How would a mermaid fit in the crew??

Hello to u all….I was thinking about this question for a while right now, but i couldn't find an answer....

I know it's really common around here these days the merman/maid nakama theory. I also know about the lack of females in the group and how cool would be the next crew member being one....

The fact is, how would a mermaid fit in the storyline, we all know that mermaids in Oda world cannot walk on land, only the mermen have this capacity and the old ladies like Kokoro....
Another fact that may comprove this theory about a mermaid joining is the possible foreshadow about the fish tank in the "King Of The Beasts".....

Anyway, a mermaid would be kind of pointless if she couldn't be seen or couldn't fight, how would Oda work this??
Or do u guys think we'll have a Devil Fruit mermaid, or even a merman.....

I think I remember there being a discussion earlier about this where it was confirmed that merfolk/fishpeople can't have devil fruits.

A couple motnsh ago everyone started saying "No they'll explode if a merman tried to eat a DF" and I guess soemone just spread a rumor. All we know is they'll probably jsut be able to breathe, but they'll sink and need to be rescued, or they'll jsut starve to death.

Fish Men can walk on land, and not all of them are(totally) in the domination spirit, I'm sure there's one that is a good fighter and doesn't mind. Also the mermen leg-split age is 35, Kokoro has just passed that, considering in a, what, 20 eyar old or sometihng glashback she could already walk, she's jsut old.

If a mermaid was on the cew, then it would probably have some cool way of traveling the ship. Franky could build pipes for the mermain to go around, and she will pop up randomly to interact with the crew.

One of the other translations has it as a fish pond on the main deck that is connected to an aquarium in the dining room. The other option of course would be to have a fishwoman, like a female arlong. It's been stated somewhere that there Merpeople and fishpeople are different species, and we've seen one "fish" woman (half octopus half woman) in the tako stand cover story.

There's also the possibility of a merwoman that's over 30, although I doubt sanji would be happy with either of these options.

I don't think a mermaid over 30 would necessarily have to be someone unnatractive or be a typical "old lady" type.

Maybe she could be older than 30 but has the features of someone young, or she could be an incredibly hot older lady.

And if it was a fish-woman…...she could be not freaky looking with a more human shaped face and skin tone.

There's alot of possibility in how Oda could introduce a female fish or mer person. Hell we might get another dude for all we know (although at this point another woman would be very welcome)

If a mermaid do join the crew, then Luffy will probably get the singer he wanted because most mermaid legends state them as sirens that lures sailors into their doom by entrancing them with their singing. Might be an angle for Oda to pursue.

In our world. Crocus and Kureha are special cases. Though we don't know much about it, it's safe to say the life expectancy in Odaverse isn't nearly as long as it is on Earth.

I could see the Mugiwaras at least getting a mer-guest (perhaps rescuing them in the Dark Triangle and escorting to Merman Island). I wouldn't think Oda would introduce a new member of the crew so soon, at least not until after he gets some time to further develop Franky as part of the crew.

Then again… maybe after years of no new members, Oda might feel the urge to catch up >.>

Where did you get that idea from? Mermen and mermaids aren't different, as far as we know.

I'd say its more likely the crew gets a Fishman/Fishwoman member than a Merman/Mermaid, however. Because Fishmen look cooler.

I started reading OP three years ago or so and have been a lurker on these forums since near the beginning of the Water 7 arc, but now I'm going to take a dive and post some ideas.

First of all, a mermaid/fishman/whatever doesn't necessarily need to fit in the crew. Vivi didn't have any particular role in the crew, and Robin's role in the crew is completely unspecialized if there aren't any Poneglyphs around. Not every nakama needs a job; the only real qualification is believing in Luffy.

My guess is that the next arc is going to be a very relatively short one, about getting through the ship's graveyard. Then we get the next Odacchi epic - the Underwater Paradise arc. My theory is that Underwater Paradise is an island populated by both merpeople (like Kokoro) and fishmen (like Tom and Arlong). The fishmen rule over the merpeople with their insane strength, and years of said oppression has given all fishmen a nasty superiority complex. Jimbei rules over the island with an iron fist… er... fin-fist. My guess is that Tom and Kokoro left in the first place because Tom wasn't a fan of the situation and took Kokoro with him; she might have even been his lover or something.

Now that sounds a lot like Skypeia, doesn't it? I'm sure if my theory turns out to be true at all, Oda's going to have a lot of twists and turns and thematic elements that make it much different from Skpeia. But that's not where the prognostication ends!

Of course, Luffy et al. will be indignant over this fishmen rule thing, and will start raising a ruckus. Eventually, they'll have someone on the inside helping them out - this could be a mermaid, a fishman, or whatever the hell else Oda dreams up. I'm also thinking that it could be a human with a fish-fish fruit of sorts that has been masquerading as a fishman for awhile (using the in-between form). Of course, this totally retcons the idea that all DF users are hated by the sea, as a fish-human would be kind of pointless if that rule was absolute.

But anyway, back to the conflict. Jimbei is from the same school of thought as his old nakama Arlong, so there's going to be a lot of derision of the Mugiwara crew as this arc moves on. With the help of this new ally, Luffy and co. take out Jimbei and a bunch of other hella-strong fishmen (maybe Arlong comes back much stronger and has to take on Zoro with a new Kiribachi?) and bring an end to fishman rule, somehow ushering in an era of cooperation in the Underwater Paradise.

So yeah, that's my theory early on. I am probably completely wrong, of course, as Oda has surprised me a whole lot before in the past (totally didn't see it coming when CP9's true identities were revealed, for one), but right now I'm thinking we might get something along those lines. Right now I just want to see Usopp return to the crew (even if it's as Sogeking) and for Zoro to get a new sword. Who knows? Maybe Tom's estranged brother is a master swordsmith or something, heh.

Yeah, Oda does draw a gap between fish men and mermen…it'll be interesting to learn more about them. I also suspect there's a poneglyph in the island.

And Jinbei will probably be another EPIC melee brawl....I can't wait.

Uh, what? Nami and Robin are the deepest and most fleshed-out characters in the nakama [along with Usopp IMO]. And six men versus two women really isn't fair, so the next nakama will probably be female.

As to the mermaid on land… Sodom and Gomorrah went on land, didn't they? Even if their wheels looked really painful, Franky could build something similar for the mermaid.

I'd prefer a mermaid over a fishwoman because I think the next crew member should be a soft-spoken and cute female, to balance Nami's temper and Robin's seriousness and have someone that takes Chopper seriously... And I have trouble imagining how a fishwoman could look cute.

If mermaids can walk on land, they're also bound to be able to breathe air, just like fishmen.

Yeah, if the next person joining is female, she should be a young girl. One that would be competent in taking care of herself, but still get along with Chopper really well.

I have a theroy about the merman/mermaid joining. Since Luffy is looking for a musician, I thought it would be great if he found a band of Merman/mermaid instead of just one musician. NOTE This could be where my theory goes overboard.

Since I don't know much about devil fruit, I was thinking if quintuplets(5) found a devil fruit and split it between them. They all took it, but one of them because she/he was afraid of the effects. They are a band known on Fishman Island, also for their acrobatics. The fruit effect I think would be a paramencia that allows them to combine and give them some type of boost. So they could fight as individuals or as one. (as one person/ like if one person only ate it.) The one that didn't eat it would proably be a girl, maybe the only girl? I hate to say it, but think of it like when Naruto clones himself and jumps on his clones and such. That's how they would probably attack their opponent.

BACKROUND:
Their dream would probably be to travel the oceans and have everyone here their music and for their music to bring joy. They would probably be around chopper's age or older. They would also be taller then Chooper in his regular form. All 5 of them would have a different kind of personality, one a joker (Luffy, chopper, usopp like him the most.), one has the personality like zoro, etc. Basically they all have a different personaility like those of the crew, not exactly like them though. Like each member have their own favorite or favorites, though that might mean one or two won't be as liked as much. So they probably won't be liked more then the other one.

STORYLINE:
Not all of them would get bounties either, the marines would only think their was one of them. Their bounty would probably have to be a number that would be divided by 5. They could also use them when someone must run our stall time. Example: An enemy is following them(combined), when they turn the corner and split. Think of them as a chibi version of the combined one, they then run away.

Like I've said, a fishwoman could be made to look cute or hot or however Oda wants. It all depends on how her face looks and what color her skin is.

Then again a mermaid COULD work. She could be older than 30 but still somewhat hot, or at least not particularly "old" looking. I mean Hina is 32 and she's quite the good looking lady. Alvida can't be younger than 30, and Bellemere wasn't particularly young either.

OR it could be a really young mermaid who, in a rare occurance, has gained the ability to walk on land early.

There's many ways for this to go.

It was stated in an SBS that not more than one person can receive the powers of a Devil Fruit, not even by biting at the same time! The one who digs in a millisecond before the other gets the power, the other one just gets the bad taste.

Yes, it was also stated that there's only one of each fruit at any given time. That's why the animators have to consult Oda before introducing new DFs in filler arcs.

Well… I'm pretty sure that there's only one of each kind of DF. That means there's likely no second human-human fruit. I'm still thinking that it could be a human with a fish-fish fruit, but that would also mean being able to transform into a full fish that is hated by the sea, which would make it sort of pointless. I'm still thinking that there's going to be a new nakama of some sort after this next arc, but I dunno what yet. Seriously, the time in between Robin and Franky joining was just too long.

She/he could be young as a teen when she/he joins with her fins separated into feet, because of her half-breed body… as mother as human and father as merman it could make the baby born with feet with fins or her fin could separate at a young age...

This would make him/her an outcast witch would fit the strawhat pirates profiles also when an outcast he/she could prolly find comfort in singing or playing an instrument...

Also being a hybrid of fishmen and humans she/he might be double the strength of a fishman because of the gene changeing.... like a liger, half tiger half lion but double the size

I don't understand why you guys think that there's a lack of female characters. This is shounen afterall, and the fans usually prefer the male characters. Just look at the japanese character poll and you know what I mean.

Personnelly, while I would like to see another female, I prefer to see males… But being female myself that pretty much sums up why I say that.

Merman would be arkward on the ship. A fishman would be a better choice. Unless the Merman was over 30, your pretty much stuck with someone who can't walk around on land. Useless to your crew. A fishman on the otherhand. Most hate humans, Luffy wouldn't get on with most of them.

I don't want to see the next arc... Here come the 'next crewmember' routines where everyone tries to guess who will join. Lets all agree not to groan if Oda lets slip a whole island of possibilities.

When the same question was asked some time ago, he said "a robot manga".....
So, we can guess that Robot - Franky......and the next crew is an Obahan, maybe a old marmaid lady.....
