Har. This is a (very) short little thing I did for my Creative Writing class. 'Tis a Legend of Zelda fan fiction, depicting my opinion of everyone's favourite annoying fairy sidekick. Looking at it again now, I think I could've found a better replacement for the word "Darknut" which I used about ten thousand times. Oh well. Despite its mediocrity, I hope you enjoy. Critiques are very welcome.
Steel bars fell across the door as Link entered the room. The youth jerked his head backward, cursing under his breath at the sealed door before turning his attention to the room. It was fairly simple, perfectly round with flat stone walls on which torches were placed at regular intervals. On the other side of the room was a door, covered by a large lock and several thick chains. In the center, sword held in front of its face at attention, was a Darknut, one of Ganondorf’s most powerful soldiers. It was very large, at least a meter taller than Link, and easily twice as wide. It was garbed in ebony plate armor with elaborate gold trim; a crimson crested helmet covered its head. A cape of sage green, emblazoned with a large eye colored pale yellow, hung from its shoulders. In its right hand was an immense great sword, the same eye emblem on the base of the shimmering blade. It looked up, grunting and holding its sword in front of it in challenge. Link dashed across the room, drawing out the Master Sword as he did. The youth pointed his sword at the Darknut, and tightened his grip on the Mirror Shield. Navi turned bright yellow as she bobbed around the Darknut’s head.
“Hey listen! Look out Link! Don’t get hit by the Darknut’s sword! It’ll hurt!”
Link’s eye twitched slightly at the statement of the obvious fact. The Darknut leapt forward, slashing downwards with its great sword. Link raised his shield, catching the large blade and forcing it from the monster’s grip. He grabbed the Darknut’s shoulder, using it as a balance to gracefully flip over its head. With three quick slashes of the Master Sword, the red tethers keeping the creature’s armor in place were cut and the now useless bits of metal fell to the ground, bouncing a few feet before disappearing in a plume of green smoke. Link plunged his sword into the Darknut’s shoulder, causing it to roar in anger and pain. Navi flew to Link’s shoulder, jingling loudly in his ear.
“Hey listen! Remove the Darknut’s armor to damage it!”
The momentary distraction allowed the Darknut to retrieve its fallen weapon. It slashed at Link, grazing his upper arm and part of his shoulder. Navi jingled again, and Link winced, both at the sound and the pain in his arm.
“Watch out Link!”
Link shook his head incredulously. He opened his mouth to speak, but the Darknut had resumed its attack, this time in the form of a wide horizontal slash, which Link parried with a vertical slice from the Master Sword, halting the great sword and leaving a long scratch along its blade. Link attempted to smash his shield against the creature, but it jumped backward, avoiding the blow and distancing itself from its green garbed enemy. Link frowned, replacing the Mirror Shield on his back, and pulling the Hookshot from his belt. He fired the weapon at the Darknut, a metal hook attached to a heavy chain flying from the end and burying into the Darknut’s chest. The Darknut looked up at Link and whimpered. The chain retracted, pulling Link forward, the Master Sword held high.Link brought his arm down, sinking the blade of evil’s bane into the creature’s chest. Link slid the blade and Hookshot from the Darknut and it fell to the ground before collapsed into dust, leaving behind a large iron key. Link kneeled, sheathing the Master Sword and Hookshot as he did so. He scooped up the key and Navi bounced happily in front of him.
“Link! You won the fight!”
Link flinched at the shrill sound of Navi’s voice and he nodded at the blue orb. The chained and locked door lay a few feet from Link. Navi flew to it and jingled for the thousandth time.
“Hey listen! You’ll need a key to open this door!”
Link’s hand twitched and he inserted the key in the lock. He turned it, and the chains and lock fell away. The door opened and Link entered the next room, this one virtually identical to the previous except for the door, which was covered by a large grey statue. Almost instantly Navi fluttered to an oddly colored panel on the wall, jingling loudly.
“Hey listen! It’s an oddly colored wall panel!”
Link’s entire right side flinched. Why wouldn’t the jingling stop? He drew the Boomerang from underneath his shield, pulling his arm back as he targeted the panel. He threw it, and it spun towards the panel, hitting it before returning to his outstretched hand. The panel began to glow and a column of light shot from it, landing on the ground in the center of the room. Link pulled the Mirror Shield from his back, stepping into the light and pointing his shield at the statue in front of the door. The light reflected off of the shield, hitting the statue, and causing it to crumble into nothingness. Navi hovered in front of Link’s head.
“Hey Link! The beam of light can be used to destroy certain objects.”
Link sighed and nodded, pushing open the door and stepping into the next room. The door flew shut, and Link glanced around the room. It was devoid of enemies, but at the very top of the ceiling was a small target. Navi popped out of Link’s hat, moving in front of his eyes, ringing loudly all the way.
“Hey listen! There’s an archery target! Hit it with your bow Link!”
Navi fluttered to the target, orbiting around it.
“Shoot it Link, shoot it!”
Link eye twitched, as he nocked an arrow in his bow. As he did this, Navi jingled again.
“HEY LISTEN! Shoot the target!”
Link drew the bow taut, and loosed an arrow. The bolt flew through the air, and with one last high pitched jingle Navi disappeared. Link smiled, collapsing onto his knees. Silence. At last, the jingling had stopped.
