always get an increase in his bounty after helping a woman in the crew(if Vivi counts)?
First bounty after helping Nami: 30,000,000
Next Vivi: 100,000,000
Now Robin: 300,000,000
Next?: 1,000,000,000?
Why does Luffy…
-
-
It's more like he gets a new bounty when he does something huge.
30mil, beat arlong and several other notable pirates
100mil beat crocodile
300mil beat Rob Lucchi, declared war on the WG, and he "burned down Enies Lobby" -
Lol. Even though it has women involved in every case, it only remains me of how little intereast he has paid to women over the series… He is quite shock by them one way or another often.
-
I heard that Luffy is going to save CosmicDebris from Jimbei in the next arc and his bounty will be raised to 1,000,000,000 beli. I'm looking forward to it, myself.

It made me laugh :)
That is an interesting pattern, though. Maybe it's mirroring the whole "save the princess" archtype from stories? Yeah it was more literal in Vivi's case than Nami and Robin, but it's a possible angle to view it from.
Jolly-Gold-Roger has a point though - it's usually when he does something big, but once again, what the WG defines as big coincides whenever he's helping a female (more than likely a coincidence in the OP world, maybe more deliberate on Oda's part). He's helped out most of the male crew without getting a bounty (unless you count Franky in this past arc, but none of his bounty increases have had a focus on one of the male Straw Hats as of yet).
That's not to say it won't happen. There is evidence to support at least two people are left to join the Straw Hats and just because Zoro, Usopp, Sanji, Chopper, and Franky are established crew members doesn't mean they're going to run into other issues. Zoro could come across a dojo that was a rival with his own, Sanji might encounter some old rivals of Zeff's (Zeff WAS a Grand Line pirate), and wasn't Hiruluk a former criminal?

Fool! I need not be saved by a rubberman.
As it was said, it's just a coincidence that he was helping a female. It was what he did in the process that earned him a bounty.
1 - By defeating Arlong and making the traitorous Marine Nezumi angry by ruining his trade
2 - By defeating one of the Shichibukai, Crocodile
3 - By declaring war on the world government, attacking Enies Lobby, and defeating high ranked governement officials -
XD The great CosmicDebris reduced to a damsel in distress.
Nah, CosmicDebris is going to hold out for Usopp saving her…

That reminds me of someone who said something about CosmicDebris having Jembei's babies, or something like that.
Bounty1Berry would like that.

Everyone knows that women in One Piece are utterly incapable of doing things themselves, no matter how strong they come off to be.

Go watch Tenchi Muyo OAV and say that about Washuu.

Luffy's next bounty will be 900,000,000 Beri.
you heard it here first!

@Private:

You're a fool, you do know that right? Women and anime/manga have had "almost" equal treatment with men.
Animes to watch to see this: Elfen Lied, Gun X Sword, Red Garden, One Piece, Elemental Gelade, various other series besides the ones that keep my main attention.
What I find humorous is how Luffy is always saving a crew member from terrible things, this is not just gender based. Even though Zoro is the "future" world's best sword's man, he still needs saving every arc from something, maybe not a big something, but still he needs help.
Of course, this is not just limited to Luffy, the rest of the Straw Hat's have to save Luffy a lot.

Hah. I've never got around to watching the OVA, but I've seen all the other episodes.
Well… meh... time to edit the post.

:wub:actually that's incorrect luffy only gets bounties when the arc had marine involvement
1. arlong arc the mouse looking marine went and put up a huge bounty that why they looked into the past and saw buggy, crede, and arlong defeat.
2. in alabasta arc smoker, hina and other marines were to report the incident with crocodile so his bounty got raised again.
3. in ernies lobby arc it was kinda of it being inevitable for luffy's bounty to go up again as he bought thousands of marine down there kneesso saying luffy bounties goin up is related damsels in distress is just a conicidence

lol Well no shit, I mean the Marines ARE the ones who write the bounties.

Because Oda is stuck on Disney. He always uses the 'princess in need' storyline, like Nami, Vivi, Robin, that chick in Apple Island, or Conis. Everyone is a sucker for a beautiful, helpless woman at the hands of an evil mustache twirling villiain with rope and convenient train tracks.
Davey back had the old dude and the girlie horse… that was slightly off beat, but basically in the same neighborhood.
I think Oda is scared to go off the plantation.
OK, so where does it stand now? ...
• Character moments
• Herald appears
• Trek to destination
• Discovering initial information (Bad Times begin)
• Helpless Woman is in trouble
• Uncovering full situation (twist in data/events)
• Flashback/Black stuff
• Luffy gets stuck
• Bad people are winning
• Luffy unstuck
• Someone (usually the woman) is crying because the bad guys are bullies
• Luffy beats someone's ass (Bad Times end when someone big is beaten unconscious)
• Helpless Woman is vindicated
• Everyone eats too much and dances
• People leaveIf I was Oda, I'd make a 'one issue arc' which happens in a very small proximity. Someone calls Luffy into a shop with something vexing, Luffy and gang go in, Luffy asks what is wrong, helpless woman (pretty girl) tells Luffy she has not enough cash to buy a candy bar, the shop owner give Luffy some lip, the woman has a flashback about how all her food was blown up accidentally when she was 8 years old and was beaten and throw around since until now when she just doesn't make enough to afford the candy bar, Luffy's hand gets stuck in a vase, the shop owner demands the candy bar back, the woman cries, Luffy's hand gets free, Luffy beats the living crap out of the shop owner, woman is happy, Luffy eats everything in the shop, everyone leaves.

Plus the whole overall story involved with Robin was done well even though the "story breakdown" timeline was used. I do not see what the big issue here is?
-
Eh, it's better to have a damsel in distress for a big part of the story like that - at least to me it is. It wouldn't be as cool if it were a guy in distress from something huge like that.
Or maybe Oda's just sexist .

Private Zulen made a comment in an earlier post about how women in anime are helpless a lot, which is sometimes true, but if you really want to break it down. The good women are helpless or not true fighters, like Nami and Robin. While the bad women are strong and etc.
-
Everyone is sexist. Dirty little secret the nutty femmes never understood - there are genetic differences between sexes. Differences in people create differences in people's attitudes.
I love the hot, helpless chix besieged by problems. Gives men a reason to live, aside from eating, porking, and working.
I do not see what the big issue here is?
Who said it was a big deal?

Who said it was a big deal?
I figured that how you made the plot timeline, you had a issue with the way that Oda was writing One Piece, again it looks like I over thought things.
EDIT: @SteveRessel:

Not so true, I have dated both the weak and the strong women before and I do not like the women that are "helpless". It is a major turn off and the strong women make you want to continue to live and etc because they help you more.
-
Somewhere else people were noticing repetitive things in the series. I just roped it together and am expanding on it as I become conscious of the broader story outline template Oda consciously or subconsciously uses to form his comic arcs.

Yes. Women have a second X chromosome so we're more resistant to several genetic abnormalties including balding and color blindness. We're also the only source of mitochondrial DNA, so any mitochondrial linked illnesses that a woman has will be passed to all of her children.
And what would be so wrong if one of the male crewmembers got in trouble - AGAIN? Two of the three people who had to be rescued from the sea train were men (albeit Robin was the main objective). By the time Luffy got to the base of the mountain to help Nami find a doctor, Sanji was in tough shape, too. And wasn't Zoro doing his best scarecrow impersonation when we first met him?
Hey, what about when Nami saved Usopp's ass from Arlong or protected Sanji and Usopp during the Skypiea arc (and I would say that after being electrocuted they were probably in - GASP! - distress!)?
Point #1: It's happened before.
Point #2: It'll probably happen again. -

I have also noticed these thing in the series as well (around the Skypiea arc I'd say). I never really bothered to say anything, but I agree completely with your previous post. Oda does have a certain formula if you pay enough attention (although he throws a wrench or two every now and then) .Great Post

If that is all you can add to the difference, you should work at TIME magazine.
Here, let me simplify it for you : MEN LIKE TO PLAY FOOTBALL.
I think the mind of a 4 year old is more adept then the intellectuals today. At least a 4 year old can see the obvious.

Thanks. I never did either. It hit the bursting point with me this past week as others mentioned it and I got intrigued. It was partly a niggling intuition and part observation. I think Oda really knows how to redrape the same old windows. On another board I likened it to the human mating ritual of men vs women and how it is always the same damn thing but since it takes so long to do the dance you just don;t care and hump the moment wildly.
-
I notice it's proportional to Luffy beating a (generally considered) really cool villian.
I mean, I'd think the assault on the Marine base and taking Morgan out would have given him a couple million from day one, but it doesn't.
Nor did any of the things involved with Ao Kiji at Longring Longland.
But you take on the cool kids– Arlong, Croc, Lucci, they put a price on you.
So the bounties are all about a clique. :)
-
Hmm…
I thought that it had to do with the "common" pre-adolescent male fantasy of rescuing a girl from the clutches of some villain, and having her swear her undying love for them. That's right, there's no romance in One Piece--just pre-pubescent lust and domination fantasies.
-
Trueness, but no it has to do with a whole bent extrapolation of the mating ritual.
A man is rescuing a woman from being alone in her 'old age' AND all those other creepy guys out there. And proving it by doing the hard work while she just lounges in distress. If someone could make the actual married bliss seem realistically compelling, even as an extrapolated and simplified set of circumstances, they would make a billion. But sitting around working and dealing with assy groin droppings isn't compelling to anyone.
-
That's because it's less shameful to be rescued if one is a female. What if we replace Princess Vivi with a Prince Sth or Robin with Franky? It would make the victims involved looked more pathetic. Does anyone notice that more people complain about Usopp being rescued by Sanji than Nami being rescued by Chopper (in EL)?
It's also easier to evoke sympathy if the victim is a female.
Still, I agree with Dixxy Mouri that Oda does try to create small exceptions now and then.
-

The East Blue bounty wasn't because of Nezumi. Nezumi simply reported that Arlong was defeated by Luffy. The marines then looked into it, and discovered he had also beaten Buggy and Krieg (Kuro doesn't count, of course, because he's "Dead"), as well. What they didn't know about Krieg was that most of his fleet had been busted up by Mihawk beforehand.
It is just a coincidence that he was helping women at the time. In Skypeia, he was technically helping Cricket and the Saruyama Alliance (To be blunt, he didn't give a rat's ass whether Skypeia survived or not, he just wanted to ring the bell for Cricket). If the marines had known about that incident and it had occured on the Blue Sea, Luffy's bounty would be through the roof.
As mentioned in the other thread, Luffy's a bit of a sociopath. He even told Crocodile he doesn't care about other people; the only reason he helped Vivi was because he liked her.
Luffy would've gotten a bounty for rescuing Zoro if it wasn't for the fact that Morgan was corrupt and the marines under his command knew it. If they hadn't or he wasn't corrupt, he would've had at least a 5,000,000 bounty right at the start of the story. For whatever reason, Oda wanted his first bounty with Luffy to be a big one, I guess for the "Shock" factor.
So, really, it's just a big string of coincidences.
-
@ Fire Fist
Ok, now THAT is a lot of assumptions. While everyone knows that helping girls isn't the reason Luffy got a bounty, I think the point is whether or not it's a pattern we will see in the future. Personally I'm interested to see if it'll be true. Maybe if they try to get a mermaid on their crew, and Luffy needs to help her, they'll get another bounty increase.
-
Oh joy, the gender debate again. Is it a coincidence that Luffy's bounty has gone up when he's been rescuing a woman? Probably. Or at least, I doubt it's a conscious thig on Oda's part.
As for the whole 'girls are weak and need to be rescued' thing, I could post a very, very long debate on that, but I don't really want to. Point of fact: Luffy rescues everyone, regardless of gender. Luffy also gets rescued plenty himself. It's an equal opportunity show. And honestly, I'd much rather watch a female character that might not be able to physically beat the bad guy, but who at least doesn't give up and does what she can, than the character who can save the world but still has an emotional crisis because she can't get a date for Saturday night.
-
@ Fire Fist
Ok, now THAT is a lot of assumptions.Luffy: I WANT TO BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF CROCODILE!!!
If we stop the guys who are rebelling…
Will we stop Crocodile?
We can't do anything, even if we go to this place.
We're pirates. You'd be better off without us.Sanji: Sometimes he hits the bullseye without even thinking.
Usopp: That's Luffy for you.
Vivi: Well...
- Page 220 -
Luffy: You just don't want
anyone to die in this war!!
The people of your country,
or us, or anyone!!
You're talking about a fight against one of the "Seven Armed Seas",
in which over a million people will be in battle,
And all you want is for no one to die!!!
THAT'S NAIVE.Nami: STOP, LUFFY!! CAN'T YOU THINK OF VIVI'S FEELINGS-
Sanji: Wait, Nami-san...
Nami: But...!!
Vivi: What's wrong with that?! What's wrong about not wanting people to die?!!
Luffy: PEOPLE WILL DIE.
And then, later with Crocodile:
Crocodile: WHAT YOU WANT ISN'T EVEN IN THIS COUNTRY!!! AM I WRONG?!! WHY WOULD YOU DIE... FOR SOMEONE ELSE'S SAKE?!!
IF YOU JUST ABANDONED ONE OR TWO OF YOUR FRIENDS...!! YOU COULD AVOID THIS WHOLE CATASTROPHE!! YOU ARE SUCH UTTER FOOLS!!Luffy: That's why I said...
you don't understand anything...
Vivi...
tells other people not to die...
But she'd put her life on the line to save others...
If I let her do that, she'd die.
You guys would kill her!!Crocodile: YOU FOOL... THAT'S WHY I'M SAYING YOU SHOULD JUST LEAVE HER...
- Page 24 -
Luffy: I DON'T WANT HER TO DIE
BECAUSE SHE'S MY "FRIEND"!!!
So as long as she doesn't give up on her country...
WE WON'T STOP FIGHTING!!!Then in Skypeia:
Luffy: whoa!
whoa!
Whoa!
WHOA!!
Ooofh!!< <cricket: now="" listen="" to="" me...!!="" i="" swear,="" we're="" going="" get="" you="" into="" the="" sky!!!<br="">Luffy: DAMMIT...!!! I...!!! (hahh)
I HAVE TO LET THEM KNOW!!! (hahh!!!)
I'M GOING
TO RING THAT BELL!!!
RRRR!!!Nami: Luffy...
That was his main motivation for a lot of things. The reason he wanted to GO to Sky Island was because the log pose was set there and Luffy doesn't want the course to change. But the reason they stayed was because Luffy wanted to ring the bell for Cricket. He didn't give a rat's ass about Skypeia and hated the Shandians too because Wiper was hostile with him till the very end. The only Shandian Luffy got along with was Aisa, but that's because they were the perfect comedy duo.</cricket:>

I meant this. Sorry for the confusion.
They're marines. They saluted him and then punished themselves afterward. If Morgan hadn't been corrupt and Luffy had just blatantly assaulted him, he'd have a bounty.
