If I remember correctly, way back in episode 1 of the anime, Luffy said he wanted about 10 crew members. If we assume both Robin & Usopp re-join and Franky & Paulie join, then the crew (with their roles) will be:

Luffy - Captain
Zoro - First Mate
Nami - Navigator
Usopp - Ammunitions (sharp-shooter ==> canons)
Sanji - Cook
Chopper - Doctor
Robin - Historian
Paulie - Carpenter/Shipwright
Franky - Musician (IMHO)

If for some reason Vivi returns, then her role could be Diplomat (ie. greetings, communications, etc.) or something like that.

That being said, I'm just wondering what other people think are roles that are left to be filled for the straw hat crew, and consequently, what will be total # of crew members for the straw hats in the end?

Personally, I can't think of any significant "ship role" that is still missing, so maybe there will be no more crew members. That may not necessarily be a bad thing I guess, since having too many crew members would make it really difficult to show the relationships between the various characters (one of the main reasons why I love One Piece).

I think Oda will bring the new member chapter titles back. Chapter 6 was entitled "The First Person," while chapter 68 was "The Fourth Person." The people referred to were Zoro and Sanji, who won't be leaving the crew anytime soon. It was only after Arlong was defeated and Nami dedicated herself that she got her title; chapter 94, "The Second Person."

Usopp and Robin never got theirs, and they're currently out of the crew. I think that when they rejoin at the end of the arc (along with whatever shipwright goes with them), there'll be a chapter with its title mentioning it. Why Chopper wasn't the sixth, I'm not entirely sure about.

But in the end, I think we'll see "The Tenth Person" at some point, since Oda's been keeping count and sticks to what he says. While a pirates' ship is dear to them, I don't really count it as part of the crew.

As for Franky being the musician, I doubt it. I don't think he'd leave Water Seven just to be a pirate musician. And a pirate ship with a diplomat? Also unlikely.

Vivi won't return and Luffy's decision for 10 crews was in the manga frist, not the anime. I think olny one crew would join. And for 10 crews, a musican may be the last crew, we don't know what crew number 9 role would be.

I think that the fact that Zoro got the title of "first person" might indicate that the ten people are apart from Luffy, since Luffy technically is the first person. So as many as two unidentified positions on top of the identified ones (shipwright, musician) left to fill. What else could there be? Dancer? Smith? Tinker? Tailor? Magician? Manual laborer? IT technician?

I just donÂ´t get why everyone always thinks that Pauley and Franky will join the Strawhats. Have we ever seen two guys from the same place join the Strawhats? No! Have we ever seen two guys join the Strawhats at the same time? No! Seriously I wonder if some of you guys would have been convinced that during the Drum arc Chopper and Dalton would join the Strawhats, or that maybe Vivi and Peruh would have did that during the Alabasta arc. One carpenter is enough! The Strawhats arenÂ´t a group of 70 pirates but 7 so far. They are a small pirate group, a family. And the family increases step by step.

Just donÂ´t worry guys, there will be lots of upcomming story arcÂ´s to leave opportunities for more members joining the Strawhats. So far they still have to get passed six shichibukai, three Admiral Supremes, Blackbeard, Whitebeard and Shanks. And Crocodile was the last major villain who belonged to one of these groups, so who knowÂ´s how many other random guys will appear. Not to mention that Dragon will play a big role too. ThereÂ´s a lot of time to find more crew mates. In fact, after the carpenter joins there are so much enemies left but only four more places left for new Strawhats. So I guess we should just have faith in Oda and not want something to happen too fast. ;)

And as far as the amount of Strawhats is concerned. I read it like that, that Luffy says heÂ´s searching for ten crewmembers. So this would mean 11 Strawhats in the end. BTW, I still believe one of them will be a helmsman. If the Strawhats want to get that far as Gold Roger did, then they need to have the best helmsman in the world. Maybe heÂ´ll join in the last arc before the Strawhats have to cross Red Line (however they are going to do it).

Buc, we are talking about pirates not numbers. Luffy says he wants a crew of ten he will get a crew of ten but he isnt included in the ten people. I though it would be fun if Paulie(Lasher means one who uses ropes to fasten things or tie up stuff)and Franky to join it is because it has been over 200 chapters since a new crewmember joined and there is still 2 or 3 it really depends on who joins this arc.I wouldnt mind who joins this arc im just suggesting that the chances are high Franky and since Paulie does know how to use ropes pretty good i just think he would be a good lasher.I also think why Franky does use money for proably for boat parts or information. some people may like Paulie or Franky some of like them both so we root for both of them to join. Who do u like more Buc.

Quality, not quantity. There's no way to make a crew of say, 15 interesting.

Ten people besides Luffy just sounds like too much. Zoro's neglected enough as it is.

I like Franky mcuh better, but I'll admit, while Franky has more experience with ships, Pauly's skills would really come in handy. Again, I just don't see the crew being overloaded with new people. There's still much to learn about the current crew of seven.

I think we're just going to get one person in this arc. It's just a matter of the way the story is flowing. Technically, Carue and Vivi joined at the same time so it is possible there will be two members joining at once. I just don't think it will be in this arc.

Aside from the Flashback, there has been no hint at Franky joining at all. Paulie has been the character thus far that has been working side-by-side with the Straw Hats and fitting in with them. Oda paired him off with Nami, Chopper, Luffy, and Zoro for a reason.

Peruh, doesnÂ´t have any special personality? HeÂ´s the guardian of both Nefeltari family and the country. HeÂ´s not just a common warrior, he even slapped the little Vivi as an act of education. He was willing to give his life to protect two fighting armies. Just because he isnÂ´t as funny as Pauley it doesnÂ´t mean that he doesnÂ´t have a personality.
And that Zoro and Chopper argument proves that you didnÂ´t get what I meant in the first place. Pauley is in Water 7, what Peruh is in Alabasta and what Dalton is in Drum, while Franky is in Water 7, what Chopper was in Drum. Alabasta is a bit different here because Nico RobinÂ´s character wasnÂ´t explored there because it would have been too soon.
BTW, maybe Peruh was a bad choice, but then letÂ´s just take Mr. 2. He definitely is the Pauley of Alabasta and he didnÂ´t join the Strawhats either. As cool as Pauley is, heÂ´s not Strawhat material (though I would day to see interactions between him, Sanji and the females. :D ).

And at BaratiÃ Oda actually paired just with Luffy, the interactions with Nami, Zoro and Sanji donÂ´t really count since theyÂ´ve been just business pairings.

Besides, if this arc wants to be a mega arc as Alabasta and Skypia then it will keep going on for many more chapters. In this time thereÂ´s plenty of room to bring Franky more close to the Strawhats then he is now.

Haha, Buc, I respectfully disagree. He's got Chemistry with Usopp and just Usopp. Paulie has chemistry with Luffy and Nami and has been in the same group with Chopper and Zoro. Franky's Family is still around and alive (nobody dies in One Piece) and will need him when all of this is done. Something will happen with the whole Spandam confrontation that will allow Franky to stay in Water 7 in some way. He'll reunite with Iceberg and fulfill his dream in Water 7 along with Iceberg of making a "dream ship" together, leaving Paulie the one to maintain it. This will happen because Iceberg will probably be involved with the ship's building as well as Paulie. It will be Water 7's last act of remembrance of the great Tom.

Mr. 2 was a "wacky" minor villian like Jango that redeemed himself in the end. There was no chance of him joining.

Paulie is a hero working side-by-side with the Straw Hats in an active way. Wiper did not fight side-by-side with the Straw Hats. Kozha and Konis were more in supporting roles. I think this is what is key here.

Paulie is one of three new "good guys" introduced in this arc that are important in this arc. The other two are Iceberg and Franky. Iceberg is out of the running to join. Franky's character design is very over-the-top like a Mr. 2. He has the estranged relationship with Iceberg going on that just screams "reunion" at the end. Franky's storyline can easily be wrapped up with a happy ending at the end of this arc. Paulie has a lot more to offer the group in upcoming arcs from a character standpoint. He fits in very well, does not dominate every panel he is in, and has potential for growth.

Franky seems like he would sacrifice himself for the Luffy and co. even though he doesnt know them a lot. I think it would be funny if Pandaman joined the crew as something.can somebody nelp me get a picture of Franky and Paulie.

Buc, you bring up good points. And it does look like Paulie right now is calling the shots in Galley-La. But I think this is being done to just show some of his strength of character. Iceberg still has Lulu and Tilestone. And I do think the Franky Family will end up merging with Galley-La. All this time they were dismantlers. Now they'll start building ships as per Tom's dream.

ThereÂ´s no doubt that Franky would do the same to the Franky Family. We still donÂ´t know what he spent the money on. It will be explained later in the arc. But one thing is sure, it will be something that the FF has waited for an eternity and such things are always used as turning points in relationships of groups.

Another point is that thereÂ´s a similarity with the Drum arc. Just as Chopper was determined to cure the country in the name of Hiruluk and getting rid of the king, Franky is determined to build something beautiful that will cross the world as Tom did it. Why do you think he didnÂ´t left Water 7? Even though Spandam was gone long ago he couldnÂ´t left the island until he could have make Spandam pay what he did to Tom. And now he has the chance to do so. After Spandam will be defeated he will feel that Tom can rest in peace, as it was the case for Chopper and Hiruluk, aswell as for Nami and Bellemere.

His work in Water 7 would be done. He could then set sail to fulfill his dream with the Strawhats. And Pauley would be there to clean up all the mess everyone left just as Vivi did in Alabasta.

As the Usopp Pirates they had a common dream and that was to protect the small man from any bad thing. After they did that by saving Kaya and the village they got dissolved everyone went on to follow his own dream.

As far as the Franky Family is concerned they donÂ´t mention anywhere that having the money to get what they want is the same as Franky being able to build his dream ship.
If the Strawhats say "Now we can finally do what we have waited for so long, by repairing Going Merry" it doesnÂ´t mean that Luffy has found One Piece, Zoro has beat Mihawk, Nami drew her wolrd map etc. etc. Get what I mean?

Building his dream ship is equivalent to Usopp becoming a great warrior of the sea while protecting the village as Usopp Pirates might be equivalent to what the goal of the Franky Family is.

No he doesnÂ´t. YouÂ´re right here. But in order to make sure that the ship keeps intact while it crosses the most dangerous route in the world she should better be onboard. And btw, IÂ´m sure that this beautiful ship will be a rebuilt and improved Going Merry.
Yes, Merry became useless after the incident with Kaku, but didnÂ´t Cutty FlamÂ´s body also become useless after the train hit him? While he himself was mortally wounded he was able to "repair" and improve his body. I have yet to see Pauley pulling something like that. ThereÂ´s no doubt that Franky is the guy who could give new life to Merry.

Another point is that he built the Battle Frankies. With them he was able to take out Seakings! That is another thing that might came in handy when youÂ´re on the quest to conquer One Piece. ThereÂ´s no doubt that Franky will be the one who will give the Strawhats a good ship. And if he does then I doubt that he would let anyone else let in charge of the ships maintanance then himself. Just how I see it. :)_

I really like your analogy here. I never thought of comparing Franky rebuidling himself to rebuilding some form of dream ship for the Straw Hats. But I think that the building of this ship will be a gift from all of Water 7 to the Straw Hats. That is how it will be done in less than a week when this arc is over. This means that all of Galley-La and the Franky Family will transform whatever Franky purchased into some dream ship. Franky just wants to build a fantastic ship like the one Tom built for Roger. Iceberg and his Galley-La will pitch in to honor Tom. So Paulie will be involved in the building and know the ship as well, giving him the knowledge to maintain it on the high seas.

It was kinda rude. He had a point: the villagers had no part in Nami's life, other than the connection they'd obtained through the ordeal with Arlong. How many even them even thought about her dream?

The Franky Family dedicated themselves to Franky's cause. They were close to being a pirate crew in his relationship with him.

Usopp crew had their own dreams, Franky said when they gave 200 millions bellies "Now we can finally get what we have waited so long for", to his crew. And if they didnt have the same dream/goal they why would they give Franky 200 million belly?

Because it'd wouldn't have been fair to say "I" if they also helped. They probably had an agreement or something. We still don't know how he came to join them, so we can't say much about their relationship other than from what we've seen.

And btw, IÂ´m sure that this beautiful ship will be a rebuilt and improved Going Merry.

I don't think so. If it turns out the GM was able to be fixed, then Usopp would get big headed again, and he'd be right about Luffy then. What they need to do is work out an understanding. Besides, even Franky said it was done, and Oda said a crew member would be eliminated.

I kinda figured the ship would come from Galley-La. Pauly was all like "get them whatever they need," and they need a ship right now. Whatever ship used to cross AL would be perfect for them. I stopped thinking Franky would build the ship when he learned that Usopp wanted to sail and didn't offer him a ship.

And there's always the possibility of the purchase not being ship related at all.

ThereÂ´s no doubt that Franky will be the one who will give the Strawhats a good ship.

I believe it's Galley-la's who will give the ship. Right now Straw Hats need a ship, the best one there is, to reach Eneas Lobby where Sanji, Usopp and Franky are eventually waiting them. Besides Galley-la's still own to Luffy, what would be a better way to pay back than an awesome ship.

Franky's dream ship is an impossible far away dream to become the best shipwright there is but it's just dressed into fancy words.

Well there I agree with you. Though I think that Franky would be able to rebuilt Merry because I donÂ´t think that he never went that far to compare that to his own situation, I must admit that I myself often thought that all carpenters of Water 7 would build a ship for the strawhats. I donÂ´t really see a reason why it should not be like that. :)

I know that Franky said that. But he also said that his own body was useless and that he had to replace it which was successful. And so far I donÂ´t he ever compared MerryÂ´s sitation to the one of Cutty FlamÂ´s body. However, IÂ´ve now heard for the first time that Oda said that a crew member would be eliminated. Well if thatÂ´s the case then it much it pains me, I hope that Merry will be this crewmember because I donÂ´t want any of the Strawhats go. Or did he mean Usopp by that? Please no! HeÂ´s the heart and soul of the Strawhats!

_IÂ´m sorry myself. I went a little bit overboard. ItÂ´s just that IÂ´m not a native english speaker and therefore it takes lot of time until I somehow can constructively write down my thoughst. And then when I see that only one part of the entire construct gets criticized it makes my angry. I got to work on my attitude here, IÂ´m sorry. :(

And just as Buccaneer said, actually you had the point that it wasnÂ´t the villagerÂ´s dream to draw the map. But I guess by now we all now that that wasnÂ´t the point I was trying to proove. ;)

Weird. Every arcs needs one good and and a bad wiredo, in this arc it is Franky and probally Nero.. :P

After defeating the CP9 everyone (well iceberg) would be so happy, he'll make them a ship for free XD it's either that or going merry COMEs BACK ALIVE!!! O__O (lol, less likely)

Anyways… I doubt BOTH franky and Paulie would be joining the straw hats... If you were to think about it... Luffy would like Franky more because of his uniqueness (cyborg) and we all know how Oda loves to make unique characters join Luffy's crew... but will Franky accept? (that's the question) but IMO franky would PROBABLY be selected to be the shipwright.
