Just as the topic specifies, do you think that a DF user could go into the sea and swim and possibly be immune to the effects of Kairoseki if they wore something as simple as a thin rubber or plastic suit? Or hell, maybe if they covered their body in plastic wrap? I wonder about this because the SHs may have to travel underwater at some point in their trek to Merman Island and Luffy, Robin, and Chopper may be in danger of having to swim. Or perhaps even fight underwater.
Could a DF user swim if they wore a rubber suit?
-
-
The only metal strong enough to make such a suit out of is diamond (the strongest known the man)
-
Personally, I think the entrance to Gyojin Island is something like a hollowed out Crab or Turtle (Think seaking size), in which the ship sails into it, then the seaking descends to the city, which is domed.
You know, similar to Skypeia's lobster carrier.
-
Was the part where Luffy goes in the scuba gear filler on Toei's part? If not they could just wear scuba suits. Sure they'd be basically defenseless but it'll work.
Fire Fist's Ace idea sounds cool. There probably is somewhere where there is air, or basically when they fight there they'll be in a total disadvantage. -
Hell… i can't belive this topic exists... it's too ridiculous.
-
Helter Skelter, that Usopp av is too awesome.
-
If a DF user were wearing an air-tight suit that covers all their body, I suppose they would be able to swim.
-
They're dead weights so anything they wore would sink along with them. If they had an oxygen tank, they could breathe but they would stay down there until someone pulled them up.

Why would they sink if they aren't toching the water?

no it wasnt filler, so yes a DF user could use a scuba suit type outfit http://groups.msn.com/OnePieceMangav-3/volume24.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=4553
luffys is a full suit so he not really touching water -
**> Why would they sink if they aren't toching the water?
They would still sink, because the clothes means extra weight, like a 700 gram pair of shorts.
If they're submerged in water and had a rubber suit on, the rubber suit would just be extra weight.**
-
Thanks AceofBlades.
Will they have to wear that for Fishman island? Even if there is some place under there has air, its gotta be pretty tough for them most likely. If they ever get into the ocean, they're dead.

np
im for fire fist ace's idea of the dome, or maybe some kind of big underwater cave
but the thing is why would fishmen/mermen want/need/make an underwater dome? they can breath underwater just fine. why go through the trouble for some humans? -

So? The water isn't touching them so they would feel perfectly normal and would be able to swim.

A DF user would be able to swim unless he's Luffy.
Because Luffy can't swim even without a devil fruit.
-

So that means, if Luffy was in a Gundam and was piloting it underwater, he would be ok? I didn't know that.**
-
Remember,
Swim =/= float16 characters
-
So, they wouldn't be buoyant enough to float, but they wouldn't lose any strength?
-
As long as they aren't touching seawater they should have no problem.
-
Yes it's true that if they arn't touching the water they still would be able to swim, but, remember that it doesn't only count if they touch the materia, even if they are close to it without touching it they feel weak/their powers are drawn. So if they are to distance themself enough from the water they should be ok, but however Ruffy was in a rubbber suit and was ok in the Jaya arc, which I think was a flaw. But anyway, swiming wouldnt't count for Ruffy anyway since he wasn't able to swim even in the first place, and he probably hasn't had alot of swim practise since he got the devil fruit powers. So it could be possible for other devil fruit users.
Sorry for any gramatical or spelling mistakes if they are present, I'm not sober while typing this so… you know
Monkey D. Ruffy

Wrong. A good portion of their body has to be soaked for them to feel weak.
-
Didn't Ruffy feel weak in the Kairoseki(sp?) cage that Crocodile had in that casino even when he wasn't touching it? And it's said that Kairoseki has the same effect as seawater? Are you sure you arn't thinking of drinking/sugar(?) water?
Or why would even a tiny piece of Kairoseki (like the end of Smokers stick) weaken Ruffy?Monkey D. Ruffy

Monkey D. Ruffy
SUGAR????? Ok lets not go there. Luffy must be in water that is at least half a metre high(just a guess could be more) being near or getting splashed by water does not affect him. Im sure he only lost his powers when he was touching the cage( I'm not gonna guarantee it because it's been a long time since i read that bit)

**Luffy felt pretty fine until he actually touched the bars. You aren't going to be actually weakned by seastone unless you touch it.
And Luffy started feeling weak when the water went over hig knees.**

he felt weak at first because he was grabbing the bars of the cage, and then smoker hit him with his jutte which has the kairouseki tip but when he was just hanging around in the cage he was perfectly fine (sanji impression ftw)
edit: gah i took to long to post :S

Luffy is himself a rubber suit, so I don't think so.
-
Isn't it the energy the sea radiates and not the actual water itself?
-
well luffy went into the water with his scuba suit
http://groups.msn.com/OnePieceMangav…o&PhotoID=4553
so thats all the proof u need -
Oh yeah…I forgot about that. I withdraw my last statement.
-
So what happens to a Fish Fish DF user? Will he able to swim or not? :)) It would be funny if he can turn into fish but can not swim. It's kind of like a penguin which is a bird but cannot fly. But this one is lamer and stupider.
-

f he was in a rubber suit (or any protective suit, as seen in Aceofblade's post) he'd be fine. a gundam is overkill, but i don't see why he can't pilot one underwater.
-
Luffy has already gone underwater in the Bellamy arc (i don't remember the official name), when they got Nami`s waver…
It was a diving suit.
But who know what ODA will pull out from a underwater island?

DIdn't Luffy or Shanks say that he was a good swimmer before he ate the devil's fruit? >_>
Mr. 3!!! !!!! !!!!! !!!
He was in his wax bubble thing…
-
Shanks didn't eat a devil fruit, at least before Luffy's flashback, because he saved both Buggy and Luffy from the ocean. Luffy couldn't swim, ever. His shirt as a kid even said "Anchor" and that's why Krieg called him "Anchor", because he knew that DF people would sink.
I believe Smoker said that he used to be a good swimmer after Zoro rescued him from Rain Dinners.
-
Anyone got a better scan of this scene: http://groups.msn.com/OnePieceMangav-3/volume24.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=4554
??
I can't see the sea monsters too well.
Luffy is himself a rubber suit, so I don't think so.
This is the 3rd time I've seen you comment on something, and the third time I've been appalled by your lack of common sense. =//////////
-
I always thought it was direct contact only….........
-

> I meant Shanks saying that Luffy was a good swimmer, and he would have to give it up… And I thought he saved Luffy after Luffy ate it... >>;
I don't see how "Anchor" = Hammer in the ocean... >_>;
And I don't remember Smoker saying that, unless it was cut out in the anime... XD
-
No, you're thinking of when Shanks saw Luffy and said, "What's wrong, I thought your punch was as strong as a pistol" and Luffy snapped, "Shut up!" Luffy couldn't swim BEFORE he ate the Devil Fruit.
And a hammer is a term for an anchor, because an anchor sinks to the bottom of the Ocean. A hammer is also a term for someone that can't swim.
-
And for a more direct answer to his question.
In the anime, they stated that Luffy is a good swimmer
In the manga, they stated that Luffy sucks at swimming.
-

They shouldn't do that it ruins the story. I can understand them not showing how he got his scar(due to people possibly copying it) but at least its there.
-
Didnt Luffy's neck stretch during the arlong arc?
Luffy doesnt swim during the Jaya arc
-
Speaking of the protective suits incident. How didn't Sanji suffocate? He was smoking while in that thing…
-
It was a Cigarette of Love.
-
This may be a restatement, but I sill don't think everyone is understanding it. Luffy has to be submerged about 50% in water to become a hammer, simple contact with water won't do it. As shown in the picture before, Luffy's feet are infact in contact with the water, while completley submerged. So, as long as Luffy or any DF user wears something that protects over 50% of their body from the water, they should be fine to swim or do whatever.
-
I remember it was mentioned in a SBS once… Talking about baths and how DF users bathe. O.o
-
I remember it was mentioned in a SBS once… Talking about baths and how DF users bathe. O.o
They bathe in the showers or have a bath with less water
-
So the general consensus is that a Devil's Frut user would not be affected by the sea if he or she were to wear a waterproof suit (even one as thin as a simple rubber suit), and could most likely swim if they knew how to.
-
I had the Therory that if someone ate a Devil Fruit that allowed them to turn to any type of stone or Mineral, One could turn the Pumice and float. But When I remembered that Sea water cancelled out the abilty itself that idea was shot to hell. I might be wrong though.
-
no no the water cancels out CONTROL of the ability. e.g. luffy loses the ability to control his stretch, but someone can still stretch him under the sea. chopper loses the ability to control his transformations and retain his monster point, but doesn't immediatley shoot back into his pre-df reindeer form.
so far, seawater has been the only one shown to weaken the person(e.g. basic physical movements) when in significant contact.
plain water has been only said to just make the person lose control over his/her devil fruit powers.
they haven't shown any water making the person weak yet, and yea, kalifa was bathing and she didn't get paralysed at all, so that's my hypothesis.
btw u apparently have to be in direct contact with the sea/seastone to actually lose physical strength. smoker wears a jacket and the seastone doesn't affect him, if u noticed.
as for plain water, we haven't seen any guy wearing any protective gear and using their DF powers, so we don't know if their DF powers apply if water is in indirect/covered contact with them
so in seawater, when wearing the suit(without bodily contact), all we know for sure is that they can swim and perform normal human physical functions. we don't know if they still retain their df power control.
