I forgot to mention in my first post: Wanze is the german word for some type of bug. It's the sort of bug you don't want to have in the kitchen.
One piece characters name meaning!

I'll start with some. I'm not saying I'm sure about this but it's oddly coincidental.
aokiji means blue pheasant, and I think he looks it too :D (he also wears a blue suit at all times and seems to love nature. Hence his bikerides on the ocean and his relaxed personality.
Sanji's alias: black leg and also cheff zeff (red leg) from the baratie were dirived from a lethal fighting style (lethal and dangerous for victim AND attacker) that is a lot like sanji's fighting style: Blood Leg
some think dracule "hawk eye" mihawk's name is derived from horus and that sanji is osiris and zoro (because of his hate for sanji) would be seth. The colors would be right and the relationships would be quite correct to, still, I believe this to be a little far fetched. Dracule obviously comes from dracula. And that is seemibly the case if you see his clothingstyle, black beard and white skin let alone the fact that he floats around alone (vampires aren't very sociable) in a coffin. "Hawk eye" could have something to do with or his fighting skill or his abilities. This could be because it is still not known if he ate a devil fruit. Mihawk I believe could stand for "mi hawk" –> "me hawk" So, mihawk is a hawk. ate a Zoan fruit perhaps??
Gecko Moria. Only thing I found was that Gecko is a computer based designing program used to add or remove shadows for more indept pictures or a lizzard that inhabits a desert and that moria is a cemetary in deadwood (historical note: the place where wild bill hickock died playing poker), south dakota. It has some more meanings but since he is the captain of thriller bark, I would keep my guess on cemetaries.
Nami: National alliance on mental illness: she is a crazy moneyloving wackjob :D
I also found out that in dogterms, there is a dograce that's called Nami "GOLDEN RETRIEVERS"!!!!!!!!! if you catch my drift :D
coincedence? I think not.Alvida was a female pirate that lived in the fifth century. She allegedly became a pirate because she fled when her father arranged a marriage for her. She was nicknamed: Alvida: the beautifull pirate
Blackbeards name is Marshall D. teach. Whitebeards name is Edward Newgate. The real blackbeard that roamed the sees in the true golden age of pirates name was Edward Teach. So their names are derived from the actual Blackbeard.
Roronoa Zoro's name comes from the actual French pirate Francois Lollonais. Zoro comes from the japanese zorome which means palindrome which is the french pirates birthday: 11 november: 11-11 = palindrome
Bartholomew Kuma is a character based on the true pirate bartholomew "black bart" Roberts. This pirate was also knows for being really religious that's why kuma (bear) is allways carrying his bible.
I'll keep on searching. If you have any, share it with us !!!!
Grtz -
Funny that you mention the Nami thing.
I actually took that picture. (Found it at a gas station in Nowhere, Kentucky.)
-
waaaah, that's sooo cool :D
I knew it, I was right all alog :D -
Luffy – "some reason" according to Oda.
Zoro -- a combination of Francois Lollonais and quite possibly the fictional character of the similar name, "Zorro" (which is Spanish for "fox")
Nami -- The Japanese word for "wave"
Usopp -- A combination of the Japanese word for "lie" and "Aesop", the Greek slave/storyteller famous for Aesop's Fables. (stories like "The Tortise and the Hare", and "The Boy who Cried Wolf" which I'm sure everyone has heard sometime in their life)
Sanji -- 3:00, snack time!
Tony Tony Chopper -- If you read/seen the Drum arc, Hiriluk explained this one. Tony comes from "Tonakai" the Japanese word for reindeer, and "Chopper" because his antlers looked like they could "chop down a tree".
Alvida -- I don't know all the details, but she was named after a real life pirate of the same name, so I've heard.
Thats all I got for now...
-
Also most of Oda's female characters are named after birds. I forgot which ones, but I do know that Kalifa is one of them.
-
Nojiko and I think Kuina are both named after birds as well.
-
Sanji – 3:00, snack time!
Is that what it means?
Anyway, Corgi was a man from the Government who worked with CP9. He could "sniff out" pirates. A Corgi is also the name of a type of dog.

I don't know about "Cutty Flam" but I'd always thought that "Franky" was a play on the "Flam" in his name. Franky got the nickname as a boy and I've thought that Franky/Furankii was a play on "Flam-kun/Furamu-kun." Though now I wonder if perhaps it's the other way around (Oda created the name "Franky", then "Flam").
I've seen people mention a ship called Cutty Sark so that's likely the Cutty.
Meanwhile, I'm thinking now that Oda decided on Flam after creating the name "Franky." It was a requirement to Franky's story that he have two names; one of which only those closest to him as a youth (Tom, Iceburg, Kokoro) ever called him by. The rest of Water Seven/the world knew him as Cutty Flam and never made the connection between the dead Flam and much buffer Franky when he came back a cyborg. Even CP9 might not have known, had Franky not given his real name when he came back to Water Seven.
So the logic could be that he comes up with "Franky" (perhaps from Frankenstein?) and then, needing a second name, creates the name "Flam", turning Franky into a play on "Flam-kun" as described above.
But that's just my guess/opinion. I could be wrong.
Sengoku's name could be an attempt at irony. "Sengoku" is, if I remember right, the Japanese "warring states" era. Fitting for a commander of an armed force such as the navy. yet in the same breath he's referred to as "the Bhudda", one of the most peaceful people around.
-
Actually Zoro's first name comes from the japanese word "zorome", which is a repetition of numbers. Zoro's birthday is November 11th, which is 11/11. And as mentioned already Roronoa comes from Francois Lollonais.
-
Their names? Well…their parents give them their names, so thats where they come from....no?
bucket of water is thrown over Local's head.

this was just a warning. the next time we will throw you in the drink.

Unbeatable: Enel is Hebrew for "There is no God", and the Enel (Ente Nazionale per l'energia ELettrica) is the third largest energy provider in the whole world.
-
I wonder if this was what Oda intended. Spandam's name can be spelled as "Panda" if you take the S and the M out. You also end up with the words S&M, similar to Spandam's mask. I doubt that it was really intended, since Spandam's mask already seems to be hinting at Mankind.
-
Nojiko and I think Kuina are both named after birds as well.
I think "Aissa" (that girl from skypia) is a birdsname. oh and "Tsuru" that very old woman working for sengoku is one too.
Bellemere is an easy one, though. her name means literally what she was for nami.I´m sure Vivi was named after the character from finalfantasy 9 XD
-
The only one I have any real comment on is Iceburg. Iceburgs look small and demure above the water, but can be absolutely huge and gargatuan below the surface.
Iceburg's laid back demeanor hides just how much he put into making W7 what it is in the present. You'd never believe from just looking at him, but W7 could not exist without him.
And no, Oda did not intend for Rob Lucci to mean "to steal the light". He said so in an SBS when a fan asked it of him. According to Oda, it was just one of those odd coincidences.
-
There's possibly also some irony in Iceburg's name. The greatest shipwright of the day named after a leading cause of sinking ships.
-
Also most of Oda's female characters are named after birds. I forgot which ones, but I do know that Kalifa is one of them.
Kiwi and Mozu are both named after birds, right? I think that was in an SBS at one point (And Kiwi is definitely a type of bird.).
-
@Bee's:

I think Oda just said that because he didn't want to tell the fan: "No really???? Thank you for telling me the meaning of the names I invented!!"
The problem is, Oda is absolutely obscure. He's possibly the most intelligent man down in whole Japan, but it always looks as if he wants that nobody notices that.
-
Oda also gets his name from real life pirates too!
-
Kalipha - Type of Bird
Nefertari Vivi - Most Beautiful
Soddam and Gammorah - The Two Biblical Cities that got destroyed in the Bible
Blueno - Blue Nose
Hatchi - Hatchi is "eight" in Japanese
Shanks - Like, your going to "shank" somebody
Kuma - BearThat's all for now~
-
@Lobster:
Soddam and Gammorah - The Two Biblical Cities that got destroyed in the Bible
Weren't they destroyed by a "rain" of fire? Sort of like the Buster Call on Enies Lobby.
-

Yup, destroyed by brimstone and fire.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodom_and_GomorrahI guess it's kind of like Enis Lobby. But… I don't think that Oda said he was going for that.
-
Here are the CP9 member names and the traslation for them (let me know which ones are already listed)
-Kalifa: named after a bird called the Kalij Pheasant (in German: Kalifasan)
-Fukurou: silent owl or gossip owl
-Kumadori: a type of makeup that is usually used for kabuki
-Blueno: I assume it comes from the color "brown" in German. I'm not so sure really -
I thought I heard that Funkfreed may have been named after a wrestler, I'm not sure though.

And here's one that has been mentioned so many times, but I feel like adding it to the list.
Rob Lucci. Lucci comes from the Italian word "luce", which means light. Rob can be used as in the way of "to steal", so Rob Lucci's name can mean "stealing the light".

Here's a one I bet nobody knew. Sir Crocodile's name comes from the crocodile!
-
@Crocodile15:

WRONG Crocodile's attacks are French. Oda was clearly making a pun off of the French language, in that, Sir Crocodile is always on the fast track to success.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Crocodile
EXAMPLE:Nefertari Vivi, "Wow, that businessman is quite the Crocodile."
Chaka, "It looks like that Crocodile knows all of the right places to locate cash flow".
Ao Koji, "That man is such a Crocodile. Just watch, and he will liquidate all of your frozen assets."
Moria, "My account book was litterally in stitches before I got re-enbursed for all of my missapropriated finances. Hah!! And my friends said I couldn't Crocodile myself out of that one (laughs) But I sure showed them. Now my life is back snapin' on the fast track to success!!"

I GOT
Is he the only Shichibukai with that type of hidden name thingy? Or was that just sort of a coincidence?
Also, I thought some of his attacks were in Spanish too.
-
@Crocodile15:

Well, he is for tonight…
But by tommorow, I'm sure that the others will too… :ninja: -
Carne, from the baratie, means "meat" in spanish
-
_> Crocodile's attacks are in Italian. Spada is Italian for sword. Sanji's attacks are French, and Robin's are in Spanish.
And no one uses the word "Crocodile" as a descriptive noun.
-
got some more :D
here goesbellamy:
samuel bellamy: born 1689 in devonshire was an English pirate and adventurer. Also known as
Black Sam or Black Samuel.Axe-hand morgan:
Comes from Sir Henry Morgan (Hari Morgan in Welsh), was a Welsh privateer, who made a name in the Caribbean
as a leader of buccaneers. He was among England's most notorious and successful privateers.Portgas D. Ace:
Comes from Bartolomeo Português. A portugese pirate that attacked Spanish ships in 1660Jesus Burgess:
Samuel Burgess: member of captain william kidd's crew when the Blessed William was seized.Van Auger:
Based on a pirate named John Auger. Not much is known about him. Only that he was captured at New Providence
and was given grace by woodes rogers. An ex-pirate that had become the gouvernour of the island.Lafitte:
Jean lafitte: pirate in the gulf of Mexico in the late 19th century.Another pirate related reference comes from the Shichibukai. They are loosely based on the privateers of
old Europe. The privateers were approved pirates, considered heroes in their homeland and pillagers
in others. Their main goal was to plunder the villages and towns of the then mighty country of Spain.Red Haired Shanks' flag is most probably based on the pirate flag of Calico Jack. The skull and the 2 swords.
There are also some place references.
It's quite obvious that water 7 is based on Venice, Italy
The Florian Triangle were ships dissapear is most probably based on the Bermuda Triangle.
Alabasta is based on an arabian countryThe giants of Elbaf I believe to be based on Vikings.
Sir crocodile Vs. Captain Hook (Peter Pan)?
Crocodile has a hook for his left hand and so does hook
crocodile keeps crocodiles, which could be a reference to Hooks mortal enemy: the crocodile.
In Peter Pan, shadows can also part with their owners. (Gecko Moria) -
Fleur is flower in french, not spanish, that would be flor otherwise
-
Yes, but all of her numbers are said in Spanish. I don't know why Oda used Fluer, and everything else was Spanish, but he did XD. Maybe just because Fluer sounds better :p.
-
I don't know about the Fish-Man himself, but I know the meanings behind the Arlong Pirates' names.
Kuroobi = Black Belt
Hatchan/Hachi = 8-chan/8
Chuu = Sound Effect for a kiss -
i cant believe these werent mentioned yet…
Bartholomew Kuma comes from Bartholomew Roberts, also known as Bart Roberts, a welsh pirate who raided shipping off the americas and west africa between 1719 and 1722.
Blackbeard aka Edward Teach , which is funny as oda split this name up..
making his blackbeards actual name "marshall" , and using "edward" for whitebeards name…Whitebeard also comes from Edward Teach
-
Anyone an idea from where Absalom's name comes from? Couldn't find a connection between him and a pirate. Maybe Oda took it directly from the Bible in which King David's son bears this name, but the OP-Absalom doesn't seem to bear any resemblance to the Biblical Absalom. ( well i guess…)

Astalon, from the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe~
-
What about Perona? I swear that I've heard her name used in another context.
-
@Lobster:
Astalon, from the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe~
Uh, that's Aslan.
The Biblical character's all I've got.
-
Perona= paranormal= somebody with unusual powers??? Not quite sure been doing research on ghost all of a sudden and Im trying to link her name to something whether is just play on words or something.
-
Ohm's name is derived from the word "Om" or "Am" which is a syllable in Hinduism that starts most mantras.
I think that other Skypiea Preist's names were taken from Hinduism as well, but I'm too lazy to research right now.

Gedatsu is the Japanese word for the Hindu moksa, liberation from the cycle of rebirths. I think Satori (enlightenment) comes from Buddhism rather than Hinduism. I'm not sure about Shura, but I think it comes from the Hindu/Buddhist Asura.

really? i thought it was connected to the unit for resistance in an electrical circut.
-
That was my initial thought too, and it may have been intended to have that double meaning, but given that all the other priests' names also have roots in eastern religion, I'm relatively sure the Hindu syllable was the primary influence.

Wait what's the origin of Cutty Flam again?

In Mypos, Luffy means 'Dance of Joy'.

Numfar!
(Sorry, couldn't resist)Adding to the name discussion. Along with being a lizard (Gecko), "Gekko" can also mean moonlight, fitting the theme of Thriller Bark.
