I know we have translations and all, but pretty much every other popular series has scanlation groups and honestly Null is average at best. Wish there was another dedicated group doing this.
Why don't any great scanlations exist for the One Piece manga?

define 'great' for me please.

Taking the time to translate and word every line as accurately as possible, and keeping this level of quality consistent. Null is okay, I just wish we had something better.

I personally like the scans from OPHQ. I'd like volumes 3-20 rescanlated to replace the shite that is currently available, but it somehow seems unlikely.
One piece has a pretty decent scanlating base, though. As long as we're not stuck with that aformentioned quality, I'm happy
-
The problem is hard to pinpoint. NULL's translations are great but there's not enough time dedicated to the project. they're currently over 10 chapters behind which is bad, all be it understandable (they have lives and other projects) as a fan it can be hard to take. That aside their quality is sublime.
If you think you have problems regarding OP you should look at a few of the other series, both bleach and naruto at last checked were kept up to date thanks to the MH scripts and Air Gear is some 20 chapters off the raw release, there's not even any speed scanner for Air Gear :(.
-
Oh come on. Be happy you even get what you get, so you can enjoy OP.
I find it pretty easy to buy the japanese tankos and use Stephen's translation, along with learning Japanese. Not to mention it's not so hard to remember the main idea of each bubble that was ever written in the series. :\
-
Okay…
1. You should be grateful you can even access translated up-to-date manga from across the world.
2. Go to One Piece HQ. Click manga translations. Anything that has an asterik next to it means it is scanned and translated in HIGH quality. That's the best you're gonna get... for now. -
also every chaptehr of op inculdes alot more words then thos populer series I guess you are thinking on honestly if we take one naruto chapter we can get all thos words into 1-2 pages of Op.
-
i think we have to be gratefull for people who spent their free time to do something that doesn't give nothing back except some thank you posts
get backers doesn't even have any scanlated chapters
-
I think it's probably seen as diminishing returns.
There's very little reason to do a high-quality rescanlation of anything up to Little Garden, at least, because you can just get the Viz release now.

I would prefer the online thing of stuff around Little Garden too. Remember, not everyone lives in America. Where I live in London, we are only up to about volume 6 or so. So I like to read ahead too, I just order volumes from America and sometimes there is a funny glitch-like thing where at my bookstore they have volumes above the current. Plus, sometimes if I don't have the volume and the new chapter gives a reference to past affiliations I like to quickly check out where they are refering too.

I agree with you on that. I'd pay a fair price for an officially-sanctioned CD of the manga. If nothing else, I'd assume it's easier if you're looking for something specific but don't know which volume it's in.

From where I am, i get easy access to mandarin/japanese version of OnePiece. But sadly my jap is not that great, and so I only buy the chinese version. Even for the chinese version I have to choose between three publishers; Singapore, Taiwan & Hong Kong. I personally find that the Taiwan version has the best translation (rented a few to compare & almost everyone told me so). i guess i can be considered lucky. hehe.
I BUY the manga but I still keep a digital copy of those I like. Unlike real manga, those in the computer can be read again & again & again - without having to worry about the comic book spine.
For online scanlation, I like NULL's scans but JoJoHot scans speed & quailty can't be match. Yet that is kinda unfair, Japanese is much easier to be translated in mandarin than to english.
You can't really bring out the puns in english.I have a number of half/full jap friends who read manga and I asked them to compare the english & mandarin translation(not only OnePiece), they mostly agree that the mandarin one retain the most meaning/favour (they would try to convince me that reading the original is the best & that I should continue to learn jap).
As for the english OnePiece community, I feel that NULL's scans are really very good. Sure you can say that there are scans with better translation, but I will wait for their scans because I can see their translators effort in conveying the sense of the original sentence.
It is also as a moral support to them for their years of effort in scanning HQ OnePiece. It will be alot better if the objective of this topic is to get more people to improve/help the current official scanlation group than to question/criticize/revolutionize.
Well just my thoughts on the topic. -

Someone should lock this thread. This guy is basically complaining, and people have given him valid suggestions.

Thing is, while Naruto and Bleach are both pretty good series, I don't consider either of them to be anywhere near as good as One Piece. Like their not even in the same league. One Piece constantly reaches levels of depth, creativity, storytelling, etc than either of those series could ever hope to reach. A lot of people just see it as "one of the big three" shonen and like it on a casual basis, but its a lot more than that.

Here's a more important question: What motivates you to whine and bitch about everything? You whine constantly about the FUNi dub, and now you're whining about Scanlations.
We have it pretty damn good that there are people willing to take the time out of their lives to give us scanlations, enough to do it every week, no less. We're also lucky that FUNimation wants One Piece to succeed in the states and not fuck with it like 4Kids did.
If you have such a problem with the quality of the scans, why don't you just learn Japanese and make HQ Scanlations yourself? Either put up or shut up.
Some people are just too fucking ungrateful for what they have.

I don't really mean to complain, just trying to figure out why most other manga series this popular seem to have so much more work put into scans (which there are usually multiple groups doing). Null is ok, its just something that strikes me as odd.
-
To the person who claimed there are no scanslations of Getbackers:
A couple of years back, the guy who scanslated Tenjho Tenge made scanslations of chapters 1-22.
-
Binktopia made a handful of absolutely amazing scans. Free with their translation but chock full of the spirit and attitude of the manga. Plus very well done.
-
What's with all this talk about gratitude? gratitude has absolutely nothing to do with anything here. it's someone's opinion and desire. you all need to jump off your high horses ffs. end of the day of NULL's last 25 releases only three were OP and Kefi's priority is Fairy Tale at the moment. It was a poor choice of words on the point of Skull Kid but perfectly understandable as to where he was coming from. As a fan, there's nothing wrong with questioning whether your benefactors feel the same way as you about the thing you love so dearly.
-
IAWTC… buuuuut...
I still have to say, Null seems pretty good to me. And also, that Cez and Kokotas particularly do a pretty bang-up job on weekly scans. I'm not sure what your criteria is, but a lot of other great series only have scanlations of Chinese reprints, with misspelled (or full-out incorrect) character names, terrible English, and low quality images (Jojo Part 3 and the first half of 4, for example :<<<<.) There's a lot of love and talent dedicated to making One Piece available worldwide in a way that respects the series, and I don't think you should discount that so easily.
-
OP isn't nearly as popular as Naruto or Bleach in the west.
The scanslations are good enough.
Someone lock this thread already. -

I wanted to say this too.
You people coming in here talking about "be grateful they're even scanlating ANYTHING" are completely missing the mark. Skull Kid rose a valid question, and it's something I've wondered about too. Why do Bleach and Naruto have such better scans and translations done FASTER than One Piece. Go look at Mangahelpers if you don't believe me. When there's a new raw, watch how fast the scans and trans come out compared to One Piece. It's a shame that this great manga, which surpasses those other two, doesn't have a strong following for being at the top.

Brother. You are one lucky mofo that Konis isn't here anymore or there'd be a shit-storm so far up your ass you'd be spittin' Mr. Hankey's by the dozen.
In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if this thread didn't set her Anti-Null Sentiments Alert off and she came back just to post in this thread. ducks
Why do Bleach and Naruto have such better scans and translations done FASTER than One Piece.
Because OP fans want to read shit and get on with their life instead of wallowing in their own greatness.
-
You guys might as well hang him him upside down and stick a pitch fork in is ass
-
well not that i have any experiencing in scanlating but…
Each OP chapter seems so much more packed then some other mangas. If you compare the backgrounds with Bleach and Naruto, OP has so much more detail. Also unlike most shonens, it seems that there is so much more dialect, especially compared to Naruto and Bleach (by no means am i meaning to bash these, but these 3 seem to be the biggest shonen right now)
Also the length of OP seems pretty itimidating to i bet.
-
Be grateful there are people translating the manga at all, Seriously.
and Null Does Decently, the only thing I ever saw of theirs that I just hated and thought was done in poor taste for no reason, was the Dialogue about the Afro in the Davy Back Fight.
Original JUMP version and Tankobon: "CHANPION ga AFURO nanoka. AFURO ga CHANPION nanoka…" or "The Champion is the Afro, or is it the Afro is the Chanpion..."
NULL: "They say the Blacks are Champs, or was it the Champs Are Blacks?"
Yeah, pretty stupid thing to put...
but other than that, Null does decent work... so be grateful for what you have
