Yes, people I said it. Do you classify yourself as a nerd? Have you ever felt kinda awkward when someone else is watching you post on a forum dedicated to a manga? Are you obsessed with Final Fantasy or Lord of the Rings?

I have felt kinda awkward checking out the limited amounts of manga at my school library and started reading through it during lunch. Yeah, ignorant people say stuff like callin me a nerd or a geek and such and such. Hell, I was walking in the halls and a group of girls who didn't know me wanted to know who i was cause I was walking with my back turned to them. They called my name and I turned around, and just cause they didn't know who I was they called me a nerd.:wassat: I turned around and couldn't help but smile. I'm obsessed with video games, anime, manga, and artists most people never even heard of. I wear "Street Wear Fashion" so I guess I am a nerd. And I think it's cool.

What do you think of the whole nerd ordeal? You think nerds are people who are just interested in different things than others? Do you think nerds are weird people who will never be popular or cool? Or do you think nerds are just more artistic and real to about things and the like? Are you a nerd?

Not really. With the exception of watching anime, and playing games I'm not really much of a nerd. I'm lazy and not interested in academic achievement at ll(although if I put my mind to it, I could).

I also don't really look the part of a nerd, and I'm generally well liked by women. I also regularly participate in sports activities although I've never played for a team or anything.

I have been called a nerd before tho. That person called me a nerd because I had a computer. I proceeded to ask this person WTF? cuz that was the most ignorant comment ever.

In a nutshell, I don't think I've put in enough work to be considered a nerd (not that there's anything wrong with being a nerd tho).

Sometimes I don't see people fascination of being well liked and popular at there schools or workplaces. Me personally don't give a shit about being popular because everybody who are popular just seem like a bunch of assholes.

But to answer I'm not really a nerd. The only manga I really pay attention to is One piece though I've quite sports because I have realized there is no future in it.

I like manga and video games and such, and I definetly fit into the nerd category, except I'm extremely lazy, and while I could have a 4.0 GPA, I make worse grades than I could, I also play a few sports pretty often. But still, I'm classified as a nerd.

Why is that Polygon? Is it becuase that you just don't think about it much cause more things are goin on at the moment? That's why I think that there are a lot of secretive people out there who are too afraid to show it. I'm not sayin you do that, but that's how I feel how many people are.

EXACTLY! But I listen to some mainstream rap, but listen to mainly nu soul. My fav artist is Lupe Fiasco becuase his music is amazing and he can relate to being a nerd. He is barely mainstream hip hop, but he likes things that most rappers dont. Like manga cartoons, video games etc.

But I dont have a Myspace, cause I just think it's stupid to meet people online like for real. I'd rather meet them in person cause that person your seein on Myspace, could be faking his or her personality. As for PSP…..I own a red DS with a copy of Jump Ultimate Stars currently in the cartridge slot.

I'm only popular because of my habit of speaking out loud without thinking first. This is a pretty bad, thing I have to admit, but it makes me… well...me.

As far as the nerd factor goes, yes. I watch Anime and Play videogames, but if you saw me in public, you would never guess that, because most nerds go off to the side and do their own thing, whereas I like to be the center of attention.

I play games, I read plenty of literature and I spent most of my time in the computer or watching movies. In school, I got good grades and I was never active in any special event. If I was/am nerd, I don't care. This nerd thing is not a big deal, just don't care about people say or think that being a nerd is bad.

Eh, though I like Anime/Manga (and people know it) they don't classiy me as a geek because I used to live in Japan/ half Japanese and classify me as "popular" anyway. I think that's pretty pathetic- because if a caucasian girl likes anime, she's a geek. Whereas an asian girl liking anime is okay. Same with looks: If you're pretty, who cares?

Well, I guess I could be classified as a nerd. I fit somethings (3.0+ GPA, quiet, manga/anime fan, and most of my friends are asian). But most classify me as emo/bi-polar/mute/deaf, even though I'm not, just cause I RARELY talk.

Yea, I acted like a jerk in elementary to get people to like me, but I was still quiet. Although I don't act like myself in school, I rather hide my self (obnoxious/loud) that pretend to be someone else.

Heh, I definatley consider myself to be a nerd. I'm good with math (currently the only one in my school taking Advanced Math, although it's a small private school XD;), good with English/grammar, and I enjoy science to an extent. (I'm terrible at chemistry and physics, though… I'm better at earth science and life science and that kind of thing.) I'm getting an A in all my classes now except for Advanced Math (getting a B in it because I missed like... two problems on a very small test) and Chemistry (which I'm terrible at--getting a D).

I play videogames a lot--heck, I was REQUIRED to play them when I was little since I had lazy eye. XD I don't play war games or stupid realistic games though--mostly Mario, Pokemon, and Kirby stuff, with a few other types of games scattered here and there. World of Warcraft, too, although I can only subscribe once in a while.

Don't watch a whole lot of anime, though. Used to watch Pokemon, used to watch Kirby, started watching a few others for a while but lost intrest... Now I just watch One Piece. I read the One Piece manga, but that's only because I want to keep up so I don't have to deal with spoilers. I really don't like reading manga other than that.

I'm also nuts when it comes to fantasy and the like. I have a collection of dragon toys and figures and the like in my room, and I enjoy a lot of fantasy books. I'm even WRITING a fantasy book that I hope to be published someday.

Oh, and I also RP a ton. XD I'd like to try tabletop roleplaying or LARPing sometime, but I don't know anyone else who does. >>

I'm actually not too big into LotR or Final Fantasy, though. (Although I DO like Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles and FF9.)

Not anymore. I used to be one when I was younger, but I sort of mellowed out from the hardcore knowledge aquisition. Now I'm all rusty and "normal"; I'd like to go back and be a nerd again, though, especially for law and such.

Interestingly, my school never really made distinctions between nerds, jocks, geeks, and whatnot; typically, sports oriented folk like myself were the highest achieves in school, while the "computer geek" fellows the lower performers, right above the second language speakers (sadly).

Meh Im not. The only thing that does make me one is that im in advanced math and have a 4.0. Aside from that I try to blend in. I have been called nerd though from being in a higher math but those people changed their minds when they got to know me. Theres also something wrong with being nice at school. To be normal at my school you have to have a myspace, listen to rap/rock, not care for school, make fun of others.

Though thats only me stereotyping the other cool people. I for one count myself as popular due to the fact that I can say high to anybody and have them know me in a good way. Being nice and social is a way to prevent being a nerd.

I hate that. I am starting to think if every high school in the US is like this. "If you dont like rap, and dont like to party on school nights then you are a nobody", is silly. Anyway…am I a nerd? I dont know. I dont know the difference between a nerd and geek. I turn a "quote" and "quote" negative into a positive. A lot of people know what I like. But if they come and say something stupid, I always tend to outsmart them. I am not trying to tute my own horn, but the things some of these idots come up and tell me are pretty easy to turn around to make them look stupid. I talk to a lot of people, people who like and who dont like anime, people who are and arent popular. Either way, I have no complaints. If people are going to discriminate aginast me for what I like or do, well then, I wouldnt want to be their friend in the first place.

Yeah, I consider myself a nerd, and I do watch anime and other stuff in front of people at the college in between classes in the student lounge. But the cool part, is that no one really care about it. Since I pretty much treat everyone with respect. And I got a couple of new people interest in the stuff. Even through I'm a nerd, a lot of these hot chicks end up talking to me, and hang around them in talk about stuff. Even through I'm really nervious and shy around girls. But that what I get for being nice to everyone.

I don't know if I consider myself as a nerd/geek/whatever... But since my biggest intrests are manga and video games so maybe.. But thats just because I absolutly LOVE fantasy worlds! Though im not the average nerd.. I mean, I love to go out partying, I have a lots of friends, (many of them being pretty girls ), I train boxing and streetdance, I was best at long distance running at my previous school, I have above the average grades in my school... and what I waste most of my money on, is on clothes, I love clothes and looks is quite important for me.. and as long as I have money I don't care what the price is, I have jeans for 250$ jacket for 400$ and a lot of other things, but thats just cause thats want I lay my money on.. I only buy cheap games, the only games I buy that is expensive is Zelda because I can't wait till they get cheap. My computers skills sucks big time, I'm movie addicted and Ihate those typical amercian mainstream movies, I listen to most hiphop, though most old school hiphop.. Ialso love reading books, I can easily read 150 pages a day if i love the book and don't have any homework. What more.... ah, yes I LOVE animals and nature enviroments, but also big cities like NY and tokyo, and speaking of tokyo.. I LOVE japanese culture and I have already planned a trip there with my friend.. Yeah another thing, I only have 2 friends who likes manga and fantasy video games.. -_- I'm a virgin though, but thats only because I would like to do it with someone I like… don't know if I can hold that promise but so far I can, and I have never been together with a girl, but thats only cause those I like dont like me and those who like me, I dont like. There is nothing wrong with being a nerd, dork or anything else as long as you are being "you". What's really wrong is to listen to other's opinion and change your behaviour only to be "accepted". I wrote the last word in brackets because you won't be able to get any real acceptance or respect as long as you act like an idiot.

An example from my old class: A girl who is your average bimbo (means blond dyed hair with an attitude "I'm better than everyone else" who treats people who aren't "cool" in her opinion like shit) is now 19, has a kid and lost every "friend" she had before.

I, who wasn't cool in her eyes because I have different interests than her, still have every one of my friends. They accept me the way I'm and would never talk behind my back, leave me because of a fight or anything else.

That's the difference. I may be a nerd or dork for some people but I can care less about their opinion. I'm being me and that is all that counts.

Eh… as for the original question: Yup, I'm a nerd in the actual society... who cares?

Well I'm more of a geek than a nerd because I'm well-liked at my school(without being considered "popular") and watch anime/read manga and play games a lot. I'm never home on friday nights though. Aaand my grades are horribles, I'm in no way smart and the most complex thing i can do with a computer is host a pic on imageshack.

Also you can like anime and not be a nerd at all. Like my best friend started going into bars and picking up older women at 15 and he watched the entire bleach series at least five times. And my other friend skipped school this year to have sex with his girlfriend, go to parties and watch Naruto (and other animes). So yeah just because you have a hobby different from sports or hanging out at the mall doesn't make you "nerdy".

I suppose i could be considered a geek, but i can generally write off anything nerdy being an illustration student. Even still, i'm fairly nerdy for one. I've got a collection of comics (although i'm rather picky) and used art books (YAY STRAND), cartoons on DVD/bootlegged (again i'm pretty picky), and i go to cons, which i'm not very picky about but i can only go to those that are fairly close/anything but otakon since i don't have much money.

Generally i don't think people care in college, save for the scant few who still think they're in high school, like my suitemate. DX

Geek, possibly. Just because:

1: I don't fall into any other category

2: I watch Anime and read Manga(but would only call myself 17% Otaku, maximum)

3: I know my way around a computer, and can make my own video games when I get time.

Basically I don't fall into any other categories so I fall into geek by default, but not nerd, not my a longshot. I won't fall into any category until the world recognizes a Gamer as a real category and not a sub-category of geek. Then I will be one of them.

But never nerd, I'm not that lame.
