for the special was pretty good in my opinion. But I still mostly prefer the main dub cast of the Lupin (Part 1, Part 4 - Part 6 cast).
-
Stuff I got for my birthday.
-
Really nice pick up.
-
Man i wish i could find a region free bluray player so i could pick up that dubbed version of part 1. And all the other goodies that's coming out.
-
First Contact even has a new dub, I'm looking forward to it.
Hopefully they someday give red jacket the same treatment. I have doubts considering there's still 80 episodes left... but I never thought Green Jacket would be dubbed so.... of course, they probably wouldn't semi- gag dub it as loosely as they did and it would be a stricter translation.
-
Man. Stupid region coding ruining my collecting. I absolutely need to watch the dub of first contact. Then they can go ahead and dub part 2, and then part 3. Imagine a gag dub to the visual nightmare that is pink jacket. What a ride it'd be
-
-
Tubi tv added the dub of Lupin Part 5 and the dubs of some Lupin Specials for free to stream.
These are the specials that Tubi got.
Lupin the Third: Bye Bye, Lady Liberty
Lupin the Third: The Columbus Files
Lupin the Third: Crisis in Tokyo
Lupin the Third: Island of Assassins
Lupin the Third: Dragon of Doom -
Y'know what, out of that batch lady liberty is probably my favorite. And it's one of the few where i think the non-red jacket dub team did a good job. Even if wolf the third is a bit wonky
-
I watched Bye Bye, Lady Liberty last night. I thought the special was decent for the first tv special. From the specials that I watch I think Blood Seal of the Eternal Mermaid, Napoleon's Dictionary, and Voyage to Danger were best ones so far. I have to say it's nice that Pluto tv, Retro Crush, and Tubi have a lot of the Lupin movies and tv specials up for streaming now.
-
Despite the two plotlines feeling very loosely connected lady liberty has some great spectacle, lots of goofy moments like the exploding bath duckies, the opening jetpack chase, anytime Zenigata gets into a cab etc. And it has a decent grasp on how i think the characters should interact, Jigen is his own man running his own operations and when they team up they have an equal partnership. Never liked when they had Jigen be totally subservient to Lupin like he was his henchman. Same with Fujiko who doesn't just live to screw over Lupin but keeps busy doing her own heists and Goemon keeps trying to do samurai stuff and being stoic despite struggling hard. And that gag where Goemon communicates entirely in nonsensical made up sayings just cracks me up. And out of the many many MANY Goemon meets a girl who turns out to be bad romances this one is one of the better working ones. In general good action scenes, lots of running gags that worked for me, the kid character isn't even that annoying and the gang is in-character. After a re-watch i find myself thinking of it as one of the better ones
-
I watch Lupin the Third: The Columbus Files yesterday. It's a really good Fujiko focus special. Now that have seen a couple specials with the Funimation cast (The Funimation dub specials that I seen were Secret of Gemini Treasure, The Columbus File, and Crisis in Tokyo.). I don't really mind them that much, but I still prefer the main English dub cast of the tv series and the current movies and specials.
-
Hmm columbus file, is that the one with amnesia Fujiko, an extra rapey Lupin and like a nuclear hulk thing at the end? I think that's the one that has like four alternative titles. Not a fan if i recall right, but maybe it'll seem better on a re-watch
-
The next Lupin animated project have been announced, It's going to be a crossover with the classic Shonen Jump series, Cat's Eye. As a fan of both Lupin and Cat's Eye, I'm really excited for this movie. I hope this movie gets a english dub and the actresses who voice's Cat's Eye crew from the recent City Hunter movie to return and voice them for this. Here's teaser trailer for this crossover.
-
Oh god my eyes. Who greenlit that art.
-
I am not digging it. At all.
I understand the industry is sliding towards CG that they're trying to make look 2D because its cheaper, but it just doesn't ever look right or nearly as good.
I don't know the Cats Eye franchise at all... did they slide the Lupin designs over to closer match that in style?
(They didn't really bother with the Detective Conan crossovers)
-
They look about the same as they did in the latest city hunter film. Not familiar with them beyond their cameo tho.
-
I'll be going into this crossover with a open mind. I'm just happy that we're getting more Cat's Eye content. I highly recommend the Cat's Eye tv series, It's a fun series. I will say that I like the Cat's Eye crew new thieves outfits for this crossover, it's way better then their thieves outfits from the 2nd season of the tv series.
-
Plotwise i'm sure it'll at worst be no worse than any other Lupin meets X plot. But the art is gonna be a hurdle, it looks actively wrong.
I've been keeping up with a youtuber named cloudconnections retrospective on the Lupin specials/movies and he just watched the hemmingway papers, and i just had to re-watch it. And it's somewhat better than i remembered it, still full of go nowhere plots and weird set ups, and an absolute shoehorning off Zenigata who has no bearing on the plot at all. But the animation is less janky than i remembered, and this new translation helps make certain things clear. I still hate that song they keep playing on the jukebox tho. And the whole playing two sides against each other thing could've been so much more interesting than it was. But like maybe a solid C is the proper rating for this one in hindsight. And crazy mash is still the best silly villain name in lupin history. Just the right amount of dumb
-
Oh neat, I may have to watch those. I don't know that I'll ever have the time, energy or inclination to rewatch all the old Lupin stuff, it took me 20 years to get through it once! (Its easier now with modern internets compared to bootleg VHSes picked up at conventions though.) Someone doing an in depth retrospective and having thoughts on the things may be a better way to go.
I did pick up the blu rays for green and pink jacket for my birthday and should get to those at some point. When episodes are 20 minutes its okay if a premise is a little thin or its a mmiss compared to a full movie that isn't nailing it. Plus the shows had consistent teams that figured their stuff out. movies could be all over the place.
I still need to watch the new season of blue jacket now that the whole dub is out.
-
Lupin coming to a McDonalds near you... maybe.

It is great fun for a lupinatic like myself. Good production values, good enough speaking voice and a nice structured breakdown style. And it really makes you feel like re-watching it. I never thought i'd voluntarily pick up hemmingway papers again but here we are

Such an out of character moment for Goemon,
Its ENTIRELY in character for Goemon to have finally gotten a new thing that is actually 15 years old and be super proud of himself for understanding it and wanting to show off.

Putting that way, yes it fits perfectly.

Lupin in general is kind of wonky because its on a sliding timescale of it clearly started in the 70s but also is taking place in modern day. Like you look at the very first tv movie they did, Bye Bye Liberty Crisis mamde in 1989, and they make a big deal about the computers and flopped disks and stuff and time has just made a real fool out of their high tech in that one.
Cut forward to the more recent stuff and they have proper cell phones and laptops and use the internet... because of course they do, but I remember the FIRST time I saw them doing that it was really weird. They even had to add a new member to their crew specifically to handle internet and hacking stuff. Because sure Lupin's always been able to do hacking before, but they needed someone to do HACKING.
I suppose time will tell if Ami gets included again or if she remains a one-off for series five the same way Lupin's "wife" was only series four. I still haven't seen series six but my understanding is she isn't in it.
-
I recently watched Island of Assassins. I have to say it's one of my top favorite Lupin movie/tv specials now. I admit, I didn't expected some of that happen in the special.
Here is my ranking of the Lupin movies/Specials that I watch.
- Mystery of Mamo
- Island of Assassins
- Napoleon's Dictionary
- Blood Seal of the Eternal Mermaid
- Castle of Cagliostro
- Crisis in Tokyo
- Voyage to Danger
- The Secret of Twilight Gemini
- The Columbus Files
- Bye Bye, Lady Liberty
-
Interesting choices, you have a lot of what you might call the lesser rated movies on your top ten. I don't personally get the mermaid one, but the other four in your top five are all good ones.
-
My Top 3
Castle of Cagliostro-my favorite movie, period. Not just Lupin, not just animated, favorite movie. I have bought like 9 different copies of this thing over the years.
Fuma Conspiracy-Great romp, best car chase sequence in the franchise
Episode 0-Great origin movie. Great character moments, great animation, great retelling of various earlier bits, and an amazing brick joke. Then there ones I haven't watched in years or have only seen once. I'll revisit them someday but these are the ones I have marked as being good.
Napoleon's Dictionary-I remember this fondly as a character piece that broke the formula but everyone else seems to have midling opinions on it so I really need to revisit it.
Walther p-38/Island of Assassins- stylish and cool looking and Cowboy Bebop-esque, not the greatest plot
Princess of the Breeze-overall solid outing
Alcatraz Connection-needed to be 10 or 15 minutes longer then it would have been one of the greats, but it resolved its villains a little too fast and tidy at the last second but it was fantastic until then
Tokyo Crisis- The first Lupin movie I ever saw, possibly the first Lupin period, so it gets bonus points. Great Zenigata film.
Voyage to Danger-super dramatic, great once, not so great a second time. Still really good the first time though.I'm REALLY glad I liked Princess of the Breeze because I saw so many in a row that were just eh I thought I might be numbed to the franchise that I enjoy so much but then that one was a super solid outing. I only saw that one last year I think though it was from 2013.
The BAD list
Gold of Babylon - Pink Jacket at its worst and most on drugs
Burn, Zantetsuken! / Dragon of Doom I saw this one right after 9/11 so the evil scheme of having an invincible airplane that you flew into buildings kind of... not good.
The Pursuit of Harimao's Treasure (It's a big build up to the pun Herr Maphrodite)
From Russia with Love- Just super silly villain in Rasputin? he killed people with his tongue. Was red jacket, but very Pink Jacket in tone. There's still a tiny tiny handful of movies I haven't gotten to yet because I just have no desire to since its the people that did the Fujiko series that I really hated, nor did I like Daisuke Jigen's Gravestone... so I just have no desire to do the other two movies from the same team.
And I haven't gotten to Prison of the Past yet from 2019, or the CGI film, but I've seen almost everything else. I tend to go in spurts where I watch nothing for years then do five or six movies in a week.
I think all the episodes of the shows but I was using VHS bootlegs 25 years ago and out of sequence for a lot so its entirely possible I've missed chunk of pink jacket. I just got the blu ray for green jacket and pink jacket so I'll eventually revisit them both.
ANd I guess I still need to see the new season of blue jacket now that its been dubbed.
