Does anyone else think (or is hoping for) a more serious tone in One Piece once they enter the New World? I don't mean like, taking out all of the jokes and killing people left and right, but maybe just putting a slight serious tone on it, not only to show how the Straw Hat's journey has matured, but also to please some of their older audiences. Then again, one of the reasons I watch this show is because how light hearted it is. But, I think it can be just as light hearted if not more so by putting on a more serious tone. If the bad guys get badder, then the victory would be all the more sweet at the end.
More serious tone?

In case you haven't noticed, OP has become much more serious as time went along. Things went from Buggy bullying Shushu to a man's ambition with Krieg, murder with Arlong then great justice in Arabasta. There was the ousting of an oppressive ruler in Skypiea, to the break up of the crew in Water 7.
It'll never get Bleach serious if that's what your thinking. OP will always fluctuate between 40% adventure, 20% action, 20% comedy and 10% seriousness. Compare with Berserk, 60% action, 35% drama and 5% comedy.

What's the other 10%?

That's true, and I wasn't suggesting it would get bleach serious, but maybe upping the seriousness a little bit. Using your chart, let's say 15% seriousness maybe…..

The whole direction the story is going at now already seems to be more serious. First you have the war with whitebeard. Both sides of the war are going to sustain heavy damage, but seeing the effect on the balance of powers is hard to guess until the war is actually over. With the whole tennrybuuito affair i can see more problems for the WG if rayleigh manages to take out an admiral & the fleet…One Piece will probably become more chaotic, and as a whole more serious.

Well, slaves in the current arc are pretty serious, I'd say.

Well considering how we have been in a slave ring for like 10-15 chapters or whatever. And we have seen (Sanji's bounty poster in person, whole crew crying in how awesome Gaon cannon is, Surjury face kick, bikes made of bubbles, eating Shakkies food without asking, the amusement park fun, Zoro lost, Male fake mermaid, during a fight Luffy just is curious about a bear, and i"m sure others)
Even though there is maybe some serious stuff going on aroudn them. It doesn't really effect the strawhats too much. They are still dumb and funny. I don't think it will ever change. the only time they are ever serious is when they are fighting for something important such as saving Robin, camie, ect. And even then they have their funny moments such as bear incident.

An oppressive government, slavery, racism, and public executions in this arc already…if One Piece were given a movie rating right now it would be PG-13. The manga is 11 years old. Children that began reading One Piece when it started out would all be adults by now. Oda no doubt realised long ago that his fan base was at the youngest, teenagers. Teenagers who read OP back then are now adults so the outcry for a more mature style is to be expected.
Will One Piece ever grow into an R rated bloody gore-fest even for a few chapters? No. Is it going to continue to mirror real-life issues as it has for a long time in a PG-13 manner? Yes.
Would I prefer One Piece to be R rated? Sure. I myself am a 21 year old Criminal Justice major and have already seen some pretty graphic things in real life so an artistic drawing of a brutal death wont distract me from a great story like it can for others.
If Zoro just started disemboweling people it could turn many people off and lose them lots of money. Remember than this is a business and OP's success is largely due to Oda's ability to attract such a wide audience. OP is about as mainstream as you get with Manga. Think of the difference it would make if Heroes were on HBO instead of NBC. There'd be a much smaller fanbase and a lot less money to be made but they would be able to show much more graphic deaths and the tone would be even darker.

(how you ppl manage to spell the Terybusomething)
Here's a trick; break it up
Ten-ryuu-bito
And yes, I do realize that there is a more serious tone now. I've actually had this question in my mind for awhile now, like, since…..I don't know, just for awhile, and I've been wanting to ask it, I just didn't realize that the answer was in front of my face all along.
Thanks for your argument points though (as in, has OP become more serious or not)
