Didn't see a thread for this, so have at it.
This is a modern deviant from the typical Journey to the West Story. Goku is still the Seitein Taisei, but is no longer a monkey, but a special type of Youkai born in the same manner as the Monkey King. Tripitaka is now Genjo Sanzo, a foul-mouthed, chain-smoking punk who fights demons with a handgun. Friar Sand is now Sha Gojyo, a half-youkai, half-human who is a chain-smoker and a real ladies man, and Pigsy is now Cho Hakkai, a quiet, powerful man with his transforming white dragon, Jeep (Which can turn into a Jeep, obviously).
The story follows two basic storylines. The main plot centers around the Sanzo-Ikkou's efforts to reach China and stop the revival of Gyou-Maou, the Ox King, whose revival (Via a mix of Human technology and youkai magic) has caused most of the Youkai in Shangri-La (the land where the story takes place) to go mad and murderous. The revival is being performed by Ni Jianyi, an insanely brilliant but extremely eccentric human scientist, and Gyou-Maou's former mistress, Gyokumen Koshou, who has little regard for her daughter, Lirin, or her Step-son, Kougaiji, who only helps her because she had promised to revive his mother (Gyou-Maou's wife) from a terrible curse once Gyou-Maou had reawakened. Kougaiji has his own Ikkou, consisting of himself, his Half-sister Lirin, Dokugakuji, a youkai swordsmen (Who has a dark past), and Yaone, a youkai shaman whose past really hasn't been explored yet.
The 2nd plot centers around Ni Jianyi and his former persona, Sanzo Ukoku, who has a fair influence on 99.9% of the plot in the series. It also involves Genjo Sanzo's recovery of the sutra that was lost when his master, Sanzo Kenyuu was killed 12 years before the beginning of the manga.
It's a great manga, although the artist tends to do stereotypical pretty boys for the males and huge-breasted women for the females. Even Lirin has huge knockers.
Not that I'm complaining about the latter.
