@Demon:
K-F does Decent, it is kinda wierd that they leave Certain things untranslated (Nakama for Ex) but mostly, from what I've seen they only really leave Honorifics like San, Chan, Kun, and Ossan (the way Luffy uses it mostly is as an Honorific, IE: Ice-ossan) And, personally, with the Exception of Ossan, I don't think there really IS a way of translating All of those properly (Kun especially) so I agree with honorifics staying.
Never really said honorifics should be translated. Either keep them or don't.
However, "ossan" pretty much comes off as Luffy's way of being rather informal and is pretty much always used on someone older than he is. It's pretty much basically him calling them by the title "old man." So we would have "Giant Old Man" for Dorry and Broggy, "Weird Old Man" for Gan Fall, "Old Man Ice" for Iceburg and so forth.
@Demon:
And as for the people bitching about Swear words. Sometimes they ARE appropriate. It's all about Context, and vulgarity.
For example. there are SEVERAL different Words for "You": Anata, Kimi & Anta, Omae, Teme, Kisama, In order from most Proper, to least Vulgar. (I may be missing some, but these are enough to prove my point)
They're not exactly vulgur but more among the lines of being rather rude sounding or used in angry tones. Either way, this IS a kids show so they're not going to flat out use curse words to the degree K-F and other fansubbers of shounen anime have opted to do. There will be times when "damn" and sometimes even "bastard" would be used, but for the most part "damn" is the only one that really is ever mostly used out of swears. Anything else would be more inappropriate given the target audience.
It's really odd when you see a fansub for a non-shounen anime that has the same kind of tone used but can actually refrain from having the characters curse.
@Demon:
Anata is proper and Nice, Anta and Kimi are Informal, you use them between Friends, Omae is Vulgar, you'd use this with someone you don't particularly like, or if you're just a vulgar cad (Luffy uses this almost all the time)
It's not vulgar. It's just rude. o_o
@Demon:
and then There's "Teme" and "Kisama", you use these when you want to REALLY insult somebody. Teme (from what I've seen) is mostly used when adressing Girls, and Kisama is Towards guys.
Neither is gender related. They're pretty much used towards and by anyone. Though since we're talking about shounen series' like One Piece, you'll mostly hear it from guys. Either way, they're generally used in the form of an angry and rude tone. You'll usually hear it among the lines of a really angry sounding "Why you…!"
@Demon:
they're basically an Insult, so it's actually more correct to translate them as "You Bitch" "You Bastard" or simply "Bitch" and "Bastard". If you don't somehow make those into an insult, it's actually WRONG, since they are VERY vulgar insults.
While that would seem logical, I really hate to stress the fact that this is a kids show and all that. Blah blah blah.
And that's not necessarily true that you HAVE to make it an insult, considering that would be half-assed translating by not putting forth any thought into it at all.
@Demon:
Translating Luffy's famous line "I'm gonna kick his ass" is actually MORE appropriate because of how Vulgar Luffy usually speaks (using "Ore" and "Omae" all the time)
Sorry, but that's highly out of character for Luffy. Luffy's character is VERY similar to Son Goku's when it comes to fighting other people. Both characters use the same terms and what not, but for the most part "kicking ass" is actually not entirely correct as it doesn't fit their characters.
Granted, Goku speaks incorrectly at times due to how he grew up (using "Ora" and "Ome" instead of the more correct "Ore" and "Omae"), but they both say basically the same thing. The word "butobassu" is ALWAYS ending up being translated as "kicking ass" when the word DOES have an actual meaning behind it. The term is usually used in terms of just beating away at an opponent or as a decleration of giving them a beating. "I'm gonna kick your ass" really does sound highly out of character for people like Goku and Luffy, and especially Naruto as they're all likely to go with "I'm going to be the one send you flying/to beat you up/to clobber you/to pound you."
Hell, the really angry sounding toned ones could be translated as "I'm going to beat the hell out of you."
@Demon:
IE, if Luffy used "Watashi" or "Boku" for I, and "Anata" or "kimi" for you, I'd say make it "I'm gona clobber you" or "I'll send you flying!" but it's just not like that.
No, because "Watashi," "Boku," "Anata" and "Kimi" are all used in formal manners. Luffy is far from formal. But that doesn't mean they're used in vulgar manners as you've been suggesting. :\ Rude, yes. Vulgar, no.
