Crewmembers in the final phase of acquiring One Piece

I was looking at a recent chapter and someone

! Ace mentioned that they intended to make their captain Kaizoku-Ou.

It occured to me though, if you have a crew of any size, wouldn't the odds be in favour of at least one, and possibly several members deciding to betray you at the last moment? The treasure is so awesome as to have practically created modern piracy, and with the right motivation, any degree of nakamaness can be worn down.

Possible discussion:

Could this torpedo someone like Whitebeard (who obviously has a fairly numerous crew)'s chances of becoming Pirate King?

Who would be the betrayer in the Mugiwara? Nami's the obvious choice, but Robin could be (if it turns out that there's a clash over the historical value of the treasure) or even Usopp (if it's necessary to prove to the world he's a brave man)

How do you defend against this? Send off a single man in a small boat to Raftel? Attempt to vet and purge your ranks the closer you get?

Well, the mere fact that Roger was the only one to obtain One Piece, the general consensus is that whatever One Piece is, it's not valuable to anyone but whoever carries the mantle of Pirate King. But hell, for all we know, it may be something that Roger personally was proud of.

That's why I'm strongly advocating some kind of Ancient Guardian bestowing "One Piece" on to the Pirate King rather than it being something simply accumulated. If Reaching Raftel, being the strongest, and being the wealthiest was all it took, then it would seem to me that everyone would betray everyone else when they got close to it.

Just as if Mihawk refused to fight someone they couldn't claim his title, if this Guardian did not deem the person worthy of fighting him, then One Piece could not be awarded.

It's all speculation, but we really have no understanding of how Roger became Pirate King or if One Piece is simply a nickname for the effort he exerted or a tangible treasure.

I think in the end when they actually find Gold Roger's stash spot, they're going to find a note that says they couldn't have made it this far with a handicap, that the greatest treasure of all is the nakama they needed in order to be able to get here, and congratulations on making it in _one piece._

That kinda seems like a cop out tho. One Piece being the journey of Nakama and such seems kinda lame. If Oda wants to please everybody, make One Piece tangible and intangible if u get what I'm saying.

Yeah. The "Journey is the prize" is cliche and really overdone.

I could see it being a trivial token, or a sentimental item, or my favourite, a single 1-beli coin, but 'It's your Nakama' will officially make me wish that Buggy or Smoker had done a little better in Loguetown.
