Every people have their story of course. If you follow your own then it'd be fine with some and offensive to some. But that doesn't mater. What matters most is that nobody made a sin. I don't think it's a sin to offend somebody. I mean Thomas Acquianas once said that even friends offend each other (which I approve). Offending somebody is part of mother nature. Nobody can change it. Why not accept it instead.
Do people have the right to not be offended / annoyed?

This thread is exactly the same as the thread Taleran created about bad words.
Summery of both threads:
"I just want to do what I want to do and don't care what other people do as long as it doesn't cross my own personal set of rules. Only the things that bother me and offend my own set of morals matter and I don't care about anyone else, and so therefore neither should they."

IGNORING ALL DISCUSSION HAD SO FAR:
The probelm is when people don't want to be offended and start infringing of the freedom of speech and in turn, offend people, is when things get ugly.
I still want the right to say things that might be annoying or offensive. I don't use them for no reason though.

I have an Allergy to Stupid.
I also would like to chime in I HATE this kind of stuff. Attmeping to comprehend this kind of world nearly blows my brain apart. I shudder and start to freak out quickyl trying that. I'd probably end up like Spongebod in that Waiter episode if I tohught about it.
UGH!
-
True. There are 6 billion people, with 6 billion opinions and thoughts, so problems like this will never be solved.
-
I have an Allergy to Stupid.
I concur. I have very strict guidelines of what stupid is, and amazingly, lots of people fit into them.

Oh no, a CROSS on a MEMORIAL, it's the government forcing us all into a state religion!
Maybe the Red Cross will have to change their symbol next.Or maybe its just disrespectful for all the non-Christians who sacrificed their lives for the possibility of a better world, hm? There are PLENTY of ways to honor the fallen without having to resort to religious icons, no matter how small they may be.
I don't know about you, but 'Seperation of Church and State' MEANS Seperation of Church and State. You can't commit yourself to this principle and then do shit like this.
And don't even get me started on the Red Cross.
EDIT:
Two clear cut examples of why I do not have a right to not be offended:- White Supremacist groups being able to march in the streets of my hometown with the proper permits and what-not. I'm offended by that, yet they're still allowed to do that. As much as I dislike it when people burn the American Flag, it isn't a crime in America. People have the right to express themselves through the 1st Amendment and sometimes we have to take all the shit that comes with it. That said, I'd rather have freedom of speech.
- The new game show 'Show Me The Money' with William Shatner. It's so Shat-tastic that I want the 10 Plagues of Egypt cursed upon the offices of FOX so that the human rights violation known as 'Show Me The Money' is shut down for good.

what point would it serve if I bitched at random people I saw doing things I didn't like I don't but I don't like the behavoir and find it uncessesary
oh and Bad-Beat I believe the children defense is used because its an easy way to guilt people into doing what you want, because I don't believe that anyone will argue that hearing bad words or seeing bad things will turn them into dropout, deviants

U'v got to learn to cheer up man. Don't try to gather all the answers about life..Remember the Principle of the Simple Person. Coz if u tend to gather all questions that curiously you'll be in trouble soon. Take Adam and Eve for example…they knew too much...look what happened to them.
-
Knowing too much is never a bad thing.
-
Actually too much of everything is a bad thing. And there's a thin line of difference between a genius and an idiot.
-
Red Cross sort of does use different variants of their emblem. You know, Red Crescent and so on.
Summery of both threads:
"About how others getting offended offendes me". That's the irony of this thread.

knowledge can NEVER make someone an idiot.
"About how others getting offended offendes me". That's the irony of this thread.
not quite, the thread is asking a question. My Opinion is that people don't.
-
Actually it's pretty complicated to explain the sbject about how knowledge backfires.
Errr.. Okay…I'll give you an example...
Have you seen the movie "A Beautiful Mind" (It's History)? There were some things about that novel prize winner guy in the show that made him a wacko. I mean....he keeps seing other people even though they were not there. -
thats not because of knowledge thats because of a disease called schizophrenia, he was though a brilliant mathmatician(sp?)
I agree that not all information is good but having the MOST of it you can makes it easy to differentiate the good from the bad.
-

Precisely!! And point taken there. So yeah.
Everything's good. But nothing must be abused always. Balance is the best in everything.
-
I wasn't agreeing with you. but noone think that everything they get told is true thats just idiotic, the more knowledge you can have the better off you will be.
-
That's coz our brain has such a big capacity for storing up knowledge and info. But comeon man…You've gotta admit that knowledge sometimes creates doubt and fear.

Or maybe its just disrespectful for all the non-Christians who sacrificed their lives for the possibility of a better world, hm? There are PLENTY of ways to honor the fallen without having to resort to religious icons, no matter how small they may be.
The cross is a very universal symbol, it's not just a Christian symbol.
I don't know about you, but 'Seperation of Church and State' MEANS Seperation of Church and State. You can't commit yourself to this principle and then do shit like this.
The memorial has been there for over 50 years. This "principal" by the definition people have concocted in recent times didn't exist when it was built. The first amendment states congress shall not make any law establishing a religion or the free exercise of. The purpose of this amendment is to prevent the government from forcing the whole country to believe in one religion. Saying that some 50 year old classic statue on a memorial is forcing people into a state religion is nothing short of madness and a total wank of the intent of the first amendment.
Whoops, I got the thread off-topic, sorry.

Thank god Cosmic is here. Cosmic, you are the most logical, and level headed person on this board IMO. Your presence is needed to return sanity to this thread.
I think I'm done trying to point out my view on here. Know what Taleran. You are a very thoughtless and selfish person. If you feel the need to act in a way that only benifits you, then I want nothing to do with you. I only want to be around people who are caring and concerned with my needs.
Feel free to talk to me when you actually give a damn about me. Don't expect me to do you any favors. Enjoy your lonely bitter exsistance.
Now on to all you caring people. "how can I help you" ^_^
(I normally do not bluntly state my negative opinion of others, but if someone wants to bluntly be so uncaring..well, cause and effect)
-
And there's a thin line of difference between a genius and an idiot.
That's stupid. Gandhi, Isaac Newton, Martin Luther King, Einstein, Mother Theresa etc are geniuses. The inventor of the KKK is an idiot. Mao, as good as maths or whatever he was, was an idiot. He had to be smart to get in power.
I agree with Cosmic, sometimes people turn into idiots and bigots in the pursuit to NOT BE offended.

Do you have any idea how hypocrictical that is?
seriously you all preach about how everyone should think of others needs, it'd be impossible for that to happen, I'm glad at least some of the people here understand this.

yes it is impossible for everyone to do it, but at least you, and the people around you, know you tried.

Well I can't blame you for that. :getlost: A lot of people say those things are stupid. But it really is true, I got the fact from my mom. Luther, Einstein and Mother Theresa were geniuses, but there are a lot of geniuses who were victims of idiocy. Okay okay I'll give u an example…..And I hated Einstein and that other guy for creating the ATOMIC BOMB. If u look at him without knowing his background, you'll think he's an idiot.
Geeks....Yeah...Most guys that we call geniuses are geeks, not becoz they're that intelligent and geeky and such, but because they are gifted and very knowledgable over one field aspect. But because of that these geeks sacrifice their abilities in one field thus making them low and indiffirent over most other things in life. Geeks ARE GENIUSES over one field aspect. But they are considered as idiots on most other fields in life.
Andres Bonifacio is not an idiot. If he's an idiot then Einstein and Luther are idiots. Having a very poor background doesn't make u an idiot. And you've gotta admit that it was because of his first step that we (the Filipino's) have become independent, he has won countless battles in the rebellion against Spanish Gobernador Generals...It's such a sad story that he died in the hands of his own GREEDY COMRADE. He did know that Emilio Aguinaldo(D GREEDY COMRADE) was plotting over him. Did you see his painting "Cry of Balintawak"? It has a very deep meaning inside the pictures.:wub:
-
lot of geniuses who were victims of idiocy
Hitler was pretty damn smart. Pity he was insane. He's an idiot.
Most guys that we call geniuses are geeks
That is wrong. The End. Most geniuses don't fit in the stereotype.

Eh? What?
I have different defintions of idiot and people who go around yelling in peoples faces to shut up otherwise someone will get offended is stupid.
-
Hitler was pretty damn smart. Pity he was insane. He's an idiot.
Hitler was a genius…aside from that he's an idiot.
Eh? What?
Andres Bonifacio (one of our Filipino heroes). . The guy who created KKK!! (KKK means Kataas-taasan, Kagalang-galangan ng mga anak ng Katipunan!) In English it means the "The Highest and most honorable sons of the Katipunan."
Okay…I'm guessing there was a misunderstanding about KKK in both of us. :getlost:
-
I am strongly of the belief that the more we try not to offend people, the more people we will, in turn, end up offending.
I don't know about you, but 'Seperation of Church and State' MEANS Seperation of Church and State.
Except that "Seperation of Church and State" was nothing more than a phrase made in a letter by one of our 'Founding Fathers,' simple stating that the government has no right to control the church, and vice versa, NOT to keep religious symbols/actions that individuals choose to use/perform on government property. Heck, the whole thing isn't even a law.
-

Heck, the whole thing isn't even a law.
You're right.
It all comes down to, in the end, offending people. Which makes it quite appropriate that it comes up in this thread.
Perhaps THE easiest way to offend people is with religion. This is… well, I can't call it fact, but it does seem pretty obvious.
Like it or not, shoving a cross (which is, like it or not, prodominantly a religious symbol) on top of a war monument will offend religious people of other religions. And the only reason it's there is because the people who made it are Christian, and they're giving respect to the dead... in a fundamentally RELIGOUS way.
You can say it's no big deal. And maybe it's not, to you. But it is to others. Even if they're a minority, isn't considering their feelings important too? It's not hard to make a monument without the cross and still have it commemorate the dead, or, since it's already made, alter it.
And, just so you know, I'm just using that one as an example. There's plenty more prominent ones out there, I'm sure. The goverment-owned commandments monument, the use of the phrase "under God" in the pledge of allegiance... and many more than that, I'm sure.
It's offensive to those who don't share your religion. And you need to realize that.
Of course, the same would apply the other way around. If the Jewish put their star of David on a government-made war memorial, for example, I would say the same thing. It's not about bashing one religion, it's about keeping these kinds of places and these kinds of things religion-free. To not offend people.
It might not be as outright offensive as some of things we've seen earlier in this thread cough cough but it still offensive. And the feelings of others need to be considered.
Anyway, I'd like to end this little rant by saying it was aimed at no particular member. I just needed to get that out there. (And Myoti's post was a good starting point. Sorry, Myoti.)
-
That's fine, the reason why I brought up that in the first place is to get people to agree that people have the right to be offended. I just find it hypocritical that a lot of the time the same people who think that people don't have the right to be offended by things like profanity, nudity, etc.. are generally really offended by religious symbolism. Personally I feel offended by people trying to shove certain secular beliefs down my throat, and I feel somewhat offended by a lot of PC nonsense, but that stuff pretty much rules everything these days. Basically it depends on the culture and the way the pendulum is swinging in society that decides what you're allowed to be offended by and what you're not allowed to be offended by. It's really all very meaningless. But people will always be offended by something, just hope that what you're offended by happens to be something that the majority of culture agrees is offensive.
-
Bless you CosmicDebris, I love when people actually make sense. What would AP do without you?

I like the post except for that majority doesn't = correct.
Its amazing how much people can look at you here based around one belief since someof you now believe me to be a crazy person, I'm actually quite nice
Remember people shouldn't have the right to be offended, this culture and the one all around the world however have evolved in a way that about certain things (racism, etc) are taboo, I believe the words are okay, but I don't say them in a group of people who'll take offense because I'll probably get my ass kicked and because they aren't part of my regular vocabluary, words like fuck and shit however I do use alot so I don't try to modulate my speech or hide it with other words to sound nicer since that would be fake.
I also believe heavily in the US constitution (I like it better than the Canadian one), and will continue to live with the belief that we should be allowed to say whatever we want whenever we want, because where does it leave us when people aren't allowed to express themselves in a way that they feel is correct? I don't know the answer but if that'd ever happen I doubt I want to live there.
-
Don't worry about it Paulie, though I believe Cosmic spoke what needed to be said on that.
I like the post except for that majority doesn't = correct.
Very true. But at the same time, it is the deciding factor in what is deemed "offensive."
If I go to another country where they say that showing your the sole of your foot is offensive, do I, being an American, have the right to purposely put my foot up in front of them because I don't believe it's offensive?
Now if it's something that's truely out there, such as, say, some sort of 'culture' where they're highly discriminate against certain people or such, then offending that can't might not be such a problem, save the possible beating you might get from doing such (though I've been put in these situations and by the grace of God walked out unscathed XD; ).
-
I like the post except for that majority doesn't = correct.
That was actually one of the points I was trying to make. But fact is, the majority rules. That's why I said you had best hope to be on the side that the majority backs up. Sometimes what's right will be believed by the majority. Sometimes it's the minority. And people will always argue about whether something is really right or wrong, or whether such as thing as right and wrong exists. Some things are just nothing more than politeness and knowing how to treat your neighbor. I think it is always right to consider another person's feelings before you act. You might feel it is perfectly in your right to do or say something in front of another person, but take into account that it would simply be better if you didn't, for their sake.
Its amazing how much people can look at you here based around one belief since someof you now believe me to be a crazy person, I'm actually quite nice
Everyone's a jerk on the internet. Especially me.
I don't think you're crazy, I just think you're egotistical.
It doesn't mean you're not a nice person on the surface.Remember people shouldn't have the right to be offended
No, that's a terrible thing to say. Of course people have the right to be offended. People can't HELP being offended at some things, and to take away that right would be like saying people don't have the right to find things funny or stupid.
Bless you CosmicDebris, I love when people actually make sense. What would AP do without you?
Probably keep posting the same as always?
Why is everyone complimenting me lately…? -
Racism offends people
don't be racistcriticism on something MAY offend people
but may NOT offend
if you had no intent on offending others then okay
but if you did that YOU'RE A DICK

the things u state in this forum always make sense and somehow getting both sides to agree on...

but yeah back on topic
everybody has a right to personal opinon, and they have a right to reject and feel persoanlly attacked by said opinon -
In a response to the title of this thread:
People DO have the right to be offended but you must know what it is, how far you can go etc. Some people should be shot or have their lips stapled together as well.
If a dude's grave has a cross on it: Stop bitching and respect the dead guy's religion.
If a 5-year old kid drew a stereotypical picture of race X: Stop bitching, sort out anything with the parents and teach the child at a good time with reasonable methods.
If a guy ran into the street and yelled "F*** RACE X!" then: Shoot the guy. Or at least hit him with a crowbar.
If a group of cranky soccer moms and such started petitioning to demolish a 500 year old structure with a religious symbol on it then:Shoot them. Or at least brutalise them.

Actually I agree Pants-eater a lot, violence is the way to solve almost anything since talking things out hardly help the solution, especially if the topic one of these subjects, but really shooting people isn't the answers. We are not pathetic war machines, or rednecks.

Ya, that was totally me. It's all my master plan, to manipulte the people on this board in an atempt to take over AP forums. >:)
green ranger: did you read what you wrote? XD
anyways, back to the whole religios symbol thing. My feelings on it are this. Different religions are kind of like different languages to me. I don't get offended if someone is writing in Russain. That's how they grew up. That's what they know.
A cross on a monument is ok, because it is just the creators way of honoring someone. It's not trying to forse religion on anyone. If someone made a monument with the star of david on it, that would be fine with me.
Now, i'm catholic. If someone told me "no you can't have a cross, because that offends me as a jew, you must have a star of david or I'll be mad" then, I would be offended.
eh, just my feelings on it.
-
Of course people have the right to not be offended; if someone says something to me and it doesn't offend me, then that's that.
