Looks like the Dragon Quest's Next Installment will be on the DS, huh? Well all I can say is, I hope this does live up to XIII, but other than that, I am having high hopes for this upcoming DS Title.
The trailer looks good, traditional monsters like the slime and others are intact, all I can say is, consider this one on my wishlist when it comes out =D

I'm not happy about this game.
The primary reason I love the Dragon Quest series is because they have been able to stick to the original, classic routes of RPGing as no other series has.
However, they are subject to the "Let's Ruin Our Series and Make it an Action RPG for more money" just as the FF series is.
Until I hear something that redeems this game, DQVIII will forever be the "final Dragon Quest" in my mind.
Looks fun. I can't wait.
Indeed. Also Dragon Quest Swords is one of the Wii titles I'm actually looking forward to along with SSB:B, Super Paper Mario, Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3.
Bumping because it's not a matter of time ebfore release date is finally out and I have noticed something rather weird.
According to this scan, it'll still be the traditional kind of fighting style as other games were but the earlier kinds of trailers had the "Action FFXII" style combat while this scan has the traditional kind of combat in it. and so does the official website. Does it mean this game will have options for both people who prefer going traditional or those who for some reason want the non traditional combat system?
Yeah, I think there was news about that… like many many weeks ago. It will be traditional, the whole action aspect backfired I guess. Got a lot of fans pissed off.

Oh, then I probably should have bumped this thread weeks earlier I found this out. XD But good to hear they're keeping it traditional.
I'm not sure what they're doing, but I'm sure it'll be great no matter what.

The day Akira Toriyama stops doing Dragon Quest designs will be the day Yuji Horii leaves the franchise behind (ie., Sakaguchi & Uematsu/Mistwalker).

I heard about the switch back to the traditional style a while ago. Dragon Quest is a franchise that I've always wanted to play more of, but I only own the first game and a demo of the eighth. I'm probably going to buy this whenever it comes out.

What the hell are you talking about, you? That is a thumbnail, there's a fairly large picture of all of the characters in the bottom right.
As for them, they all look quite boring to me really..but design is only half (or less) of the character.

I bought the first game a while ago, but haven't played it much recently. I do intend to collect the next three games eventually, though.

Well, there are a couple screenshots that show a character creation system, so that art is just meant to show the basic classes, most likely. Chances are they won't be focusing as much on the characters as the gameplay, which is fine by me.

Series character designer Akira Toriyama is lending his talents to the design of the costumes
so he is not designing the charicters, but he is designing the costumes. so, they have a different designer for the charicters? that seems kind of silly. I wish they would have elaborated on that statement.
It's probably a typo. (I consider using wrong words a typo, along with mis-spelling a word.)
The series still uses almost entirely Toriyama's designs regardless.
Monsters, generic characters, etc.
Plus, in the customization screen, a lot of the faces were typical of his style.

I like Toriyama's designs, but the characters in VIII were probably my favorites in terms of appearance. The main character looked alot like teen Gohan from Dragonball Z.

Sounds great, but I wonder if it'll be like Crystal Chronicles (where you could play the same game solo or multiplayer) or a completely different thing for multiplayer. Probably something completely different if they're keeping turn-based combat…

Truth be told, I'm actually starting to prefer RPGs on hand held consoles. I don't always have the time or interest to play it my room on my PS2 but on a portable I can play it where I want. That's mainly why I've never completed VIII. I enjoyed it, but lacked the motivation to play it on my PS2.
Anyway, I'm really keen with this game. I like the idea of being able to design your own hero and generally interested in what I've heard so far.

Huh? I thoght the nameless character was the main one. Yeah, Angelo looks alot like Trunks. And I could've sworn I saw one background character who looked like Vegeta.

Angelo's brother looks a hell of a lot like Vegeta, so that must be who you were talking about. I think his name was Marcello or something.
It's Toriyama's style, he just seems to like to change clothes and hair around. Morrie is basically a less muscular Mr. Satan when you look at him, and Super High Tension on Hero is basically Super Saiyan.
The only character in DQ8 I think doesn't resemble anyone is Yangus.
That Super High Tension rubbish was added in for the US game. I guess so retards could be like "HE'S LIKE SSJ GOKU" and run out and buy the game.

Speaking of character customization, DQ9 looks like it'll be going back to the old school methods of the older DQ games in terms of characters. The customization with stats is not only back probably, but customization of looks from what I noticed. Gives me a nostalgic kind of feeling from playing the old DQ Games like DQ III.

That's very true, yet it's so ironic that he's the one getting the most criticism for that. I blame Dragon Ball's popularity for that though. Granted, if he only did Dragon Quest or was a new artist in the scene, others might think differently of him. That's all just theory though.

The command-based system is used even during the game's four-player network mode. When engaging in combat alongside real life allies, each player sees the same view of the battle scene on the top screen of their DS system. Players select their commands individually on the bottom screen. You're free to discuss moves with fellow players, or you can make decisions on your own. The game informs you of your fellow players' choices regarding target and type of move.
