this is one of the coolest mangas. it is about this notebook that when u write someone's name in it, they die.
it has awesome incredibly smart plots and its just amazing

Death Note is one crazy acid trip of wittiness. I love it. It's not too complicated in terms of personalities, but I admit finding the constantly thrilling battles of wits to be irresistable.
Stuff.
I read chapter 31 & 32 last night. Holy crap! I have never laughed so hard at a manga in my life, chapter 31 > page 16 > 3rd panel. :o  I love Misa & all, but damn, I would've socked her one too.
Yeh, this is a really unique jump manga. Very smart & always enthralling, though sometimes L's tests become to much, the endless game of cat & mouse between Raito & L sometimes push the limits of my patients.
I love this series. Besides One Piece, this is the only series where I bought the japanese tanks. Light has all these crazy plans that tend to work out. You never know what is going to happen because it is just…..I dunno how to explain it.
Great manga I was Hooked after Chapter I read chapter 1.Its diffrent from the mangas of jump
I've read chapters 1-56 so far. I love the battles of wits between Raito and L. (L is the coolest IMO.) It's indeed the freshest manga I've read in a while.

Then consider the fact that you've now learned of existence to be a message from above that you should go read it right now! It's one of the best-executed manga series out there at the moment, and the fanscanners are pretty much right behind the Japanese release (56 chapters in English, with 57 total so far).
Why does everyone call Light, Raito. It says "Light"

Because to an English speaker, "Light" sounds dorky. Not to mention that the fanscanners were using "Raito" for like 30-40 chapters, so people got used to that. I prefer to use "Light" as well, but it's just hard to think of it as a name.
Not to me.
I've read past vol.4. I know the scanlation group I read with, eventually changes it to "Light" but it's Raito at the moment.
Death Note is one of my favorite series right now, heh. The Yotsuba arc kinda seemed like it was dragging on, but then the plot jumped right back to where it was before, and it's just as amazing as ever. =p
Errr… To get into spoilers here...
Misa is pretty much guaranteed to die sometime soon, now that she's given up 3/4s of her life... I hope she doesn't find out L's name again and then die right then. That'd kinda suck. >_>
Yeah, the Yotsuba arc seemed pretty dragged out to me too. I'm not really liking Light without his whole killing intent attitude. You know when the manga is starting to get good when you see his eyes with that evil tint of his :P
Ah, last I read to was around chapter 26 (couldn't find anymore at the time and forgot about it). It's an interesting read indeed where I guess your morals and ideals start to kick in and you wonder if the main character's really good or not because of what he thinks is right and wrong. Well, from what I read. I ought to continue off where I left off. But yes, it's good.
Not exactly my cup of tea though. I find it deals with more of a outsmarting kind of aspect to it, outwitting per se. Hmm, yeah, can't find the right words. But anyways, good stuff.
Oh, uh, does it plan to end anytime soon? Out of curiousity.

It's not 3/4 of her life, actually, because for the eye exchange you lose 1/2 of the remainder of your lifespan. Like if your lifespan is 60 years, and you exchange when you're 20, your new death age won't be 30 (half of 60) but 40 (20+half of what's left).
But still she can drop dead any time now O_o;
I'm so glad that evil!Light is back. The whole Yotsuba fiasco is quite left field. The part I like best about DN is when Light and L tries to outwit each other. Of course after a while it got a bit stale, but putting Misa in the picture as a balance shifter heated up the plot.
And just curious, whose side are you on? Light or L?

Yeah, Misa's probably got at least 10 years left, if not more. And by then, the series will probably be over with some happy ending involving her getting her lifespan back.

Take a wild guess. I'm sure it'll be hard. I mean, it's not like answer is staring you in the face or anything. If you still need a hint: it's not the one who's a complete freaking bastard.
i;m kinda on L's side cuz he's just cooler than light but i wanna see what light does but i dont want L TO DIE!!!!!!
but misa rocks.
yeah, death note is definitely one of the more original mangas in recent memory.

Because we didn't know official name spelling until the volume was released in Tanko. I believe WTF changed it to Light recently.
By the way, can I advertise? Read Toriyama's World version of Death Note, too! It has right name spellings. I'm scanning for them from ch5 and on, though, they haven't been released yet… I wonder why I rushed to scan them in -__-

You mean the gal :) Death Note is written by Tsugumi Ooba (who's either a female or a male with a very female name) and drawn by Takeshi Obata (the guy who also did Hikaru no Go).
At this point I'm on L's side, because Light is more and more corrupted ever since he first found that note (Also, L makes me happy whenever he eats snacks XD). But if say I was the one who found the note, I'd be really tempted to do what Light did and kill criminals.

Did you know Hotta Yumi (author of Hikaru no Go) has a new manga called Yuuto? It's an ice skate (speed skate) story and hopefully it'll be as nice as HikaGo. I'm trying to get WTF to scanlate it, and if they do, it'll be a nice reunion of Hotta Yumi and Obata Takeshi :)
Hmmm. Did anybody read the newest chapter of DN? Ch57? I was like OoooooOoOO!!!
Thanks for posting this, lol. All of these positive comments made me finally go and download some chapters. I've been hearing about it, and wanted to check it out.

Hmm… You might wanna hold off on asking people to scanslate it. >> My sources (myself =/) tell me that my group has already translated the chapter, and we're just waiting on me to edit it._
Oh really? You can tell Snewcee @ #wethafans. They just wanted to try something on their new translator so I was throwing him stuffs. (Well, I only throw this one.)
Yeah, I edited chapter 3 for them at least half a year ago, and now the newest chapter released is chapter 4.
My group edited c4… :x Considering we already have translations up to somewhere in v2, the slowness is kinda sad... .__.
they should just release it in US shonen jump that'd be cool
… Except it's much too grim and serious to be allowed in Viz's ''kiddy image'' Shonen Jump. Nyu.
they should have Older Teen jump.
gantz, death note, beck, buncha stufffffff
In Japanese or in English?
I think Death Note is a good series to run on the Shonen Jump Advanced.
they should have Older Teen jump.
They do :P
Raito and Light are kinda the same thing since Raito is the Japanese word for Light. But nonetheless Light is what the Japanese Death Note products at Jump Festa 2005 called him in English. So I will just call him what Japan obviously want Americans to call him, Light. Kinda like the kanji for Luffy is Rufi and yet Japan write his name in English as Luffy. And we all(sane people) call him Luffy, so we should also call him Light.
And Death Note should not be licensed by VIZ because VIZ translations suck badly and L's name would probably be R or something.lol VIZ have translating problems.

**
Raito isn't the Japanese word for Light. It's simply the English word, Light, with a heavy Japanese accent. To make matters more confusing, the kanji he uses for his name is the character for "moon" (which is why Misa calls him "Tsuki" the first time she sees him…it's one of the ways to pronounce said kanji.
And Viz does an excellent job at translating most of the time. Certainly better than Tokyopop, or Dark Horse's translation of Trigun (though DH's other stuff tends to be good...it's just Trigun that sadly, got completely shafted).

I think he was referring to Young Jump? Not an American publication, heh…
And as for Viz's translations, I think they're usually fine. They just go overboard on the Americanization for stuff like Naruto and One Piece. =/
No, it's Jump Advanced, in English. But maybe it's not a magazine… Maybe just publishing English tanko under the category "Jump Advanced" so that they can distinguish... :/
so i reda the first volume and i just agree , great manga. must read some more :)
VIZ's translations used to be near perfect in their first Shonen year, and that is why we are so offended that their translations are really bad now. Nowadays they don't cuss (everything suffers from this) nudity is edited (Shaman King Ren's crack and Ultimate Muscle all comical nudity is edited), Lame westernizations (Especially Naruto attacks, Moe Howard, etc and One Piece, ZO"L"O, Pirate slang, and "Darn you, Mihawk, Darn You") Also VIZ translate sound effects, which erases the pictures around them. (You can actually see the erase marks in some of their translations). And they aim their edited Teen rated products at little kids. And Shaman King has content edits aka Tanuki Balls= Stretchy Tum-Tum, etc. And in Hikaru no Go Graphic Novels cigarettes are changed to chewing gum. Sad. And in Bleach Volume 5, the character Chizuru, was changed from being gay to just being someone who "wants to be like Orihime." Sad.
Probably that's why they came up with Jump Advanced, so that they don't have to censor as much. Or I hope.
Not like I read any of them anyway… Even if I buy in English, they'll just sit there, unopened +_+
But... Possibilities of DN coming to the States might be low, since it's all about killing and stuff. :(
Death Note was banned in schools in China because the students would make fake "Death Notes" pretending to kill teachers and other students that they did not like. So since Death Note was banned from schools in China, just think how it would be treated in America, the country where kids are influenced by everything.
Although it is just pretend still the teachers do not like it. So I hope that VIZ never get Death Note because they will try to kiddy-ize it and change the Death Note to the Life Note or something stupid like that. lol

I'd argue that translation itself hasn't gotten any worse. They're just more paranoid about censorship now. =/

haha thats awesome
Yeah, I read about that in LJ. They even sell Death Note on street o.o!
dude i'd buy one
Death Note will not hit American shore. At least not when Bush is still president. Because they'll be afraid that the kids will know that people die. People don't die, you see, they're only injured such that they can't practice swords anymore ^_~
Say, does anyone know where to find chapter 58 raw? I've been spoiled and the newest plot development is killing me O_o;
PS: Chizuru un-lesbian? Now that's… weird.
Knock-out Note could be pretty cool though.

lol, yeah. Yeah, you are right. And Chizuru is not gay in America anymore. She just wants to "be like Orihime" as of Vol.5. She was gay in volumes #1-4 in America, but not anymore. It looks very weird when (in the English version) Chizuru says, "I just want to be like Orihime," and then Tatsuki screams at her. It makes no sense.
It would be stupid for VIZ to bring out Death Note, Ichigo 100%, Gintama, and Busou Renkin, figuring that Borders already carries them in Japanese. And besides, VIZ would edit the crap out of them anyway.
