A lot of those were actually valid complaints… though it's kind of funny that only one of them (unending power levels) actually applies to the manga.

yes but i think the endless energy supply was…partly true..partly, and being destroyed in a grand fashion usually is what happens.....EX: Frieza, Cell, Majin buu.
But i think they missed an important point, later on in the series.... During the cell saga cell got to absorb an android, the hot , yet beautiful, android 18 .
Because of Vegeta's arrogance, which of course later happens in the Majin buu saga, and Fusion saga, and the kid buu saga, need i say more?
Also, the prolonging of the story became rather irritating, but it was fun though nonetheless, but at one point you gotta say, when will this villan die. Enough transformations, get the bashing lol.
But about the dub... the dub i thought was better than the Jap, along with the music that Bruce Falconer made. I personally thought it was an overall improvement.
Well, this is my opinon so  i would like to hear others as well

Is a D? an E? no it's Super F….oh well your not the first.

Recycled, Predictable Plot
Was blatantly wrong.
sandai-not SO much, cause Cell looked (in certain terms of story) like another version of Freeza.
I heard it shouldve ended at Namek.Far beter.I LIKED the androids, but, well, then came Cell and it was all kinda same-same.I made a blog entry at NF about it.

True but here's what I found a problem with particularly in
Recycled, Predictable Plot
Bad aliens travel to earth and want to destroy it.
Was never really like that
The only person who would fit that bill is Cell and Cell's not an alien.
Poor earthlings die and/or Earth is destroyed.
The latter disregarding GT only happened once.
The heroes fight on and transform to the next level of Super Saiyan-ness…
Super Saiyan only came into the picture in the later half of the Freeza saga.
and wasn't really relied on much to defeat certain villains
…But only after many episodes, long periods of charging up, much explanation, and hours of floating battles.
Bullshit,Bullshit, & Bullshit.
Bad guy(s) vanquished in grand fashion.
Is that supposed to be a bad thing?
Even more shocking was the writer's acceptance of the FMA anime ending
and taking shots at One Piece and Naruto over length.
In my view, DBZ's transformation from an adventure manga to a fighting/action one wasn't a pleasing change (less interesting), but DBZ was really the first kind of over the top masochistic slug fest in anime history. My beef was it was too over the top and everything after Freiza felt like (albeit interesting) filler and was too outrageous to hold much interest.
There's plenty wrong with it. Dragon Ball was an adventure-Fantasy comedy/action series that turned into a bad action show.
There's the thing with Goku and Piccalo(SP?) being revealed to have been from outer space. Fights not being all that interesting and dragging on longer than they should have, poor writing, stuff like constant deaths of characters only to be revived later, plus characters like Krillan, Piccalo, Yamcha, Chao-Su(SP?), Tien, Bulma, Master Roshi etc losing all of their spot light and just becoming side characters.
There's the thing with Goku and Piccalo(SP?) being revealed to have been from outer space.
I never really understood why people complain about explaining the origins of Goku & Kami is a lot better than just leaving two unfilled holes.
poor writing, stuff like constant deaths of characters only to be revived later
Think about it if you had a character that you really like in the series that got killed and not get brought back would that sit right with you.
plus characters like Krillan, Piccalo, Yamcha, Chao-Su(SP?), Tien, Bulma, Master Roshi etc losing all of their spot light and just becoming side characters.
Yamcha*
Krillin*
Chaozu
Tienshihan
Master Roshi*
*Yamcha was a useless character anyhow who unfortunately winds up becoming cannon fodder.
*Krillin I really don't see with Toriyama could do with a character who was somewhat stronger than Yamcha but weaker than Tienshihan
*Muten Roshi well after the 22nd Budokai you pretty much knew he was going to have his role reduced.
@Sandai:

You may wanna add Lunch/(launch..not sure) to that list too. =P
Well Lunch is kind of difficult to put in there given that she didn't play that big of a role in the series other than being a love interest to Tien this more or less explains why she was never featured in the manga after the 1st part.
@Sandai:

You can explain it and have it be good.
Think about it if you had a character that you really like in the series that got killed and not get brought back would that sit right with you.
I would rather have you die and have good development and impact on the plot then for you to just die and come back, that's lame.
Yamcha*
Krillin*
Chaozu
Tienshihan
Master Roshi**Yamcha was a useless character anyhow who unfortunately winds up becoming cannon fodder.
Still he was a main character and more could easily have been done with him.
*Krillin I really don't see with Toriyama could do with a character who was somewhat stronger than Yamcha but weaker than Tienshihan
What does how strong he is have to do with it?
*Muten Roshi well after the 22nd Budokai you pretty much knew he was going to have his role reduced.Even still, he was the master. And the creator of the freaking Kamehameha!
You can explain it and have it be good.
Explain what?
What does how strong he is have to do with it?
Let me put that another way Krillin was basically a stronger, slightly more
important, & relevant version of Yamcha.
And the creator of the freaking Kamehameha!
I don't really see how his being the creator of the Kamehameha should've kept his role on the same level it was prior to the second tournament arc, it was basically a passing of the torch scenario.
@Sandai:

Recycled, Predictable Plot
Was blatantly wrong.
I said "a lot," not "all.
Let's see…
Unending Power Levels-
Do I even have to explain? by the end of the series, Goku is stronger than God. Literally.
Animation recycling-
Again, another obvious one. Doesn't bother me as much as it does a lot of other people, but it is an issue.
Never fucking ENDING-
Um, the manga got forcibly extended for two arcs past its intended conclusion, and then we got the shitpile that is GT after that was through.
And then within the anime itself, fights dragged on for fucking EVER. Remember how Namek was supposed to explode in five minutes or whatever it was?
The Dub-
AGHAGHGAHAHGAGAHGAHAGHAGAHAGAGAHAHGAHAGH MY EARS
The first bit was tolerable, but then Funi moved to Texas and it all turned to shit.
sandai-
"Bad aliens travel to earth and want to destroy it."
this aplies to one of the movies,at least (Lord Slug),plus Freeza with King Cold. And Broly could count in that as well.
"Poor earthlings die and/or Earth is destroyed"
the poor earthlings thing aplies, though. The whole of the worlds population was killed by Buu,lots by Cell,
"But only after many episodes, long periods of charging up, much explanation, and hours of floating battles."
again-eternity of charging the genki dama at BOTH Namek AND in the fight with Buu.

now with this I can agree.
Dark Lord Zenigame -hes stronger a LONG time before the end of the series.
and I think GT-well it at least TRIED to return to DB's origins. But it had to go with modern trends,it was made a LONG TIME AFTER Dragonball.
Never fucking ENDING-

Um, GT was never in the manga.

and, she…um...Yeah, that's true.
Lunch's exclusion was anoying.stil, beter of to think she packed her bags and went to somewhere more promising (smiley)-but DIDNT we see her in the background somewhere?
sandai-
"Bad aliens travel to earth and want to destroy it."

The movies aren't canon

"But only after many episodes, long periods of charging up, much explanation, and hours of floating battles."

Some people just can't let things go.
sandai-were talking about the anime as well, right ?YOU brought GT into this (sorta) .
ps:whats with the "er;857359Lobolov" crap?
excuse me?let it go?those were two intended endings of the series and yet they end in the same manner.WHY should I let it go,if its ture and this is about DB's faults?
I disregarded it in case anyone was going to count the earth being destroyed
in GT.
excuse me?let it go?those were two intended endings of the series and yet they end in the same manner.
Frieza's body didn't break up after being hit with a Genki Dama unlike Kid Buu.
ps:whats with the "er;857359Lobolov" crap?
screwed up using your name in the quote tags.
so?not breaking up is a GOOD thing? It was at an intended end of a series and the genki dama was the final move, and it took an eternity to make it.that thins a detail.
It was at an intended end of a series and the genki dama was the final move, and it took an eternity to make it.that thins a detail.
The Genki Dama was intended to be the final move against Vegeta and we all know how that turned out.
I suppose if one only focused on the Z half those points are more valid. When I think of Dragonball I tend to put Z and the original together, so I don't quite share their opinion.
Anybody could write an article about what's wrong with Dragonball Z. Let's see if the same person will write about what is good.
In my opinion, IGN's anime articles are all laughably bad to begin with. Including their episode reviews.
I like how it's supposed to be "professional", but they're just ranting about the same shit that people have already heard a million times before.

You should read their review of Ultimate Ninja 3
Well, pretty much all of their story based complaints are correct but…I thought that's why people liked it.
I, for one, probably would've been mad if it had a "definitive" ending rather than one that doesn't really seem like an ending.
That's actually some really valid complaints.
Good job IGN, for actually doing something right.
@Sandai:
The Genki Dama was intended to be the final move against Vegeta and we all know how that turned out.
paraphrased from King Kai during the Vegeta saga
"Be careful with that attack Goku! One false move and you could blow up the planet!"
Pfft yeah when did THAT ever happen?
They are completely right about Frieza. I remember when I was a little kid watching DBZ, my friend (another DBZ fanatic) and I had discussions over his gender. Good times…
I don't agree with them saying One Piece has been going on too long, not because I'm a fan but because it hasn't, unlike DBZ and Naruto the OP anime doesn't drag on to the point you go "My fucking god, just end already!". While it does have its moments, it does really good, especially for it's length.
Those are all very accurate complaints as far as the anime goes, but ya know, but pretty much every single shonen anime adaption has them.
I actually enjoyed the filler of DBZ. It must be the series with my favorite filler episodes ever.
I honestly through the Frieza saga was the best season in terms of storytelling. The rest was just flashy action, though the adriod arc did have some good points.
I think the only thing bad about DBZ was the fact that they included the Buu saga. I mean I'll admit they did it well, but it just didn't seem necessary. They didn't need to make Goku the most powerful man in the universe, it would have been so much better if Gohan remained the strongest warrior on Earth.
Though the only DB series that I absolutely despise is the GT series. If IGN should have criticized any franchise, it should have been GT.
@Sandai:
You should read their review of Ultimate Ninja 3
Wow I just read it.
2 impressions came to mind when reading this. How much do these guys suck at this and you don't play the damn story mode. The only real reason to play it is the unlock more stuff so that the game is fun.
I used to LOVE<3333333:wub::wub::wub::wub::wub::wub:wubblywubblewuff!
DBZ, but then one day my dad sat and predicted each of Goku's and Frieza's attacks on each other. Then it was all like "wth? this is so stupid!"
I agree with all points in the article.
=]
I remember back in high school I loved DBZ. It was the thing I'd watch EVERY DAY when I got home aside from Pokemon and Yugioh. Those were the days. I remember that the Goku vs Frieza fight felt a little dragged but overall I never stopped watching.
Kazu-exactly.Buu is the greatest crime against storytellkng and character development in the history of history.
your posts are the biggest crime against history
Anyway, Buu was by far the villain with the most development. I just never felt that Frieza and Cell were great to start with.
I meant Kid Buu-at the end,he was realy this "IMA DESTROYIN EVRTHIN CUZ ITZ FUN!" .
They are completely right about Frieza. I remember when I was a little kid watching DBZ, my friend (another DBZ fanatic) and I had discussions over his gender. Good times…

Well was you expecting him t have the same level of Self control as the other Buu's.
Actually, the Buu arc may be my favorite one. This is likely just cause I really liked Buu as a villain. I think he was the most original villain in that series.
I kinda liked Cell too, didn't care for Freeza though.
Buu was great. Except Kid Buu..
He didn't even talk.
I liked Kid Buu, he was nuts.
Although, Evil Buu was awesome. He needed more screentime.
Kid Buu got owned by Hercule and a dog.
One nice punch to the face, and bite to the head antenna

@FAILFAIL:
But does the fact that something isn't supposed to be offensive make it any less so? Does "it's only a joke" or "they don't know any better" absolve all guilt?
That just screams fail.
Honestly, I don't think I'm the only one who doesn't see anything racist about Mr. Popo.
I do agree with the female characters bit though :ermm:
~did not want to know what chichi meant~
Chichi is what kids call breasts, if that helps. XD
