It would appear this episode is a love or hate episode.

I'd say it was a meh episode.
Love the Shandian's dialouge. Thought the Sanji kick's dialouge was cheesy. (DeLiCioUs!)
Everything else is passable I'd say.
I'm sorry, I still can't stand the Wyler thing dammit. Wiper is such a cool name.
-
Hey, does anyone have screenshots of the credits from the other two episodes Wiper's been in so far? Because I could've sworn he was credited as "Wyper" in one of those…
And speaking of him...his voice is ok, but I hate him anyways so I really don't care about his voice or the name change. XD
-
So I missed the episode yesterday cause I was replying to some rather long PMs and emails. Could someone outline what happened? Or at least is it up on veoh yet?
-
This post is deleted!
-
I'm loving how people are saying Wiper is such a cool and badass name and Wyler isn't. Guess people like their badass names to be connected to dirty asses instead of yelling.

Well, it was the episode where Sanji defeats Satori. What exactly do you want to know?
-

Well basically what changes were there from mildly and insignificant to "ZOMG THE DUB IS BUTCHERED!"
I'm guessing the episode was pretty much intact overall though.

LMAO
I really dont care exept it's left over 4kids. I thought the ep was prety good. Is it just me or is chopper sounding a little to girly?
-
I was disappointed with Sanji's speech.
Oh well.
-

As far as content goes, they edited out the lance going through Gan Fall's back. Basically, it looks like he was just stabbed with a flaming lance instead of completely impaled by a flaming lance.
They also cut out some of the damage effects of Sanji's kick.
Oh, something I forgot to mention before. When Chopper and Pierre were considering going down to save Gan Fall they changed the dialogue Shura. It's basically the same idea, but he makes no reference to the fact that they're both Devil Fruit users.
-
@AWB:
I was disappointed with Sanji's speech.
Oh well.
speaking of which. What's this delicious line I'm hearing about?
-
@Yan:
At least his name's still Calgara.
It's Kalgara, or at least in the Closed Captions, I got to watch the episode at a Friend's house. Also "Gun Fall" appeared once or twice in the Closed Captions.
-
speaking of which. What's this delicious line I'm hearing about?
When Sanji hits Satori on his head, he shouts out 'Delicious!' (<3)
-
Aethos, you can't download Chibigoku's link?
-
Yeah, he didn't shout out "Concauser". They left in the kick too, so I would've been perfect, even without Satori reeling back. Oh, well.
-
@Lobster:
Aethos, you can't download Chibigoku's link?
I'd rather watch it on veoh orr youtube than take the time to download it.
-
"De~licious~!" is better than "Concasse" ever could be.
-
I'd rather watch it on veoh orr youtube than take the time to download it.
It only takes me about 1 minute to download it. :E
Youtube takes longer to stream it for me..Anyway, I loved Sanji's DEEELLLLLLLLICIOUSSS line~
-
Okay I just saw it on Veoh and I have to admit it was a damn good episode. I didn't see really anything wrong with it. Robin didn't sound bitchy to me at all. The delicious line was rather fitting. I also thought Wiper's voice was rather fitting and the whole loftra and wyler thing doesn't really bug me cause that'll be fixed on the DVDs.
Overall it was a great episode.
-
@Lobster:

Yeah, but who said that Aethos's internet-connection is as fast as yours? I can say that mine most certainly isn't. It usually takes at least 30 minutes to download ChibiGoku's episodes, and several hours to get the higher-quality ones. (I live in the middle of nowhere.)
On-topic: This episode was pretty good in my opinion. But then again, I think so for every single episode. The negative thing: Wyler. Once again, CURSE YOU 4KIDS!!!!!!!!!
-
"De~licious~!" is better than "Concasse" ever could be.
Irrelevant. It's not the right line.
-
@Chibi:
Hey, does anyone have screenshots of the credits from the other two episodes Wiper's been in so far? Because I could've sworn he was credited as "Wyper" in one of those…
In his first (masked) appearance, he was credited as "Wyper." This week, he was credited as "Wyler."
It's Kalgara, or at least in the Closed Captions, I got to watch the episode at a Friend's house. Also "Gun Fall" appeared once or twice in the Closed Captions.
"Gan Fall" came up as the credited name.
Regarding Wiper's voice, yeah. It's…really not that memorable. I WASN'T SO CRAZY FOR HOPING FOR SCOTT MCNEIL NOW, WAS I? :sad:
9HiMg5xMK0M -
AYou were right Tsukento,Scott Mcneil would've done a good job as Wiper.
-
Meh I think Wiper sounds fine. As others have said neither his Japanese nor english voice is all that memorable, but Wiper does sound pretty close to the Japanese version that it fits.
-
Hmm, just watched it on Veoh.
Not all that impressed this week. But whatever. Next week looks good, so I'll tune in then.
-
I wonder if Zoro's gonna pull another Zarbon on us
-
Anybody notice in the preview the unedited guns and bazookas? Totally awesome right there.
-
@The:

Uh…we saw guns before this episode. o_o;
-
we did? o_o
…....
D'oh, my bad. forgot about those.
-
Wait, isn't Wiper's voice the same as Gedastu?
-
About the maps in the beginning.
I know FUNimation said that you could change the logo on the DVD versions by hitting the angle button on your DVD remote. Do you think they'll do that with the maps in the beginning of the episodes? Switch back and forth between English and Japanese?
-
It'll be fun once the survival game starts as it's going to be impossible for Funi to not show all the weapon fire and everything.
-
Thanks to ChibiGoku's continuing efforts, I got to watch the episode after forgetting there was one. So on to my thoughts.
Good episode. All the actors did fine this week. Editing wasn't bad either. Personally didn't have any problem with Robin's delivery, but that's just my thoughts and that's all I have to say about that. :P Thought Wyler's (Lawl) voice actor sounded a bit odd, but it was fine. Aisa was cute (Upper Yard? What Upper Yard?! I didn't go to Upper Yard!) Shandian's all sounded good. Satori sounded as homicidal as ever. :D Sanji's speech at the end was pretty well done. IQ Love Test is just laughably bad, but I'll live. XD Glad the final kick was untouched, aside from the removal of the reaction shot. Have to admit I liked the delivery of the "Delicious" line. Would've liked the attack name, but it's fine.
-
Irrelevant. It's not the right line.
Wait, so quality is irrelevant as long as it's as close as possible to the original? I don't think I can agree with that. I mean, we're all One Piece fans, right? We think it's a good show. But surely we aren't so keen that we think that improving it is impossible?
There are parts of it that some of us don't like so much, and if this translation can find some way of improving them, well why shouldn't they take liberties?As for 'bitching' on the discussion thread, I'll add this: It is VERY wearing when all that anyone chooses to post is:
"Hm. OK episode. Nothing offended me this week."
or,
"They changed a letter in a character's name to a different letter! This dub is being RAPED and MASSACRED! That letter was like a father to me! How DARE they!"
…neither of which are very helpful, constructive, or interesting to read. which I guess is why people don't like them.As for my opinion, let me see...
As my comment above suggests, I'll take a coherent English sentence over a single word in another language any day. Just as long as they don't make a habit of it...
And yes, Wiper is a dumb name. It's easy to ignore when all the dialogue is in a foreign language, but you have that in English dialogue and it's going to make people think he should be keeping a windscreen clean somewhere. Which is hardly 'badass', is it?
And 'Loftra' is just as meaningless to me as 'Shandia', so I don't really have a strong opinion on that.
Also, for my part, I like that Robin is a little more outspoken in this dub. She was essentially a cipher who occasionally delivered exposition all the way up to meeting Ao Kiji before, so I can see why they'd try to make her dialogue a little more lively.
As for the violence edits, should we not just get used to them? Lighten up, it's a kids' show. If you want more bloody impalements or whatever, just wait for the DVDs.Lastly, there's something I think we've lost sight of here: Most English translations of anime (especially those being marketed for children) are really, really bad. We're lucky because the show we like is getting what is generally a pretty good one.
-
Charagon doesn't care about the tv edit. Not sure why you're lecturing him about that…
-

That's not Funi's job. Funi's job is to create an accurate English adaptation. Not to take liberties with the script/story/characters or to 'fix' the show. Especially since 9 times out of 10 their 'fixes' are either worse or merely neutral. It has been an extremely rare occasion that they've changed something for the better.
For example, this week's big topic is "Delicious" vs "Concasse". Delicious is fine, but I'm not sure it's good enough to justify deviating from the original script. If they're going to make these little changes (And to be perfectly clear, this is about the extent of the changes I'm comfortable with them making. Doing a 180 on Robin's personality is completely unacceptable.) then they have to be so good that it's worth deviating from the original to make them.
Honestly though, it's not that Delicious that bothers me so much as they changed the whole set-up for the line. In the original Sanji was literally taking about cooking, which was way cooler than some trite dialogue about revenge being served.

….............
Are you aware of what decade it is? Most English translations of anime are really, really good nowadays.
-

He didn't actually say revenge. It was implied, but it sounded pretty close to a cooking monologue to me.

This statement contains truth.
-
"Revenge is a dish best served cold"
That's what Funi was trying to say..
-
It did sound like cooking:
Sanji: I got a question, do you ever cook? Well you don't have to be a chef to know which dish is best served cold. You know this dish is quite simple. Step one, season the main course with a smattering of defeat. Then you must brutally and without hesitation tenderize the meat.
Seee, cooking! :O
-
He didn't actually say revenge.
I didn't say he did. I said the line was about revenge being served. Which it was.
@The:

Of course! I forgot! I keep defeat in the cupboard right next to the garlic salt and olive oil. It's great for stir fry.
-
I didn't say he did. I said the line was about revenge being served. Which it was.
Yeah, I know. I said it was implied. I got a similar vibe from reading the Manga, though. I remember "brutally tenderizing the meat" pretty well.
-
Except he didn't mention meat at all in the original.
Kind of going off on a tangent, but is Sanji's attack "concasser" or "concasse"? I've seen it both ways. They're basically the same word, just concasse is the present form of concasser, but I wanted to make sure.
Was an alright episode to me. I admit, Sanji's speech at the end did kind of disappoint me. It wasn't bad and it was delivered well enough, but it's obvious it was a metaphor for revenge which made it kind of cheesy. XD I don't know, I liked his speech in the original version because even though he was talking about a specific recipe, he still made it fit with the situation, in which he literally crushed Satori like he would crush peppers for a mignonette. But, uh, that's just me.
Everything else was good though! Didn't think Robin sounded too harsh at all this episode (and that's all I'm saying about that). I like the voices for the Shandians so far. Don't really care about the Loftra/Wyler thing since a rose by any other name smells just a sweet and all. I don't think it's a big deal to complain about, especially since it's only for the broadcast version (though I admit there weren't that many complaints about it so far).

…I'm trying to decide if you're being sarcastic or not.
If you're not, then I guess thanks!

Good job, Cartoon Network. Despite me loving this series, I don't think I'll be watching this version anymore. Atleast not with the same enthusiasm. I can tolerate the necessary evil of the 4kids names and terms as long as they're fixed on the dvds,but the dissorienting fight sequences where they flash and skip around so much, I cant even tell exactly what happened without watching the Japanese version is just unforgivable and completely ruins any enjoyment you get from watching the battles.
Not to mention, one of One Piece's trademarks was showing the devestating power behind every single blow in a fight.With the way things are watching this show on tv is like watching the series without the fights and with anything edgy edited out. Not to mention the script writing is occasionally not as polished or they take too many liberties for my taste. Sanji screaming "DELICIOUS" instead of concesieur just annoyed me to no end and I'm pretty sure that dialogue was originally alot cooler from what I remember. There are great voices like Nami, Zoro, Robin(the lines she gets suck but the UA proves the voice itself is a perfect fit), and Usopp but the rest arent quite as strong as I'd hoped. Specifically Luffy which has some strong moments but just isnt doing my favorite character justice, the way I really hoped Colleen would eventually. It just isnt one of Funi's best the way I had hoped.
It sucks that OP never gets top tier treatment in the west. I really wanted to finally enjoy this series in english,but just like when Viz started making bonehead moves like going with Zolo and trying to sync up with the 4kids anime, I've been so turned off I'm probably just gonna give up and ignore the english version despite wanting to support the series. -

I expect better from you, Ao Kiji.
-
-Candlejack, I wasn't being sarcastic
-Ao Kiji, you're lying and will continue watching. But I do understand your complaints about the edits.
-RomanGod 4 brawl -
The violence edits were even handled well this time. Gan Fall was still stabbed (yes, not impaled, but still stabbed) and they even let Sanji's kick connect without a flash.
Yes, Satori reeling back was cut. But I'd put that more under FUNi not wanting to edit the flowing blood in that scene.
-

You couldn't even tell that he was stabbed. It just looked like Shura got close and he fell.
